Company of Heroes Gold

After a false start this morning (story), a post to the Relic Forums by THQ has word that Company of Heroes is Gold (thanks Frans). The announcement is short and simple, not offering a release date for the World War II RTS game:
OK, despite all of your best efforts to jinx the process, Company of Heroes has offcially gone gold

FYI, they're also updating the beta to the gold code level and balance changes (as it was several weeks behind for the most part).

Infantry can do very well against tanks. Sticky bombs, Stormtroopers, etc. The airborne/ranger (infanty company) list and blitzkreig doctrine kick ass against tanks.

There are only 2 sides but three different ways of playing with each side thanks to the doctrines.

S'okay. I still prefer Dawn of War so I'll be buying the expansion over this.

/doesn't like the idea of only playing with 2 sides
//infantry combat is fun but it turns to hell when the tanks come out

A public beta is just that... a BETA. B is for beta, B is for bugs. I fully expect these things to be fixed in retails. As you said yourself, serverside, so they don't have to shell out a patch to fix it.

I have good confidence in Relic.

It's the old sell it now and patch it later routine. Unless it's just their servers and network is hosed, that would be a saving grace.

From what I've seen over playing an absolute ton of this over the last couple of weeks, it's almost certainly their servers. When you can have 2000 people online for 2 days straight with no connection errors, and then 500 on the 3rd day with connection errors up the ass, and no client patch on any of those days? Completely serverside.

I do have hope though. When the game was crashing repeatedly when more than 600 people were on just 2 weeks ago, and then less than a week later 2000 are on and MAYBE you'll get a chat room join error? Yeah that's a hell of an improvement.

Once you're in-game all the problems go away too. Running this thing on a good system with all the eye candy on, it's just awesome. It's a shame that you barely notice it while you're trying to annihilate your opponents, though. Thankfully they have a (spartan) replay system in place. Going back and watching the big fights from non-tactical angles is a great way to kill the time.

Surely Relic are the daddies of this genre atm. That is until Gas Powered Games get their bad boy out the door.

Can't wait for Company of Heroes. The start of many AAA titles to come in the coming months.

Hardcore: I agree. I cannot start a game. It is buggy, disconnections, etc. Even the tutorial was buggy too!

I understand they’re going to continue the beta test but close it down for just those who have pre-ordered, good luck getting a non-biased update to the game’s pre-release state from them.

You understand wrong then. They are releasing more keys to pre-order people, but will keep the beta open for anyone already in.

Most of the RO problems originally came from a client bug that overloaded the servers. Now thats been fixed there is a serverside database issue which is being worked on and wouldnt affect the status of a gold candidate.

Its certainly better than gamespys multiplayer 'service'. And direct ip will be in for retail, but obviously wont be in a beta (you could play it for free forever then)

The public beta has been horrendous, over the last week. Infact you really cant play and if you do you are bombarded with lag messages all of the time. Other times you get kicked from the lobby and I have a kick ass connection. I am totally suprised they went gold with current issues like this. But it does have autopatching so I guess their will be a few waiting for the retail folks.

They will still have the beta going till release so maybe I will be able to play again (if they get it working before it hits shelves). Which makes sense because how are retail folks going to get patches unless we test them to get Relic Online working properly over the next month

It's the old sell it now and patch it later routine. Unless it's just their servers and network is hosed, that would be a saving grace.

The game is pretty cool though when it works, not manna from heaven, but cool.

Obviously no game is ever perfect at release, well not these days anyway but I was figuring they were going to press for a release given the countdown timer on Planet CoH is only 26 days from release, I still had reserved hope that they would announce a delay to polish the multiplayer. This game has all the makings to be a huge hit but unfortunately the RO instability and the inability to connect to games reliably is leaving me with déjà vu over fighting with Battlefield 2’s crappy server browser, unfortunately with CoH it appears you have to use their online service to play the multiplayer portion online.

I understand they’re going to continue the beta test but close it down for just those who have pre-ordered, good luck getting a non-biased update to the game’s pre-release state from them.

From the makers of the homeworld games, then it has to be good. Christ Homeworld was by far the most revolutionary RTS of all time, and graceful in the controls, amazing.

Sick to death of WW2 but will try this just because of their track record.

All of "Your" best efforts? So now inept publishers/developers blame the gaming community when they screw up? Very amusing.

Uh, Creston, this "OK, despite all your best efforts [...]" quote is a direct quote from a single reply inside a large thread over at the Relic Forums. Just read through the thread in which this quote originated. He wasn't "blaming the community," he was simply kidding around with some of the other posters' replies.

Or stay ignorant and attempt to bash one of the better developers around right now.

You control your guys squads at a time, nice thing though is little dots appear representing where every guy will end up when you move them, so you can tell if they are all going to be in cover, etc (various types of cover matter).

Well the cell phone version of this game that I'm working on is still pretty buggy. So that's going to take a while to get ported.

PC Gamer apparently gave this a 96%. Stand back, this is about to be the RTS of the decade, I suspect. Starcraft 2, should it ever arise, won't touch it. You read it here first.

I thought the open beta was fairly good, but highly reminiscient of Dawn Of War and to a lesser extent Soldiers: Heroes Of World War II.
