Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Preorder Plans

There's a new Enemy Territory: Quake Wars screenshot on IGN (thanks Frans), showing off Splash Damage's upcoming first-person shooter. The shot is accompanied by preliminary preorder details, saying that a preorder program will come in the end of July, with those who participate to receive the opportunity to register their usernames in advance along with some strategy tips.

Well, I guess we all learned that Riley will never have a myspace account.

I've only seen this kind of paranoia once - one of my current roommates. He used to refuse to go out to bars because he'd be afraid the character and fitness board of the bar association would see and/or hear about him being drunk out of his home. He turns his computer off if he steps away from it for even a few minutes because he's afraid someone will hack into his stuff. He shreds any piece of paper with his name on it. He googles himself daily and then sends an email to any site that has mention of him and asks for it to be removed.

Half of these things are insignificant, half of them are simply irrational.
Like Riley.

I heard ET:QW will not let you play until you submit a urine sample so that the evil marketers can determine our diet and which brands should have special ET:QW editions.

Actually, you've gotten it wrong, it was a sperm sample. The players with the best stats will have their sperm [or eggs] used to help create a superior human race for future military personnel...DoD's funding the project. Hey...they need good pilots for the Predators...good hand-eye coordination.

IT COULD HAPPEN.

(just as soon as assley stops grandstanding over everything. Maybe it won't happen then.)

to find another game Riley won't be playing.
I don't yet know if I will be playing it or not. It's going to depend on how the persistent stats and character features are implemented.

Microsoft could get me fired from my job because it looks like I'm incompetent
You being incompetent is certainly easy to believe. The notion that your employer could discover how many hours you have been "wasting" playing video games (even if it is not done on company time) from publicly posted stats and that it could negatively impact your career is also not far-fetched. Video games are still perceived as children's toys or frivolous entertainment to a lot of people especially older ones who also tend to hold senior positions in the business world.

Ah... away for a few days and I return (actually, I don't - not for another couple of days) to find another game Riley won't be playing. Very much looking forward to this one, but I think it will require an upgrade.

You know, I don't play FreeCell anymore because it tracks my statistics. Who knows what nefarious things Microsoft can do with my win/loss record? For example, with my 1 win and 999 losses Microsoft could get me fired from my job because it looks like I'm incompetent. They could post the information online and cause me great emotional stress from all the people mocking me. I think Riley has done me a great service. Fight The Man! Power To The People!

A thread about ET:QW and we have Riley bitching about HL2... what a fucking surprise.
Beamer brought it up so I responded to his post.

You obviously have a clear dislike for all modern computer games
You obviously only read the critical comments in my posts or think that Half-Life 2 is the only computer game.

Valve uses Steam and the voluntary survey to monitor system specs so that they can cater the game to the average system
That is not analogous to what I am complaining about.

A thread about ET:QW and we have Riley bitching about HL2... what a fucking surprise. You obviously have a clear dislike for all modern computer games so why do you even bother to hang around Bluesnews? If a game can monitor usage stats and use that to improve the game then that's fine by me... that way the game is catered to the users. Valve uses Steam and the voluntary survey to monitor system specs so that they can cater the game to the average system - that's why HL2 runs a lot smoother on current gen specs that most other games that have no point of reference. I have no doubt you'll turn that around as proof of Valve trying to destroy the gaming industry as we know it.

NEway, I'm not going to fuel your Valve bashing. I have no interest in your opinion regarding computer games, the internet, reproduction or anything else you care to spew your filth over. Incessant negativity and paranoia are not qualities that I value.

As for ET:QW... it looks alright but the videos I saw were unimpressive and the animations were very poor. Gameplay looked good and the graphics don't look hugely demanding, as I was fearing a super-computer would be needed. Pre-ordering is not my top concern, as I'd rather wait to hear people's response to the game than buy a game based upon hype - I think it will be a decent game but am not willing to risk money on that prediction.

The game looks great, and I'm definitely going to buy it. But when you watch the videos, it reminds me a lot of Battlefield

The UI in Quake Wars looks a lot cleaner. Simple and clean. Plus we can all hope that the netcode and multiplayer apsects of the game will be far smoother and less bug laden as BF2. Game looks really good. But as a typical Tribes fan I have to ask, Can I climb up and over that hill next to the water tank? Can my team of buddies Flank the enemy from the mountain hillside afar or will we be held back by invisible hard boundries? Hmmm. We'll see.

Only this and Crysis actually look appealing thus far.

My point is that there is no need for mandatory player accounts or tracking with this type of game. I hope it's optional at most, but I certainly don't trust Activision or any other company to do just what's least intrusive or inconvenient to the customer because they usually don't.

I would really like to know what you think they would do with this information. Please enlighten us with what threats we will face upon release of a game with mandatory player accounts. Sure they get my fake e-mail and my IP, but to link it to me they need more info from my ISP which they wont get without going through the proper authorities, slim chance that will happen. Even if they do get all my info I'm just not paranoid and disillusional enough to really care, I guess thats the difference between us. It's still only a game company.

I'm still waiting for him to start bitching about how you can pick up objects in Oblivion but never see your hands
I don't have that game and have no intention of getting it. I can find other ways to be nickeled-and-dimed to death. If Obvlivion doesn't have first-person models to pickup objects that are not supposed to be magically levitated, then yes it deserves the same criticism if it too was in development as long as Half-Life 2 by a developer as wealthy as Valve.

But Riley doesn't like niggling little facts that contradict his wild fantasies.
And what "wild fantasies" are those moron? Your posts in this thread clearly show that you just jump on the "hate Riley" bandwagon without actually reading (or at least comprehending) what I write. That must be Zathrus for you.

Even if he never played BF2 it wouldn't be difficult to do some research on its user and stats system once people brought them up
BF2's stats system is irrelevant to the discussion because not only is this game not BF2, it's not even from the same developer or publisher.

I don't know what type of player accounts Quake Wars will require or optionally use or what those accounts will track. That's why I asked the question. Since you idiots questioned my reasons for asking, I laid out the potential scenarios. There's no wild fantasies about it. Quake Wars could use anything from an optional, purely game stats system like UT2004's to something much more restrictive which ties each purchased copy of the game to a single player account which is also used to build the player's character and abilities in the game like many MMO games. I want to know exactly what it will be because I am interested in this game, but I won't buy it if it is the latter case or something similar.

But speaking of assumptions, is it safe to assume now that ET:QW is the next game where Riley jumps into every thread about it, trying to find a reason to ruin it for all the others?
That's going to depend on whether Quake Wars requires Steam.
