Guild Wars: Nightfall Details, PvP Event

This Guild Wars Press Release has details on the next chapter in Guild Wars, which will go by the recently revealed title Nightfall (story). Here's word on the add-on, and plans for a PvP event at the end of this month:
July 18, 2006 (BELLEVUE, WA) — ArenaNet®, developer of the world's leading subscription-free online roleplaying games Guild Wars® and Guild Wars FactionsTM, and NCsoft® Corporation, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announce today the title of the next game in the award-winning franchise, Guild Wars NightfallTM. Further, Guild Wars Nightfall has entered the beta testing stage and Guild Wars players worldwide are invited to participate in an exclusive, first-look player-versus-player (PVP) event, July 28 — 30, 2006.

During the PVP Preview Event, both Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions® players will get a first look at Guild Wars Nightfall, and will be able to try out the two new professions being introduced in the game; the Dervish, a scythe-wielding holy warrior, and the Paragon, guardian angel of the Elonian people. In addition to testing out the new professions and arenas, players will also be able to compete for items that will be exchangeable for a variety of rewards throughout the weekend event.

The Guild Wars Nightfall PVP Preview event will kick off on Friday, July 28 at 12:01am PDT and will continue through Sunday, July 30 at 11:59pm PST.

And, yet look at a game like Dungeons and Dragons Online. Half the people playing that game want PvP. The other half doesn't.

Edit: Well, yeah, I meant PvP.

Moral...can't keep everyone happy!

yup, hardly thrilling.

Anet, please:

Spruce up the game a bit. How's about more voice acting and the subtitle popups off by default? Still allow them for people with related disabilities naturally.

Lvl20 again? Please, no. Speak with Mensa, have a 'brain dump' but please please please work out some way so that we can take our lvl20 characters up to lvl40. There was a distinct lack of motivation in Factions, and the progression from a nobody to a lvl20 dude was the most satisfying part of original GW.

Make sorting out teams easier. I mean, c'mon, it can take longer than the quests themselves. I walk into a town, I check my quest list. I select a quest. An icon appears over the heads of all players who have this quest to do also. I now know who to invite instead of spamming the chat. Is that really so hard?

Stop with the artificial barriers to exploration. I can't go into an outpost because I haven't spoken to some dude? Or is it, I can't go into this outpost because if you do then you can do the mission and that would stuff things up. Why not make it so that you can go wherever you want, but the actual quests only open up after you've met certain people/done things, etc. I used to quite enjoy just taking a team out and exploring. No quest, or mission, just checking out locales I'd never seen before, just for the heck of it. Why not make some awesome market place be available in these far flung places? A reward for those who venture out a bit.

If "Nightfall" is going to be another Factions but set in <insert cultural history and architecture to approriate>, then I'll pass. If it's going to bring something genuinly new and satisfying to the table, you'll get my sale, but Factions was a big let down.

Post 4, you hit it 100%...I pretty much agree with all of that.

I really miss the exploring element from the original that seems missing in Factions. I ran into the exact issue you described last night. Went exploring, found a town, and oops, can't get in there until I go elsewhere. WTF?!

So true. Especially the teambuilding thing. Not just that, but there should be some kind of teambuilding interface for the people in your group: a popup csreen which lists the players !with the powers they have equiped! and a chat interface so you can quickly get your group set up with some good complementary powers, instead of asking 'hey, you got [skill x]?'.

As for the expnsion...nope, didn't grab me. A Middle eastern setting....meh. Although if they implement massive pve + exploration, you might find cool ruins, and quests relating to those found locations...but GW was never really about that much, which is a shame. But it does seem they've focussed on pvp in this expansion...again, just like the last one. No new races (it would be cool to play a beast race...would be cool for pvp /and/ pve), no interesting realy new environment...just a middle eastern derivative. Hell, why not try an african setting? Some cool, primeviel setting...aboriginee would be cool also, with the whole Dreaming setting. Oh well.

It seems that people have been brainwashed by Pay-to-Play MMOs in that, for some reason, grinding to get to a high level is 'fun' for them.

Please. Don't confuse Guild Wars with all the other MMOs that purposely impede your progress with grinding in other to keep you playing a game longer. If you want that sort of game, well, there's dozens of options for you to go for. If you want some extra grinding, feel free to play some of the korean-made games.

