Out of the Blue

Had a terrific time at the Smurfy birthday party yesterday. The Beast was an excellent choice of venue, they make a whole experience of it, with fun banter, fun music, and an arsenal of super soakers and water balloons just in case anyone stayed too dry. Definitely a good children destination, and probably not a bad fun first date either.

Getting experience for your resume and getting your school paid for. Priceless
While UK university/college fees are nowhere near the crazy US heights (arguments pro and con), having my last year (and this year) paid for by the firm I am going to join August 2007 and a living allowance made a huge difference. University fees here are ~$2000pa, fees at the (private) college I have to go to are ~$15k. Funny thing is, most (4/5) people there are funding themselves in the hope of being picked up by a law firm later on and being able to say in a few years "pff $15k, mere pocket change!" Personally I prefer my way of doing it

I don't know, I've heard that MBAs are plentiful, but looking at the different programs there in, it still seems pretty diverse in that you have a lot of different fields to choose from. Really, I'm wanting to be able to take my degree and work internationally with it.

If for the next 5 weeks I call all of you assholes and hope you all die miserable horrible deaths, and your families too….you now know why. Please forgive me.

hahahhaa That isn't any different from any other set of 5 weeks!

Along the masters thing - yes, it is best to have 3-5 years in a field of which you plan to get your masters in. the MBA? Eh, dime a dozen. It would be better to find a certain field to get a masters in. The masters is starting to be looked upon like a college degree was 10 years ago - pretty soon, it will be, "If you want a job, you need to get a masters". Sad. Really sad.

Yes it is true, you can get a masters, apply for a job at a diff company than you are working and make a butt load more. It is pathetic.

I was waiting to do the masters to see if I will be in law enforcement or stay in business. If I am in LE then I would go the law route, city planner, human resources, etc. If I stay in business, then I will probably go human resources, economics, political science, etc. Just depends on the path I take in the next 6-12 months.

I refuse to pay for a masters program out of my pocket, so I am looking for an employer to do it. I suggest everyone else do the same. Work FT and have your company pay for it. It may take a little longer, but in the long run, it is worth it. Getting experience for your resume and getting your school paid for. Priceless.

It's best to put a few years between you and college before going for an MBA. In some fields that only needs to be two years (Consulting and Investment Banking almost require you to get an MBA after two years if you want to stay with them). Other than that though you probably want 3 years in between. Your work during that time does not need to be business related, but it should be something remarkable.

Many people use the MBA as a pivot point in their career. For example my brother-in-law was an accountant for a number of years with PWC, got his MBA became a consultant and now does brand turn arounds for Hershey.

On the other hand, my brother, after getting his MBA, went back to the exact same field as before except making 4 or 5 times as much.

There's also the silicon valley special, which is a degree in engineering or computer science followed up with an MBA.

(although a masters may soon be in my future)

Eh, I'm going for a master's, but not sure in what yet. IU's Kelly School of Business is considered fairly decent, I might go back and earn and MBA from there, but for anything I'd be interested in requires at least a couple of years working in somewhere at least somewhat related to my degree before being admitted into the school. Or so I've read anywho. But nah, I'm going to graduate first then assess how I feel at the time.

I actually choked a little bit on my coffee when I read that. We had level 3 Mandarin offered during this last session at school. I would have taken except for me it's fun enough taking language classes during the regular semester. And I know the instructor and she's a bit wound up during her teaching times. Nah, no fun having an overly energetic Chinese teacher.

Good luck with that class! Classes like those make me glad I am done with college

Thank you! I need it. Not long after making that post I received an e-mail from the Chair of the Chemistry department sent out to all Chemistry students. They had to make a sudden change to the schedule (very sudden since class starts tomorrow) and change one of the Chemistry department classes. Any fees with late registering or any trouble due to conflicting will be waived, but since I was never registered for that class I do not qualify. It does however make it possible for me to take that class and save a whole damn semester! But, since the way the summer semesters are organized if I withdraw from the Physics class I only get back 2/3rd of the money. So now I will be taking two classes….two really hard classes. 8 to 12, straight, no break…5 days a week. Tuff damn classes.

If for the next 5 weeks I call all of you assholes and hope you all die miserable horrible deaths, and your families too….you now know why. Please forgive me.

Do not one or two people on this board completely love that movie?

Yes I do.

Now tell me this after seeing the movie. If you took that group of 12 Vikings and put them against a Predator (ala Predator 1) in a forest area….could that not be the best damn possible Predator movie?

I rented it on DVD - it was a worthwhile watch, but nothing spectacular.
Bit of a silly story, a bit melodramatic, some actors were meh.

Am I the only one that notices but when you replay to the post with the current subject (with the error) that in the text field FireFox replaces the dashed made arrow with an actual solid arrow?

Just thought that was neat, had not noticed that before about FF.

I was thinking that as I did it. I said to myself - hay that is cool - lets see what happens. blah, stupid internets - looked better when I typed it.

Good luck with that class! Classes like those make me glad I am done with college (although a masters may soon be in my future) I promised the lady I would take off at least 6 months until I jump into another program.

So you guys are going to move soon?

Hope to. All depends on how quickly we can sell this house.

Just to a new/bigger/better house or is it location location location?

Yes.

We'd like a slightly larger house (3/2 right now, want at least a 4/2.5), with a better yard and neighborhood, and the areas we're looking in also have slightly better schools and lower taxes.

But we expect to move <5 miles, and this house has gone way up in value since I purchased it in 1999. So we'll actually end up buying a bigger house for about the same amount this one should sell for.

It took us a month to unpack and paint and now my wife has me testing color and texture samples for the bathroom and kitchen. it seems as if the ever expanding list of improvements will never end. But i'm loving every minute of it.
hehe. Once they've had you redo every room in the house, it's time to start over with the first one. On the other hand; learning how to tile, lay laminate, hang doors, build shelves and do some basic plumbing will earn you beers - as you help your less handy friends do things in their houses at the behest of their spouses.

My wife and son and I just moved into our very first house a month ago and i'm experiencing exactly the same thing you are. It seems as if there are about 8 hours less a day than there were in the apt. Keeping the yard up - we just laid down sod across a 1/3 of our backyard, so i'm breaking water ban rules right now watering twice a day.

It took us a month to unpack and paint and now my wife has me testing color and texture samples for the bathroom and kitchen. it seems as if the ever expanding list of improvements will never end. But i'm loving every minute of it.

Until the release of Titan Quest, we'd all but given up on gaming as it's in that summer lull for gaming. I'm thinking that getting older has modified my taste in games as i'm not so easily swayed towards anything that hits the shelves.

i feel your pain/joy Bat. Right there with ya brother.

Pulling out for Arizona in the morning. I would take a second session of summer classes, but right now I need to go visit my homestate for a week or so.

I would prefer to not go and have a break. I have been in school the past 4 years straight, full summer load every time.

The only damn problem is the idiots in charge of my major. I literally have three classes in my major to go…they are not even hard classes either…I could do them all in one semester. It will however take me until Spring of 08’ to actually graduate. One next semester, one Fall 07’, then I have to wait until Spring of 08’ for the last one to be offered. It pisses me off so much…and also the times they are all offered has ALWAYS conflicted with other classes required for the degree outside the Chemistry department. ALWAYS. In fact, in 4 years of doing 2-4 classes a summer only ONE has been chemistry, if that tells you how much the freakin’ conflict….I can only do them then and not in the normal semesters (these are like math and physics type classes).

What pisses me off even more is I tested out of all but two state core classes so I thought I would be done with college in record time. Of the 47 required hours of core I skipped 41.

Just so pissed.
