Gothic III Drops StarForce

The JoWooD Forums (thanks Worthplaying) have word (in German) that the controversial (story) StarForce copy protection scheme will be dropped from Gothic III. According to the post, the RPG sequel will have a protection scheme that will be more "gentle" (translated) to the end user.

In my book, if you LINK a warez site, and in particular a torrent for one game, and post that on your OWN forum, you are MOST FUCKING CERTAINLY encouraging people to download it.

Exactly...

Slight correction (despite the fact that I love seeing Starforce tarred and feathered), the didn't encourage warezing of GalCiv II, they posted a link to a place where you could download GalCiv II as a way of showing how an unprotected game could be distributed so easily.

Of course, any publicity is ... bad?

In case of Starforce, I think that little stunt really hurt them, yes. It wasn't long after that that Ubi dropped Starforce, and they were SF's biggest customer. Now others are beginning to drop it (HoMM5, Gothic3), I'd say that SF's remaining days are finite.

I'm personally overjoyed to see Gothic III SF free. It's a game with a great heritage and it doesn't deserve to be ruined by a two bit copy protection. I have no problem with people protecting their software, but I draw the line at software that penalises legitimate, honest customers in an attempt to slow piracy. Particularly when the pirates can come up with circumventions that not only invalidate the copy protection but usually stop it from borking your system. eg. Securerom 7's blacklisting of emulation apps can be circumvented easily using customised tools designed to foil the protection.

I think Aegia's next product is going to be a StarForce add-on card. It only comes in ISA, costs $599 and is going to be part of the minimum requirements for Windows Vista.

EDIT: And every six months, it demands you renew its subscription or it detonates an attached water capsule inside your PC.

LOL. You are a sick, sick man, Parallax!

Though I will admit that I have had no discernible problems when I had Starforce on my machine, after their recent bullshit practices (Such as encouring people to pirate GalCiv2), I will never ever again purchase a game with that piece of shit software on it, no matter how good the game in question.

Starforce is slowly but surely going down the shitter. The world has become a better place.

Anybody clue me in on what I was doing wrong, I mean any fight was like a deathwish. I couldn't make money or get anything, and these are like my kind of games.

Erm, the combat really wasn't all that complicated. When fighting humans, block when they attack, then hit them while they recover. For monsters, hop backwards when they attack, hit them, hop backwards, hit them again, rinse and repeat. Combos are unblockable, as are some monster attacks, but the likelihood of you encountering either of these at the beginning of the game is low.

Now, the combat in Gothic 1 was a whee bit more complex. You had to hold the attack button, then press an arrow key in the direction you want to swing your weapon. In G2, all you have to do is click.

@Pr()ZaC: An official patch? Or a somewhat dodgier "patch"?

It would be nice if the distributers/developers realise what a POS that Starforce is ... I had to remove it (and hence City Life as well) off my PC because my DVD Burner no longer worked. It's a shame, because it's a cool game ....

Midway games had SF before Rise & Fall. I'm pretty sure it was in The Suffering: Ties That Bind.

Now if only Nadeo would drop Starforce for Trackmania.

Way to go, good decision JoWooD!!! I have passed up many games that have StarForce that I really wanted, here is one that I want and will buy now that Starforce isn't included.

I waited for Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War because I love Stainless steels way of making RTS games, but Midway decided for the first time ever to put SF in that game so they lost my business along with many other friends who were also awaiting the game.

Actually, Midway was slapping Starforce onto their PC games long before Rise & Fall. I believe the first game was a Midway Classics compilation or something.
