Out of the Blue

Have my follow-up visit today with Dr. Toothy to finish off my root canal and get a permanent filling. Funny thing is, even with the temporary filling this tooth had been more comfortable whether chewing on it or not than in was before it flared up, confirming that to was just a problem waiting to happen for a long time. Anyway, today's procedure is not supposed to be traumatic, so here's hoping that turns out to be true.

No problem. Just remember to limit yourself to resolutions that your monitor can pull off.

No worries about that. I always play at 1280x1024 or even 1024x768, so with this card I should now be able to run 6xFSAA and 16xAF AND HDR and still get good framerates.

I was tempted to go with an X1900XT, since it seems to outperform the 7900GT (especially in Oblivion), but that dual slot solution just sucks.

It'll be nice to finally join the HDR era!

If you do not mind the extra cost they are fine. My printer can do it and I have tried it before, turns out decent. Though they do fade some over time (at least mine does).

99.999% of the time I use a blue or black Sharpe.

Yeah, they suck….ok, maybe not, but not necessary. You have to have special CD’s, and they are expensive (well…expensive relative to1-2 cents for a normal cd-r bought in volume). Sure it is more “professional” but if you are not trying to send out samples amongst the music industry I would stick with printing labels (just use your regular printer with them, just special sticker paper with the proper cut outs….nice).

I've used paper labels before, and, honestly, I find them either not staying on properly or eventually peeling off through use, making a characteristic "flutter" noise while spinning in the optical drive. A stack of those special CDs I've got already, so the next logical step would be...

But anywho, thanks, Enahs.

Hardware rec question here:

I noticed an Epson R220 inkjet printer in CompUSA that went for $99... which I thought was pretty good, and then I noticed it can print directly onto CD (for labelling). Newegg users seem to favor it, but I was wondering if there were any thoughts from anyone here... I plan on producing several copies of an album of sorts I'm putting together - not mass-produced, just a few handfuls to distribute to friends, venues and labels - not that I have high expectations.

Thanks,

I would almost welcome a dialogue change in the real world to something more akin to how it is portrayed in the show. They make it seem that even Steve the gimp, previously known as Steve the drunk, has... erm, had, a more eloquent vocabulary than the average drunken bigoted prick.

Thanks you two

That 7900 GT 512MB looks very sweet. I'm not that fond of a dual card solution, and it looks like the 1900s only come in dual cards.

The only worry with the 7900 is noise, but I guess I can always get really crazy and try to *gasp* change out the stock fan for a Zalman or something.
(It seems that isn't necessary, as eVGA have reenabled the fan controller on their model.)

Thanks again!

For less then $350 you can get a 7900GT, 512MB (not the lower end GS)
Or a X1900XT, 512 MB (will probably average ~$20-30 cheaper then the 7900GT). If you get an ATI make sure you get one that has the CrossFire option (not all do) and then extra $5 is well worth the future easy upgrade.

As for better, they are about the same actually. Just search for benchmarks and compares to the games you would typically play. Or if you like one company better or can find a better deal…really the differences are minimal.

I can't pin down any benchmarks but from what I remember the 7900 GTs are the best bang for the buck, not to mention eVGAs cards are tweaked well beyond standard.

IIRC you can also trade in an eVGA card within 90 days and get what you paid for it to put toward a new card.

Now, I'll get back to tracking my orders to find out when my 7950 GX2 is getting here.

Edit: Haven't looked at it yet, but here ya go:

Graphics cards Aug 21, 2006, 20:18

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting a new graphics card, as my X800XL is beginning to stutter a bit when I ask it to run everything on max, but since I haven't been keeping up with graphics recently, I'm not really sure which card to get.

I've done some digging around for graphics card comparisons, but it seems the only ones I can find are from 2005 and older.

I'm looking at either the ATI X1900 series (whichever one is the best bang for the buck) or the Nvidia 7800/7900 series. I'm really not looking to spend more than about 350 bucks, but newegg shows quite a few models in both series within that price range.

The 7900GS looked very promising, but I'm seeing a lot of comments that say it's a very unstable card and suffers from artifacting/crashes etc, and then you need to RMA it to get a newer version which had a particular bug fixed. That sounds pretty ominous.

Does anyone here have either one of these series of cards? Any recommendations? Anyone know of any recent comparison article?

Thanks

Creston

Dear Blues News,

Over the past several days, this website has been innundated with an ever-increasing number of advertisements. Some are very graphic and not safe for work. More often than not, these are being triggered by simple clicking on a link. Also, several overlay ads with hidden areas and obscured close buttons trick the user into clicking on the ad, leading to fraudulent revenues.

As a long time subscriber to this website, I implore you to take a stand and make a change. Personally, I do not want to stare at pictures of Kevin Bacon in his underwear. I can not speak for the rest of your audience.

Kind Regards,
fredrickson
