as I liked to jump on their heads and shoot straight down without them having a clue where I went.

hah. reminds me of my first quake days. people on our server were still on the keyboard including myself. until i put 2 and 2 together. i remember approaching them from the back and throwing in a few shotgun blasts, then by the time they had turned around I would already be on their other side with the fatal shots.

Hay - didn't we have a HL2 server at one point?

Someone needs to set something up so we can hash this shit out online!?

A long time ago someone suggested I try a really LOW sensitivity in ET, and I never believed it because I was shooting fine. I tried it, and my accuracy in matches went up on average 5-6%, and was hitting MUCH more headshots. I still use high sensitivities in most games, especially those that dont have head hitboxes. Like if I were to try a low sens in Quake3, my rail would go up (although it already blows) but the rest of my weapons would suffer.

Remember in AQ2 - the sensitivity changed when you went to sniper?
I use scripts in most games to change the sensitivity depending on the gun I choose. Therefore, when I switch to sniper the button press changes sensitivity to 20%, when I go to rifle, etc., sensitivity either resets to 80% or it changes to another %.

Make sense? Makes it a lot easier to control each weapon.

Ultimately it's about what you are used to and comfortable with. I play with an above average sensitivity, but can never go too high or too low or it just feels wrong. I'm always one of the better FPS players in any game I play and my controls definitely do not hinder me.

Depends on the game. ET and CS you want a very low sensitivity, Quake3/4 you'll want a high sens.

As for the buttons, my pinky finger alone controls 3 to 7 buttons on any give FPS, most of which are non essential to quick gameplay. ie: checking scores, opening doors, and reloading. But yes, I'd say I have fairly high dexterity with my pinky.

WASD for life...

Like someone pointed out earlier: My pinky isn't even capable of doing anything other than holding down ctrl or shift. I don't see it being able to hit q and a with any dexterity even if I did use esdf or something else.

I can hit any key on the keyboard with my left thumb which normally rests on the spacebar for jumping. And it's not very often you use and advanced control while jumping so it works out just fine.

My left hand is permanently different from my right hand from using WASD for so long. My pinky has a hook when it's relaxed that corresponds directly with ctrl and my middle finger is longer on my left hand than my right.

That's what happens when you play too many first person shooters during growth spurts...

Whoa, Batman that key config does seem a little trippy, but whatever you are used to, I know I cannot play a game unless I can invert the y-axis on my mouse, it’s like a yoke or joystick push down-go down, pull up-go up.

Oh, and I also have 4 more buttons on my mouse, as if it matters. I just don't like using the forward button during gaming. It requires me to push my thumb a little forward, lessening my grip

???

Why not just rest your finger on it?
Or get a mouse that fits your hand.

I have access to more of the keyboard by using a row of keys rather than a group. I have 4 buttons on mouse other than LMB and RMB.

No. You don't. You use the exact same keys I do, and therefore have access to the exact same number of keys I do. The only difference between us is that I have my middle finger pushed one forward, and I rest my pinky slightly more to the left.

So if we're using the exact same keys, only in a different format, how do you think you have more keys? Does a "portal" exist under your ring finger that lets you hit some of the numeric keys without moving your hand?

Think about it for a minute. The only real difference between our keys is that I keep my middle finger extended (no surprise there.) If you can tell me how that would lead to you having more keys I'll admit I am wrong. But looking at my fingers, and putting them the way you use them and the way I use them, well, there's no difference in the ease in which I can hit any key...

You do realize you're using less keyboard than I am, right? If you keep your fingers on sdfg and I keep mine on shift-sef then I actually have my fingers more spread out than you do. So you're "small hands" argument makes no sense. Which is kind of fitting.

Funny - you are wrong. Imagine that.

I have access to more of the keyboard by using a row of keys rather than a group. I have 4 buttons on mouse other than LMB and RMB. I showed basic controls - as we have had this discussion many times.

That might have been fine 7yrs ago but it's not very practical now and it's easier having it set for alternate weapon mode, for sniper rifles and such. That is such an awkward setup I'm surprised that anyone would choose it.

Right thumb is alternate - when used for something else, T is alternate.

I have access to ~ - 9, TAB, qwertyui, ahjk, shift, ctrl, zxcvbnm,./, left alt, right alt , without lifting my left hand.

Name a game and I will play a deathmatch - email is in my profile.

If you are 12 I guess using esdf is ok, but adults have bigger hands.

Anyway, I use this:
e - forward
d - backwards
s - strafe left
f - strafe right
w - use
r - reload
shift - duck
ctrl - walk
mouse1 - shoot
mouse2 - alt fire/melee
mouse3 - zoom
wheelup - next weapon
wheeldown - previous weapon (why is the default reversed?)

gives me q, a, z, t, g, v all within easy access for various features. Yet, somehow, even with five mouse buttons and all of those, I ran out of easy keys with FEAR.

But yeah, Batman. Your hands must be tiny if they're comfortable resting all in a row like that. I space mine out a bit more, and stagger them on different levels.

Yeah, it is.

de_dust was also a big part of the reason why I originally quite playing CS.

It wasn't the best map. Yet many servers either played it exclusively, or simply had it in the heaviest rotation.

wow, I can't believe you guys use simple controls like that. Don't you get beat to a pulp?
Seems slow and awkward with your hands in that tiny little space. Why not somehting more natural?

S - Crouch
D - Strafe Left
F - Move Back
G - Strafe Right

RMB - Forward
LMB - Fire
Crouch as S? That means all you fingers are in very close proximity to each other. Not only that but it's also more difficult to locate the keys because they're not at the very edge of the keyboard. Finally... RMB as forward? That might have been fine 7yrs ago but it's not very practical now and it's easier having it set for alternate weapon mode, for sniper rifles and such. That is such an awkward setup I'm surprised that anyone would choose it.

Myself:

WASD = Directions
Ctrl = Crouch
Shift = Walk
Space = Jump

It's really easy to locate the keys, even in the dark, as with my little finger on the Ctrl I know exactly where all the other buttons are. I have plenty of space between fingers and all my movement controls are located together, rather than spread onto the mouse. I'm amazed anyone can like RMB for forward - it makes it hard to reposition the mouse as if you lift to turn it's more difficult to hold the button down... high mouse sensitivity will help but it's far from ideal.

As for the level, yeah, 2fort. I don't recognize it.
To a lot of players TFC IS 2Fort. There used to be dozens (and maybe hundreds at the height of the game) of servers where that was the only map played. If you don't know 2Fort, you don't know TFC. I am not a CS player, but I think that De Dust is the analogous map for that game.

With that setup, I have access to the whole left side of the keyboard with a natural feeling. Also, most keyboards have he little nub or "tick" on F, so it is easy to make it back to home if you have to access anothe part of the keyboard. If you are 12 I guess using esdf is ok, but adults have bigger hands.

I use left shift to crouch. Often that's set to walk, but I'll put walk to ctrl. Honestly, I very rarely walk in games. If it's a game where I genuinely need to I'll find a different solution or strain for one of those functions. And I'll curse the damn windows button.

I hate toggle crouch.

As for the level, yeah, 2fort. I don't recognize it. My memory of TFC is fuzzy at best, though. I played for a little while, usually a spy, and had fun finding disorganized servers where I could just keep running into the base, taking the flag, capturing it, and repeating. Or the really disorganized levels where I could do it as the heavy gunner. But by now all I remember of the game is two forts constantly covered by lasers with a chasm between. Really nothing else. I was too absorbed in HLDM and CS.
