EA's motto when it comes to generating revenue.

When you think EA has run out of bad ideas, they just bounce back and surprise you, yet again.

When they say "Dynamic" does this mean they are pumped real time to the servers while were playing the game? If so how much overhead in bandwidth will the clients use? I only have a 386 upload speed I cant afford using my bandwidth to generate stupid adds.

^^ Yeah, it's called unnecessary greed. In order to make more money, how about EA actually start spending some time and effort making their games.

It means that the menu will be even slower, and that the game will have even more ad-related bugs.

I think at least part of their plan with 2142 is to see just how far they can cram things up gamers' asses before the majority of us just give up on them in disgust (hardened Maddenites and devout Fieldmonkeys seem to be perpetually gagging for it and are well beyond repair by now)..

I've been done with these fuckers for a long time now.

I have no problem with in game advertising in fact I think its a great idea. I do however have a problem adding it to a multiplayer online game that takes place in the future.

Here's how it's going to be "contextually relevant" while still being set in 2142: there will be old bombed-out cities let from the 21st century that miraculously have all of their ads left intact. Because you know, we can't have the poor advertisers' hard work defaced in any way. Which also makes me wonder if the ads will be immune to damage/decals/etc so they are always visible.

BF2142 is going to suck anyway if the history of the BF series is any indicator.

The groundwork for this had been laid a while back. Just look at banner ads on websites. And, it's not suprising that EA was the company to spearhead this for gaming. Just look at their static ads in games like Burnout 3 Takedown, the Fight Night series, etc. The only difference between that style of in-game ad and the new version is that the ads/billboards will be able to change over time to relflect/advertise new games.

As long as they don't start having popup ads that block your view while playing the game (lol), it should not be "that" different than now. Perhaps the ads will eventually recognize what game you are playing and focus on that game type for the ads. At least I wouldn't have to see all those Tiger Woods Golf ads (a game which I could care less about) when I go back and play something like Burnout 3/etc. :}

Agreed, I dont want to pay 60 bones for a game that is gonna download ads whilst i play. Ive got other things i would rather do with my bandwith. Like keep my ping down while i play games.

I remember when Anarchy Online did the ads, it was a nice way to generate revenue for the company, but the only people who had to see them were the people doing the 12 month free account. Some of the "billboards" were .avis and every time you would walk near them the game would start studdering.

Ads are fine if they're sensible - as realistic streetside billboards, around football grounds, etc - but invariably when put in the right context (which already isn't very bloody likely) they have an unrealistic level of clarity compared to reality. If they're going to have billboards, at least do it properly and have giant boabys' drawn on them in think black pen.

It could very well behave like that, depending on how they do it. Ever go to a busy webpage, get stuck waiting for it to display, and then use adblock only to find the slowdown was the damn ad server? That pisses me off.

Maybe they can offer a free version of BF2142 complete with takeover ads.. imagine the number of broken mice from frustrated players.

well said. I strongly oppose in game ads, I was forced to code this bullshit when I worked at lionhead. My games have no ads, they never will, people play games to esacpe from the advertising obsessed bullshit of real life.

Seriously though, I know "next gen" games cost a lot to make, but if they're adding advertising and I'm still paying $70(Canadian) for a game, the consumer really isn't coming out on top here so why announce this shit at all? Like we're all suppose to go "In game advertising, f@#$%ing COOL! Just want I wanted, now I have to pick up an EA game!"
