Half-Life 2: Episode Two Delayed

Valve opens up in Leipzig on EuroGamer (thanks Petr) is an interview with Valve's Doug Lombardi about the next installment in the Half-Life 2 saga, focusing on the news that the game is not going to make it to retail until February of next year. Here's a bit that explains this disappointing news about a project what was said to be coming "shortly" when it was first discussed this past February (story):
No, it's just sort of classic Valve being overly aggressive on our dates. But we're aiming for Q1 right now and we're really far along in the playtest stage. You know, our thing is always that we're trying to make really good experiences and so we're going to manage to that rather than the schedule.

Far Cry was more fun than HL2, period. HL Ep2 is just running thru the same city (again) fighting the same enemys..AGAIN.
Crysis truly looks cinematic, even if it had the same setup from Far Cry it'd still be more fun.

End of story

Crysis will likely make these games feel like Pong. Even if they're fun, well made games, they'll still feel ancient and archaic.

Based on what, the videos?

Crysis could very well end up to be a pretty tech demo. Whatever happened to gameplay over graphics (barring extreme situations) that was always so popular here, does everyone lose it when a pretty game comes out?

Can our computers even run Crysis?

That said, I don't see a comparison there, either, which is why I think episodic gaming is a major problem. I mean, I'll buy E2. I'll buy E2 for Portal alone. TF2 looks great, and E2 itself is just gravy. But... will there be something similar to Portal to get me to buy E3? And, as many people here know, I'm pretty into Half Life. But E1 felt dated to me. Imagine how dated it will all feel 8 damn months from now.

But if you think this is bad, how will SiN Episodes 2 and 3 fare? I had an argument with one of the Ritual guys here about this, he swore it would be fine. But c'mon, SiN Episode 3 vs. Crysis? Crysis will likely make these games feel like Pong. Even if they're fun, well made games, they'll still feel ancient and archaic.

Let's face it - video games, by and large, do not hold up well.

Seriously, if we know they take their time with releases, and they know, then stop fucking cockteasing us with shit like "Holiday 2006" and just say "When its done". I've got no problem waiting, you knew you werent gonna make it ya little bastards.. Ep2, TF2, and Portal (not the same devs but still), you're better off keepin it tight lipped.

Is anyone REALLY surprised at this news? I wonder...has Valve ever kept a ship date? In the end I don't really mind if it's a quality release. Whenever Valve quotes a ship date I always tack on 6 months. :>

Either way, anyone that buys it on Steam is a fool - you'll pick it up in store for much less

Not everywhere, where I live its about double the steam price in stores. I believe EP1 is around 35$ or more in most stores here now.

Psst... there are no trigens in Crysis.

Psst.. I know.. take another gander at what I said:

Will there be something in there like the Trigens to come along and fuck up everything good about it? Could easily be..

I know they've said numerous times that they've learned from their mistakes in FC, and won't be making the same ones for Crysis... and I certainly hope that's true.

But I'm still not going to forget that these are still the same people who shipped a game featuring Trigens once, and presumably thought that was a good idea at the time. Who knows what sort of madness might seize them this time?

However good Cryis is, it won't take away from Episode 2. First because a lot of people won't be able to run Crysis as it's supposed to be run. Source still runs on my 9800 Pro and looks pretty good doing so. Second, because you don't buy one or the other - you buy both if you're into FPS and neither if you're not. Perhaps you buy one in January and one in February, but if you enjoyed FarCry and enjoyed HL2, you're probably interested in both. The fact that Crysis may or may not be awesome doesn't mean Ep2 isn't. Third because Valve could sell Gabe Newell's poop, even if it was delayed in being crapped out. Say what you will (and I'm sure some will) about Valve's games but it's a fact that their games will sell. Crytek have one decent game to their name. Valve have several.

On another theme, it seems we (the board) were right that the Ep2/Portal/TF2 bundle will cost more than the $20 that Ep1 launched at. It'll be interesting to see how much it goes for. Either way, anyone that buys it on Steam is a fool - you'll pick it up in store for much less.

Finally, the gameplay videos on YouTube look awesome. I'm a huge fan of Valve's past games and am very much looking forward to this one.

This is no news because Valve always misses mid/long term release dates, and sometimes even short term. So... if it turns out as cool as it looks, I dont care to wait a bit more...

Great stuff.

After watching that awesome video of TF2 that Mopap posted I am really looking forward to the next Episode now. I think that will most certainly be the best part of the release moreso than the continuation of the HL2 storyline!

Hehe this just confirms my beliefs in episodic releases.
Release part of a game, get a little money for it, finish it later and charge some more money. That way Valve can work on small parts of their games at a time and get paid under way instead of working 3-4 years without selling anything
I feel sorry for those who actually believed Valve was capable of finishing something they started within a reasonable timeframe.

Q1, right about the time Crysis is supposed to be released. I don't see episodes working out for Valve if their second episode doesn't arrive until after the next generation of first person shooters are out and about

I could say for my part that you are...completely mistaken. I am not NOT going to miss this:

Me too.

Seriously. Crysis vs. EP2???? No contest. Crytek once made a (1; ONE) nice-looking game with a VARIETY of different kinds of Trigens in it.. they're on very VERY strict probation with Crysis.. it's gonna look great, I'm sure, but is there a game in there somewhere? Dunno.. Will there be something in there like the Trigens to come along and fuck up everything good about it? Could easily be..

Valve, on the other hand, just keeps doing what they do better and better and better with each release. They can take as long as they damn want to release their games and it's just fine with me.. they don't enter into competition with other games for my attention..
