Penny Arcade Game

Hothead Games and Penny Arcade announce plans for a cross-platform episodic game based on the popular comic strip that paradoxically can occasionally be a trifle unkind to game developers. Word is:
Penny Arcade and Hothead Games Join Forces to Create Video Games Based on the Penny Arcade Characters and Universe

Bellevue, Washington (August 25, 2006) — The creators of online ultracomic Penny Arcade have joined forces with Hothead Games, an independent and experienced video game developer, to collaboratively create video games based on the Penny Arcade comic.

“We’re really excited to be working with Hothead Games on our first electronic adventure," said writer Jerry Holkins, his clawed feet resting atop a huge slab of granite. "From the moment we laid eyes on them, it was clear they had the technical and creative chops to execute our grim vision. Now that we have pooled our strengths, our dark work may truly begin." Holkins then paused to eat a rat whole.

The first game, entitled Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, will be a comic adventure game initially available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, followed by a version for next-generation consoles. The game will be available by digital download, delivered in episodic format with new installments of the adventure coming out several times a year.

Vlad Ceraldi, President of Hothead Games, says this new venture feels very comfortable for the team Hothead has assembled for the project: “All our developers are industry veterans with years of experience translating characters from other media into video games, having been involved with such hits as The Simpsons Hit & Run and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. So working with Penny Arcade to create their first game is a natural fit, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with them.” Ceraldi added, “I’ve promised this with past games, and I stand by it: if the game sucks, I’ll eat my shirt.”

A release date for the first episode of Penny Arcade Adventures is to be announced.

I still like PA although I'm not quite as enamored with them as I used to be. They used to play a lot of the games that I did, but now they do a lot more comics based on console stuff and since I'm still mostly a PC Gamer, I often don't get the references they make in their comics. The recent series of Armadeadon comics were quite amusing though and I really like some of the characters they have created. Chuck/Charles, The infamous Fruit Fucker, and my favorite, Div. That guy just brings it

I do have to agree with the earlier post that Tycho often tries to hard to sound smart when he is writing. I'm a college graduate with above average intelligence and an above average vocabulary, but he often annoys the piss out of me with his "look at how smart I am! I can use big words!" style of writing.

As far as the game goes, I'm going to take a wait and see attitude.

One last thing. Personal attacks about the physical appearance of the PA guys are really lame and have nothing to do with the quality of the comic.

Their comics can sometimes not make sense at first blush, but if you read the news that accompanies them it helps.

PA made an asshat out of Jack Thompson, especially scince PA donated money that Thompson was suppose to donate to a charity if anyone made his game.

Agree or disagree I could care less, but fer fuck sake you all are bitching and moaning about something this trivial is just insane.

Really? It made the top 10 in sales for a week in April:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6148856.html

Clarification: A week is not a month. Perhaps I should have been more specific and stated that the game needed to be in the top 10 sales for the entire month.

In any case, the game barely made 10th place in sales for that one week and I doubt that really had anything to do with the 11% of GalCiv2 official site visitors who heard about it from PA.

It makes sense because both Oprah and PA are hugely successful in their relative domains. They're successful because they appeal to the largely stupid and unwashed masses. The same masses who have a knee slapping laugh at every Family Guy gag, the same knuckle dragging masses who propelled Friends to the top of the Neilson ratings.

But hey you have nothing to worry about. The PA army is a fearsome juggernauht consisting of both rail thin 90lb men and 300lb obese disafected losers who put in over 80 hours/week in WoW. You can all take solace in knowing you'll never have to deal with icky girls.

I like PA, wasn't gonna respond to this thread until I read this. Now, I don't mind being called a part of the unwashed masses, but as for the rest, that annoyed me.

First off, I hate family guy with a passion. Can't stand the show, it has no humor what so ever. I've seen a few episodes on and off, and it's nothing but a bunch of stupid, unrelated skits connected by an idiotic story, if you want to call it a story. As for friends, I never could understand why anyone would want to watch a show about a bunch of half brain dead yuppyish friends. I never much cared for seinfeld either.
Anyways, call me unwashed all you want, but do not say I like family guy or friends. Now that's an insult.

I like PA, I think it captures the gaming zeitgeist better than any other comic.

The game is probably a terribe idea, but at least they can milk it for some future comic if it tanks.

And if you're gonna hate a comic strip, pick one that's more deserving, like Family Circus or Garfield ;).

Wow, we're talking about the PA guys alter egos and you list off comic book characters as examples.

Yeah, because that would just be totally farcical when these guys are known primarily for writing/drawing a comic strip.

Yes, it's called an "alter ego." It's supposed to be a facade.

Most alter egos are somewhat similar, in a physical sense, to their alternate identities - see Superman & Clark Kent, Spiderman & Peter Parker, Wonder Woman & Diana Prince etc for examples.

How about 11% of those polled saying they heard of GalCiv2 from PA?
http://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=161&aid=113374
http://www.stardock.com/temp/fun.ht3.gif

Those numbers only account for the visitors to the GalCiv2 official site and not actual sales figures. GalCiv2 is a niche title. It is unsurprising that a number of people heard about it from Penny-Arcade. Unfortunately, this does not support the other poster's statement that PA has a great influence on a game's success. It doesn't. Look at the top 10 charts for any given month. Do you really think the millions of people who buy Sims games read PA?

As for the actual PA games, who knows. They haven't released enough information to make any initial impressions. I'm guessing the games will be adventure games, since that is the best genre for comedy.

It's just entertainment. If you find yourself looking down on others because of such petty differences in preference for such you might want to reevaluate your perspective somewhat.

I really don't care what they do or what they're interested in. That was directed at the PA fanbois who come in here with their elitist mob mentality of if you don't like PA it's probably because you're not smart enough to apprciate it's humor

Please.

Not at all sure how the typical PA style translates to a game though. Their comics are always just right in the middle of something. It's never a start-complication-end thing, but just three panels taken, basically, at a moment's notice.

Translating that into a game would be very, very difficult.

So we'll see.

Jerry and Mike have explained numerous times in interviews and in their first book that the Gabe and Tycho characters were never originally meant to be them (they didn't even have names at first).

I read Penny Arcade ever Mon/Wed/Fri and find it to be consistently entertaining, and informative commentary on the games industry at large. Every time a new game scandal erupts, my first thought is, "I wonder what Gabe and Tycho will say about this."

Since this is America, it's perfectly acceptable for you to disagree with me. But you can't dispute PA's influence. They have probably *millions* of regular readers (I've ranges from a low of 800,000 to a high of 4.8 million). I've checked out many games based on their recommendation. Some I've liked, some not, but they definitely influenced me to at least check them out.

What exactly does what they and their wives look like in real life matter?

It's not what they look like in real life that's the problem - it's that the comic caricatures bear no physical resemblance whatsoever to those two guys, and are highly flattering (to the extent that a two-dimensional stylized drawing can be). If I were to draw a caricature of myself it would at least look something like me, big nose and all.
