Threat level red. Scary stuff indeed. Just our luck that we have our first plane trip in the longest time coming up pretty soon. Hopefully this will all settle down quickly, obviously for more significant reasons than my own travel convenience.

Camara, can we change that script to actually change the word BOOBIES into PICTURES of boobies?

It's possible, but wouldn't that make this site Not Safe For Work...? Only if you have FF, Greasemonkey and the script I suppose, but I'd rather not have Blue ban my ass.

I certainly don't think it's right for the gov't to know what we're doing, yet at the same time we are not allowed to know what the gov't is doing. All this spying equipment comes from our tax dollars. We have a right to know how that money is being spent, because the gov't is supposed to work for us. It's a matter of trust. If our own government can't trust us, and we can no longer trust the gov't, then we have failed as a society.

How does one stop the terrorists? By not creating them in the first place.

I am of the opinion that the USA is now facing terrorist acts because the USA created the terrorists by sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. We are truly a disposasble society. We create dictators like Saddam Hussein, use them up, and then throw them away when they are no longer useful to us. It was only a matter of time until certain groups got sick of the USA throwing its weight around, meddling in their own countries, and decided to do something about it. We gotta think about WHY people are hating the USA so much that they are now bringing the fight to our shores.

We were able to win the Cold War without whizzing our freedoms down our legs. Now all of a sudden, in order to defeat an enemy that supposedly hates us because of our way of life, we have to give up that way of life? Did we turn into a nation full of chicken shits?

I'm not advocating that we become ostriches and all stick our heads in the sand, we certainly need to know what's going on in our country and elsewhere. I'm saying that there are better things to spend billions of dollars on than some bullshit war against a country that is about as threatening as the Salvation Army. We don't need to spend billions of dollars on cameras and listening devices. How about some health care? How about money for an education? How about getting our country off oil?

Ugh, I know I'm not forming a coherent argument here, I got totally off topic and I'm rambling - I do agree with many of your points, I just think we as a country need to focus more on getting our own shit in order before meddling elsewhere and causing people to hate us when they never used to before. Or hate us even more than before.

Let's put it this way: would it be okay for us (gov't) to put a camera in every room in your house (and I do mean every)? Could we examine your banking, shopping and phone records? Could we keep track of all the websites you visit? Could we put a microchip in your car, or maybe even insert one into your skin so we know where you are at all times?

If you're not doing anything 'wrong' then you should have nothing to worry about. Though we will determine what is 'wrong' at any given moment, and we will never be specific as to what we consider to be 'wrong' - we will be as vague as possible.

If that doesn't scare you, try reading Orwell's '1984' sometime...

Everyone always seems to view '1984' as some kind of dictum of the future. Surveillance in and of itself isn't necessarily going to lead to a police state (the kind we see in 1984, or even worse.)

You only need to look back to good old Joe McCarthy and the House UnAmerican Activities to see just how crazy paranoid things can get even without surveillance (since there just wasn't any around in those days, really.)

While I understand and worry about the implications of heightened security and its effect on a person's right to privacy, the fact is that the Bad Guys are getting a whole lot harder to catch. UNLESS we keep up at least to some extent in our surveillance methods, we're going to come to a point where they can just do whatever the fuck they want. And then what? We'll all sit in our own homes, windows barred and shuttered, doors locked six times, scared to even go outside because some fundamentalist nutjob might drop a fucking plane on your ass?

I think it's fairly safe to assume that had security NOT increased after 9/11, these 21 bastards would NOT have been caught, and there would now have been upwards of a few thousand people spread in little chunks all over the Atlantic ocean.

A police state is no way to live, but neither is a state in which the bad guys can do to you whatever they wish, whenever they wish.

And sure, Bodolza will blab about "Fighting for your rights," but I can guarantee that if those planes had blown up with one of HIS family members in it, he'd be howling at the government for "Not stopping the terrorists!"

It's always easy to shrug this off when it's happening to other people. Just think if your dad/brother/sister/son had been in the WTC at 9/11, how you'd feel then.
"It's just a few thousand people, and cancer kills more every year" my fucking ass. Let's hear you say that again when YOUR mom is splattered all over the fucking Atlantic.

Surveillance in and of itself isn't inherently bad, it's what's done WITH that surveillance that's a threat. And it's a tricky line to walk. How far do you take it? What should and shouldn't be allowed?
All I'm saying is that at both ends of the spectrum, it would lead to a world that wouldn't really be worth living in.

