Counter-Strike: Source Plans

A new Steam Marketing Message (thanks Frans) has a screenshot of a new HDR version of the Counter-Strike: Source map Train as well as details on changes to the CS:S radar that will impact gameplay, all due in an update they expect to be releasing in a couple of weeks:
Soon, we'll be releasing the first in a series of updates to Counter-Strike: Source which will be focused on moving the core Counter-Strike gameplay forward.

The first update will include an updated version of the map Train, which will feature an HDR lighting pass, some minor layout changes, and a number of small bugfixes.

The second facet of this release will be a completely reworked radar system. There will be a significant change to the aesthetics of the radar, but there are also some fairly significant gameplay ramifications to the new system. One example: when you look directly at an enemy for a long enough time for their name to appear on your screen, everyone on your team will be able to see that enemy in the radar. We're planning on releasing this first update in about two weeks.

Excellent post. THank you so much for expressing your utter ignorance of the game. Everyone that has skills will immediately see that you have none at all.

If Friendly-Fire is on, I won't make the noob mistake of shooting my teammates because I look at my radar & know EXACTLY where they are at all times.

And while you're looking at the radar you make the noob-mistake of completly getting front-raged.

Any decent player will see someone and be able to ident them as a teammate or enemy FAR outside of the radar's range.

I've never been good at the game, but I keep relatively to date with the competitive scene, and I can say with relative assurance that the high-skilled players rarely use the radar.

LOL! I love those kinds of replies.

It's been the top-played game continuously for years.
Most people are not hacking; you just plain suck.

I also play Warcraft3 Mod for the game a lot, just because it's fun to level up; and yes there are hackers there too, but so fucking what. I'm still in the top 5 every game I play. A lot of people are good at that game. Just because you aren't doesn't mean that it's a bad game; just that you're a bad player.

Sepharo's right. Radar isn't just useful for FPS games, it is essential.

I glance at my radar about once every 5 seconds. This allows me to know EXACTLY where my teammates are at all times. Knowing this gives me information and information wins wars. If someone on my team dies, I know EXACTLY where that happened. If Friendly-Fire is on, I won't make the noob mistake of shooting my teammates because I look at my radar & know EXACTLY where they are at all times.

I was in shock when I read some of the comments about the radar not being of use. I would beat the living shit out of any moron that cannot successfully understand his environment.

Ahh you said it before I had the chance to Propagandhi.

All these guys saying they've never used the radar must be really bad because I can't imagine not using it. I remember how sometimes it used to dissapear on map loads sometimes and I just couldn't play.

You guys who never use the radar must be the ones shooting me up all the time when FF is on.

Are you talking about the 1982 Atari game or the upcoming FEAR Combat? They are the only games I can find that match your suggestion and neither one is even close to CSSource.

Everyone KNOWS Red Alert 2 is a MUCH better game than Quake!

I guess I'm in the minority, I used radar constantly. Tells you where guys are and it takes very little concentration.. glance up, notice one guy here, one guy there, oh someone died, that guy there isn't there anymore so the enemy must be _____.

edit: useD, I barely play anymore...

The radar was always underused.. though if you kept an eye on it long enough and one of your teammates died, you could tell where the enemy was coming from.

Wonder why they didn't make more changes to CS:S in the first place?

It's a joke that updating old maps to HDR is taking so long, if indeed it will ever happen. Not that I use it, though, as the effect is completely over-the-top and distracts from the gameplay (nevermind the performance hit).

I wish they'd release some more maps... there are still several good maps that haven't been converted yet and new maps would be appreciated. Really, minus HDR, this is where the game should have been at release - I can't believe it took them over a year to add different player models and more maps. I really hope Team Fortress 2 is different, as I don't want to pay for a game with 3 maps and then have the game "expand" to what it should have been in the first place.

/Rant over.

However I dont understand why they chose de_train to update first with HDR when its not a popular map at all in CSS.

Probably because it has a decent amount of detail in it, as well as a good mix of light and dark areas. Should be a good map for showing off the HDR.

Information doesn't want to be free, it wants to be tied up and spanked. It told me so itself, in a naughty little whisper.

he zombie-tag server mod for CS is a good time waster, although most of the level designs are horrible.

I'm not sure what that is, but the name reminds me of a Garry's Mod game called Zombie Survival. Dark maps, a BUTTLOAD of NPC zombies, and a single human zombie. As you get killed, you turn into a zombie yourself. All the humans have to do is live for a certain time to win. Humans get more weapons the more frags they get, and zombies can become fast zombies, poison zombies, as more humans get killed.

Fun as hell mini-mod, too bad the guy who made it is a complete asshole.

I've been playing CS a lot again also, I've pretty much given up BF2 at this point. The zombie-tag server mod for CS is a good time waster, although most of the level designs are horrible. I've played cs since the first beta and I don't think I've ever looked at the radar once for a gameplay reason. This is an interesting change and makes the radar actually useful.

Why not make changes like this? Sounds like an interesting change to me, and one that isnt going to have a negative on gameplay, but a positive one. Im interested to see what the other aestherics are that they refered to.

I havent played CSS in awhile, but will definitely check this out. However I dont understand why they chose de_train to update first with HDR when its not a popular map at all in CSS.
