Atari Sells Driver

Atari to Raise $24 Million Through Asset Divestiture (thanks Frans) has word that Atari has sold the Driver franchise, along with most of the assets of Driver developer Reflections, to Ubisoft for a reported $24 million. Word is: "Atari will maintain sell-off rights for a three month period for all Driver products except Driver: Parallel Lines, which the company retains until end of calendar 2006. Specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed and the agreement between the two companies is subject to normal closing conditions. The Company anticipates closing of the transaction to be completed prior to the end of its fiscal second quarter ending September 30, 2006."

and that is better than DrIVer?

1337 vs Roman's gogogogogo

DrIVer would obviously be more sensible. Completely sensible, in fact. I just like the hint of Jeff K you get with Driv4r.

But if I was a betting man, I'd say the Roman's will take it..

I miss the early Driver games. Back when it was about, you know, driving ...

That pretty much ended after the first game.

I'm glad Atari is losing this. Ubi couldn't possibly do any worse.

I heard something about Stuntman2 being farmed out to another dev. I hope they don't blow that too.

What a joke, unless the "most of the assets of developer Reflections" is worth 24 million, gold plated keyboards? Driver franchise drove away with any sense of identity after the second one.

Well now that Atari has taken a once leading edge high profile game and totally raped and pimped it to a laughable shell of its former glory, now they probably have no choice but to sell it. I wonder what other games they can turn out on the street?

Here's to hoping they sell the D&D rights to someone else.

I see them pushing NwN2 out the door to early and ruining it.

They could, but it's easier to get attention (good or bad) with an established franchise.

Couldn't they just make a driving game and call it something else?

Hopefully the new game will have a first mission that people can actually finish.

But why woudl Ubi soft even bother? I mean, does this series have any fans left after the last two?

Probably not, but as seen with Tomb Raider Legend, a good game can revitalize a dead series.

Maybe. But I'd definitely rather this in the hands of Ubisoft than any other number of publishers. But why woudl Ubi soft even bother? I mean, does this series have any fans left after the last two?

Maybe now the Driver series can actually live up to its potential.