Camara, can we change that script to actually change the word Starforce into PICTURES of boobies?

I'm happy the Camaro is coming back, but not too crazy about the looks of the concept (basically it's a spaced-out version of the '69), and I don't think I'd ever buy one because I like mine just fine. I'm sure there will be plenty of these at the local classic car cruises. Ugh.

Yeah! Now I can still go back to singing "Bitchin Camaro" by The DeadMilkmen. Song kicks so much ass.

Intrestingly with no coffee to drink I decided to actually eat breakfast this morning, so I had a bowl of cereal for the first time in a long long time. Truly this feel like a weird, small but significant life changing event!

I have been eating oatmeal for the last month every morning - I must say I have a hell of a lot more energy in the AM and I don't get tired after lunch anymore. It was very difficult eating a nice lunch and sitting at my desk all day. (when not posting here heheheheh)

Easy, your host file.
Windows XP location:
%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
It has no extension, just edit it manually.
Then link the domains you want to the ip address of stopwastingtime.com or whatever. To just disable it set it to your local host.
Just type “host file” into google if you want more info, but it is pretty self explanatory I think. Just uhh…do not forget about it and drive your self crazy one day when you want to access those sites and can not figure out how.

what does the boobies filter do?

Changes all mention of S t a r F o r c e into BOOBIES... It was created as sort of a gag during the time of the various SF 'debates' around here. Though I suppose it could be turned into a swear filter easily enough. But contrary to um, certain people's opinions, I'm not THAT into censorship.

Does the apparent thwarting of the UK plot justify government surveillance?

Seriously, if you're worried that the government will misuse surveillance cameras to track political opponents and agitators (not engaged in terrorism) or to keep tabs on tax cheats and marriage cheats or to profile the populace in general then isn't your problem with your Government not the cameras? I mean guns don't kill people, people do. And cameras don't hurt people, politicians do. Keep the cameras, change the politicians.

It's not really "politicians", it's human nature. It only shows up with politicians because they happen to be the ones that get a large degree of that type of power. Changing to different politicians isn't likely to help much.

Which, imo, isn't really the point anyway. There's gotta to be a balance between individual rights and group security. I mean, going to the extreme, one could suggest planting chips in everyone's head to monitor their thoughts 24/7, and arresting anyone who even thinks about committing a crime (assuming we had that technology, of course). I'd be highly surprised if anyone thought that was a good idea. On the other side, absolutely no security means that criminals have no fear of getting caught. So there has to be a balance. It's just a matter of where that line should be drawn. For a lot of people, constant video surveillance is a little too far to go. I'd have to agree. It's not the potential for abuse that bothers me so much as my inherant desire for privacy.

Returns? I read the site every day. I just don't post as much as nin and Dan, that's all.

This is just GM repeating history like back in the 60's (and cashing in on the 'retro' craze of course). Ford introduced the Mustang in April of '64 and GM brought out their version of the 'pony car' in '67.

I knew this would happen, ever since I saw the concepts of the '05 Mustang. Since the Canadian plant that used to build the Camaro no longer exists, GM is free to use the name again.

I'm happy the Camaro is coming back, but not too crazy about the looks of the concept (basically it's a spaced-out version of the '69), and I don't think I'd ever buy one because I like mine just fine. I'm sure there will be plenty of these at the local classic car cruises. Ugh.

Tonneau cover for a truck Aug 10, 2006, 18:51
Aug 10, 2006, 18:51

I'm thinking of getting a tonneau cover for my truck (hard fiberglass one) like one of these:

http://www.leer.com/fordmodel21.html (700 series - 550 isn't as good and the 800 isn't available out here in the western USA, according to the accessory shops I've talked to).

http://www.snugtop.com/products/sl.cfm

I like the looks of the Snugtop better and it weighs less if I want to remove it, but when removed it leaves the rails on the bed (the Leer rails and cover come off together in one piece). That's probably not a real big deal, though. The Leer is about $970 total, the Snugtop is more like $1,300. Probably leaning towards the Snugtop right now despite the cost.

Anyone have suggestions/recommendations? Anyone use either of these?

Thanks.

Edit - OK, I can get the Leer 800 for about $1,220 out the door, and it too leaves the rails on the bed.

The shells Leer sells are about $1,500-$1,800 for the 100 XL and XQ respectively. Never driven a truck with a shell on it. How is visibility? It looks like these would be pretty good in that department. Hmmmm.

There will come a moment when you have the chance to do the right thing.

I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.