As for GW Factions, the purpose of the game isn't to use your extra high level to beat the monsters, but instead, to bring the focus on how you make your party. In other words, teamwork, as opposed to making GW just another 'my stats beats NPC's stats, so I win' type of game.

But hey, that's just my opinion... I enjoy the game as it is, I enjoyed how Factions focuses less on a grind-to-level-20 and instead focuses on skill (and by skill I mean, real-time decision making, on-the-fly adjustments to enemies and organizing your party's attack schemes).

Stop with the artificial barriers to exploration.

I never noticed any of these, where are they? I had an ascended character in the original GW by level 11 iirc (it was my 3rd character and I was trying to keep it low level).

Yeah, I agree that GW is about actually playing the game, as in gameplay being fun. But your statement is not true; Anet didn't include any party-building improvements. No way to group easier, no way to set up the party in a better/faster way once it was formed. So, what 'focus on how you make your party'?

I thought GW was about scantily dressed women fighting monsters.

*ducks*

I got both the original and factions and the original was good fun but I haven't really gotten into factions yet, since I don't really know anybody that plays it so I can't really do all of that group stuff. Sure I could group with people I don't know but I generally prefer to play with people I know.

And once again someone entirely misses the point of the level 20 cap. Guild Wars was not supposed to be a level grind game, it was supposed to be all about PvP. Having the cap at a low level like 20 allows more people to play PvP who would otherwise have not bothered to reach the maximum level.

Of course, whether GW really *is* all about PvP depends on who you ask. Personally I think it did neither PvP nor PvE well, but I quit before Factions even came out so I have no idea how that went over.

Not at all. We want more powerful spells. We want badder baddies. And we want bigger battles.

Oh, you still do plenty of that.

Then go play WoW. GW was never designed to be that kind of game. Or are you just unhappy with the way the game is presented?

And I agree, there is still plenty of grind, not just for levels but for unlocks too. Another reason why I quit...

I'll come clean, I'm not a MMO guru. Not at all. I've also got not much interest in the others in the field (WoW for example). A friend recommended GW to me, as a change from the FPS rut I was in, and I really liked the laid back pace, the exploration and satisfying progression. Plus, it was an easy way to get coop action with chums, as this seems to be on a par with quantum mechanics for FPS devs.

This term "grinding" seems too negative a term to me, but then maybe this is my subjectivity talking. What you see as, what I presume from the inflection, a chore, I see as progression. Conversely, I get not real sense of progression from the PvP aspects of the game.

Maybe Anet want a different audience than me, maybe they will get that audience as well. However, unless some sort of effort is given to the PvE aspect of the game, I'm probably going to have to pass this time around.

I agree that the PvE aspect of the game could use more attention, as I tend to enjoy that more than PvP, but unfortunately for us PvE fans GW has picked up a large competitive gaming following in Korea and Europe. In fact, Korea and Europe routinely dominate the Hall at most hours of the day. Feels to me like ANet is aiming this expansion squarely at that crowd, just like Factions was a nod to their largest player base's home territory.

Hell, I'll still probably play it.

I still haven't purchased factions. Dunno if I will bother. Doubt I will go for this one. There is only one thing that will keep me with GW, and that is if they improve the PvP. Now, I know that that's what factions is for, and what everyone is saying this new one is for, but they aren't improving it how I want, as near as I can tell.

I have no problem with the micro game--with the individual battles or anything like that. It just seems so empty, so void of any long-term progression. Perhaps the best thing to compare it to is Warcraft III. Now, that game has an amazing ladder system, and it has more than just one ladder. It has a ladder for the random team, for 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4--in each region. So, I could compete in my chosen gametype--3v3--and track my team's progress up the USWest ladder. I loved telling people I was in the top 200 in the USWest.

Also, I can go to the Battle.net web site and look at my personal stats. What hero did I use the most? Which race did I do best with? And TONS of other data that I loved to see.

With guild wars, I play a game (and have to find a 4th person because it's limited to 4v4), and then move on to the next. I suppose there's a little progression with titles and faction points, or whatever, but it simply isn't enough. Also, I don't play enough to compete for that lame ladder they have, with what, 1000 clans WORLDWIDE? How the hell am I supposed to get ranked on that? I guess I can join a clan that's ranked, but then that's my clan, not even my team.

Maybe Warcraft III just spoiled me. That ladder system--and don't even bring up the match-making system--was the best. Guild Wars PvP meta game just seems hollow next to it.
