3DR/DNF Rumors Follow-up

A comment by George Broussard on the Shacknews Forums (thanks Frans and FiringSquad) follows up on yesterday's rumors of departures from 3D Realms that may impact the development of Duke Nukem Forever (story). George offers a snide remark about the site's investigative journalism, and the portion excepted below, which addresses how close the game is to completion, while not actually denying the reported defections have occurred:
Physics and animation systems are virtually finished and shippable. It's simply maintenance and polish from here on out. We haven't needed to make substantial changes to those systems in months. The changes we have made, were made without great effort. Things are never as bleak as they appear, as is often the case when you simply have one side of the story.

I love dirt like this first thing in the morning. George compared Shacknews to BitchX in his snarky post. As I recall BitchX was pretty damn accurate on the things they reported.

Dont forget fatbabies either. I truly miss that site even though most of the forum whining was limited to low tier brit developer employees. The EA.com fiasco around the time of Majestic saw some people come out of the woodwork and started naming names.

...They should hire The Romero. He can at least get a product out the door.

And then they can hire Derek Smart for all of his wonderful customer service skills.

One thing I've always wondered: did the original Duke3d really make so much money for 3DRealms that they haven't needed to make DNF?

They milked the Duke3D license way beyond the PC... console games, hand helds, etc.

Then as hapi said... Max Payne 1 & 2, Duke side scroller, Now Prey also put money in their kitty.

So, they really haven't been hurting for cash... but probably was getting to the point of needing Prey.

banddirector: "you'd think they'd get tired of working on DNF and push it out the door"

Or just quit... hence the first story of about 10 of the major developers at 3DR in leaving in the last year.

I wasn't even thinking about Max Payne; I can see how much they must've made. But you'd think they'd get tired of working on DNF and push it out the door ...

Probably, yes. About 24 employees. Assume an aggregate load of about $130k/employee/year is around $3mil/year. 10 years since Duke Nukem 3D means they need $30 million total. Count self published Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad, and producer for Max Payne and now Prey. Say on average they grossed $10/unit means they'd need to have sold in total low millions of units, which sounds entirely plausible across those four titles.

I would go as far as saying no EA game recieves anything that could be even remotely classed as 'maintenance' and 'polish'...

I miss BitchX. There hasn't been anyone who could get to the bottom of a story while simultaneously finding 3 others.

If this thing is sooo f'in close to being finished then why no screenies, vids etc.? I call shananigans!

Because it's not. It's pretty obvious that Remo was simply reporting what those recently departed devs had told him, and they were telling him that the game is in trouble.

George and Scott seem to have a good grasp of marketing/producing games but IMO they should probably think about ending the developer thing.
