Lord of the Rings Online Goes Beta

Turbine and Midway announce that The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has entered the beta testing phase as the Tolkien MMORPG nears completion:
WESTWOOD, MA – SEPTEMBER 8, 2006 – Turbine and Midway announced today that The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™ (LOTRO) has officially entered Beta in North America. Codemasters Online Gaming is pleased to announce the simultaneous launch of Pre-Beta in Europe.

This Beta is by invitation only and over time more and more players will be invited. Fans can continue to register to join the Beta Program by visiting http://www.lotro.com/betasignup for North America and http://www.lotro-europe.com for the European program.

“The response to LOTRO Alpha was overwhelming. Player enthusiasm continues to exceed our expectations at every milestone,” said Jeffrey Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine, Inc. “The Alpha was oversubscribed and the Beta Program is on a record-setting pace with nearly 200,000 players already registered. LOTRO is building toward one of the largest beta communities in the industry.”

The first and only massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings Online™ allows players to write their own stories in Middle-earth™, the most famous fantasy world of all time.

David Solari, Vice President and General Manager of Codemasters Online Gaming, said “It’s great to reach the Beta for such an exciting game. We look forward to seeing players bring the incredible world of Middle-earth to life and making it their own.”

I miss killing leets in Anarchy online, they were just soo cute and cuddly and sorta looked like mutant hamsters with no arms and bambi eye, but damn could they be mean.

Graphics are always subjective. Not to mention depending heavily on your system specs. Two people with the same tastes playing on two different systems one high-end the other low-end... of course the low-end guy is going to be less impressed.

My friend always has a high-end system not bleeding edge but high enough to run most games with all the options turned up. It makes a huge difference.

I've seen a few videos and this game looks good graphically but I am still in the "game-play is king" camp. I also hope they have an over-load of content like WoW. Both solo and group stuff... if not I won't bother.

My friend is in the Alpha (now Beta) and he claims the graphics are better than any other on-line game he has played which is quite a long list

That's personal preference, I guess.

I think the graphics suck. (Style-wise)
Same AC 2 / DDO '90's crappy poly trees.
Same AC 2 / DDO American-bastardized-Anime-ish character models.
Same AC 2 / DDO Dull Building Models / Wall textures.

That said... the graphics are sufficient. I'm more into gameplay than graphics... and between AC 2 and DDO... I can't say that there is much hope for LOTRO.

Um you were forced to kill 12000 mobs to complete a quest, or was this for some sort of mount/purple armor thing?

You've never had to grind in WoW, if you choose to that's another matter. from level 1-60 can be done easily just by doing your own quests solo (with the exception of a few that either you need help to do like Hogger (think that's his name in Elwyn Forrest), or are marked Elite/Instanced aka Wailing Caverns.

No grinding in WoW....yeah right

Never had to kill 12000 Mobs of one faction to gain the faction to go to an area where you must kill 30000 Mobs of a faction to be able to go into another area ? If you've never been made to kill more than lets say 1000 mobs of one kind or in one special area for a quest or faction, i think you are not playing wow.

Btw:
Saw LOTRO at the GC 2006 and it was looking really nice, but many hardcore Tolkien Fans were unhappy with the game, as it is inaccurate (doh!).

One difference from other mmogs, there'll be lots of "serious" roleplayers on the LotRO RP servers. Tolkien purests are trekkie-like in their knowledge of every single detail of middle earth.
Frodo says 'Hail Traveller, I need some jumjum juice. Return to me when you have collected 10 jumjum seeds from the snakes outside our walls'
bwahaha i remember that from EQ1, the halfling in Rivervale right? which was the EQ version of Hobbits, so LotRO should include it just as an inside joke.

Damn i miss EQ1. and AC1. and UO.

"Well with the exception of Asheron's Call on my list, each of those MMO's were graphically superior at the time of launch, with exception to WoW, which is cartoony but art direction wise plays perfectly to the Warcraft Series and can hold a good amount of poly's/effects on screen at any given time."

My friend is in the Alpha (now Beta) and he claims the graphics are better than any other on-line game he has played which is quite a long list. I'm hoping to get in on a little beta myself. I won't buy without trying it first. And after beta testing AC & WoW and few others not worth mentioning I know exactly what will and won't keep my attention for more than a few weeks or months.

Until WoW, AC and DAoC were the longest played MMORPGs for me. I think I lasted about 3 months in AC. And maybe 4 in DAoC. But I played WoW 3 or 4 months in beta before putting in another 4 to 6 months retail taking a break and hitting it again for a few months.

The problem I have with the MMORPGs is when you get hooked hard like a crack-head and your spending every possible moment in the game you eventually realize real-life is passing you buy.

So you break the habit go cold turkey or whatever and then it's like any other addiction you try your best to avoid it...

I left WoW and took a step down to EQ2. I went cold turkey about two (maybe three) months later. And lately I have been Jones-ing to get into the LoTR Online Beta... so bad I almost logged back into EQ2. I no-longer have any interest in WoW. Though I will admit it is the best of the best.

True creston, but you have to admit, even with WoW's limited history compaired to LOTR/Hobbit, it only works if you stick to it and build on it and use it for a bible if you will.

Surprisingly WoW has so much lore/history it's kinda scarey how well the Blizzard fanbase knows it.

And hopefully with CBS now owning Star Trek we'll finally see more good games, as Legacy is looking very nice, and Online.. well it looks good so far, but looks aren't everything. (glares at EQ2).

it could challenge WoW, simply because of the lore behind it. The only other MMORPGS that I can think of with such a rabid fan base are Star Trek Online and Star Wars, before Sony shat out that pathetic turd called Galaxies.

That said, it will need to be VERY good to do so.

Edit : Frodo says 'Hail Traveller, I need some jumjum juice. Return to me when you have collected 10 jumjum seeds from the snakes outside our walls'

QUEST RECEIVED: Return to Frodo with 10 jumjum seeds

Okay, let's move on, no threat here.

WoW's gameplay rocks. I never feel like I'm grinding in this game. Someone is going to have to put out one friggin' incredible MMO to ever put a dent in WoW. I'm quite sure LOTRO isnt't the one. I had hopes for Conan, but it's no looking all that great to me either.

As for people wondering if WoW is affecting the sales of other games, this is definately true for me. There are probably at least 6 games in the past 6 months I would normally have purchased if I wasn't playing WoW.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

Anyone else notice that with MMO companies, the first one they make is typically really good and others that they make just suck?

Well... technically Funcom and Blizzard haven't made a second MMO yet. Neither has EA for Ultima.

But I get what you mean... that's because these game companies are way more concerned about graphics than gameplay... and it shows with all the shitty MMO's we've gotten in the last few years. (Not including the ones that were successful)

Don't get me wrong... graphics are still a major factor... but they are sacrificing features, content, and gameplay for "graphics sake". Then wonder why their game flops.
