BF2142 Beta Opens

EA announces that beta testing of Battlefield 2142 will open up to another 10,000 testers tomorrow, with a paid subscription no longer required to test DICE's coming shooter sequel, though a free registration is:
The Battlefield 2142 public beta period has been extended until Tuesday, September 12. In addition, due to the overwhelming response to the beta, DICE and EA have opened 10,000 new slots to the public.

The 10,000 new slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting Friday, September 8th at 10am PST. A free GameSpy ID is required to participate.

A new version of the tuning beta is also available now, which already includes more than 1,000 changes to the game based on feedback from the beta to date. Current players will need to download the new client, but no new access key is required.

The beta has been a huge success over the past two weeks, with more than 65,000 gamers participating, helping DICE secure a clean launch for the game on October 17th.

It'll probably take at least 15 minutes for all of those keys to get snatched up, right? If I don't forget about it I think I might attempt to get one tomorrow at 1pm EST -- wouldn't mind checking it out for myself...for free.

I'm honestly surprised by how BF2142 is thus far. I was expecting a very tame-in-comparison BF:V to BF1942 kind of thing here, but they actually put some decent work into making BF2142 a highly enjoyable sequel. The engine still screams BF2 other than a few very pretty graphical updates, but the updated gameplay, new unlock system, and the Titan gameplay mode are all a blast to play.

I'm, honestly, enjoying the very-playable (though obviously buggy) beta more than I did the BF2 demo when it came out.

I don't get it, I thought an open beta was where anyone could participate. This is just a slightly less closed beta than before.

This is open because it's really first-come first-serve, ie, anyone could get in. As opposed to them hand-selecting a few (thousand) testers.

I think maybe the reason there's no link is because it doesn't happen until tommorow anyway.

I'd love to get in on it though if someone does come up with a link later on.

I love when people try to pass off advice on to others without any actual first-hand experience with the games they're putting down.

On another note, with an anticipated "launch" date of October 17th for the full game -- just a little over a month away -- they must not be too far away from releasing the BF2142 demo. Seems like the BF2 demo was released ~2 weeks before the full game if I remember correctly.

Shhh we don't speak of the BF2 demo here or the fiasco that Gamespot had trying to host it.

You are right, that must have been my imagination about the whole dynamic in game advertising announced some weeks back by ea.

Mittens, stop shilling for EA.

I'm in the 2142 Beta. It does indeed blow mightily. I like BF2 better then 2142. It may become playable at some point, but right now it's suffering from trying to add too much to an old engine.

Damn, why does Blue's get so many of these crappy paid PR people?

This game rules so hard even in beta that I am eagerly anticipating my check from EA for this statement.

I'm confused as to the general consensus on this one as one person says it sucks the other person says it's the holey grail.

I'm going to have to try this n decide for myself. I enjoyed BF2, the only downside to it was all the laggy caching crap that went on for a 1gig system. CBA upgrading to 2gig just for sloppy programming.

Ah well.

Mittens, stop shilling for EA.

I think "shill" is one of the most overused concepts since the time when Penny-Arcade "uncovered" the whole thing through some comics/e-mails.

I liked Battlefield 2 and I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the beta for BF2142. So, yeah, woo. Look at me bleed and die for EA. I'd totally do anything to support all of their products! I love EA so much! I wish I could perform acts of sexual varieties on them or, if not, at least go from site to site and proclaim their goodness as a publisher!

Oh, wait, no. That was somebody else. God forbid I enjoy the Battlefield franchise despite their problems.
