Prey Demo Next Week

GameSpot announces they will be premiering the demo for Prey on Wednesday June 21 at 9:00 pm Pacific time, which translates to the stroke of midnight Thursday for those of us on the U.S. east coast. Word is the sample of Human Head's DOOM 3-engine first-person shooter will offer one hour of gameplay and will include two multiplayer maps in addition to single-player mode. Further:
Defy the law of nature with gravity flipping, a feature that allows you to walk on ceilings and turns deathmatch mode upside-down. Explore unreachable areas with wall walking, and transport from one sphere to another through space-bending portals. With all these unique gameplay elements, you don't want to miss this highly anticipated FPS demo!

Now that I'm digging myself out of a nasty server crash at the absolute worst time possible, and transferring life over. Most of the comments I have seen have been about the UI, so I figured I would stop in and talk about that and a couple little items...

First... A Picture says a thousand words, so here are a couple Gs.

http://64.31.138.98/UI_1.jpg
http://64.31.138.98/UI_2.jpg

The MCE interface is more designed for the 10 foot experience, and really isnt as advanced per say as the FPS gamer looks for. However, Multitasking while in and out of gameplay, Queueing, throttling, DX/OGL notification of streaming, Offline mode, Desktop icon play for games, hot weblinking, and a few more things I'll keep to my vest for now. These are only 2 of the screens, and there are quite a few more (In game descrip, shots, video and more)

Oh, and this UI... It is 100% unicode, and can be skinned by anyone with a notepad and some jpegs or PNGs.

As for Prey, bandwidth, and the release. We have 32GBit of bandwidth for streamers, and 48 Tera CDN assist for preload and launch worldwide. So when release day comes, for those that have preloaded. Your playtime will really depend on how fast your hard drive is, not your internet connect.

Back to work for me.

I don't think PlayTriton can be as bad as Steam. I've nothing against a one time only 5 second connection to validate my install key. Anything more than that and I'm going to get annoyed.
The problems with any activation system are how often do you have to re-activate, how often can you re-activate before you must purchase the game all over again, how reliable is the activation system (can you activate when you need to), and what is the failover system, i.e. if the activation servers disappear or aren't available, can you still play the game.

I seriously doubt that Triton will be any less restrictive and more flexible for the user than Steam or any of the other crappy online activation systems for other software. This is also one more nail in the coffin of the used/resale game market.

All whose bashing the Doom3 engine must be forgetting Quake4, it's much brighter, more open and improved net code.
Of course ET:QuakeWars looks set to beat all of them. The screenshots and movies look a lot better than the Source engine.
I'm really looking forward to this demo.

Obviously you've not seen the vids, portals you can shoot through, portals that move about...

So the game has been in development for how many years now? and the new "thing" they've added to fps is walking on walls and ceilings?

I still think it's going to be a good game though, I'm definitly going to play it.

Here's some words of wisdom hubris from Joe Siegler of 3DRealms on Prey's online activation:

As Scott pointed out, what we're doing will probably lose us some customers - we know that. But not any serious amount that will impact the overall sales of the title. Scott also has info which shows that we're likely to gain more customers than we'd lose, anyway.

Well that kills the resale market for this game. Welcome to the next Steam.

No one is harder on games than I am but I have to say Rune was a good game both sp and mp.

I've only seen the video's on Prey so will have to reserve judgement till I play the demo, but I'm glad to see games going in new directions if you'll pardon the expression. Ironic that it will use the D3 engine which had NO new directions, not to beat that horse again.

Point is, let's see more games with imagination. This is make believe dammit. We want to do things we can't do in real life like fly, turn into a creature with superhuman abilities, use dimensional portals, bullet time, and hey walking on walls sounds neat also.

We already know what it's like to walk down a corridor.

Prey will use a similar program like steam for online activation called "triton". http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=17871&page=3

On Steam that hour of gameplay would cost $5 $9.95 (since nothing sells for less).

this is good news. considering the logic behind a demo/sample before release. that being the confidence the developers/publishers must have behind the game to allow the public to play a small portion of it for free.

its just common sense, however its not law. there are great games that never have demos or release then demo later. and of course theres the opposite where you wonder why anyone would release a demo of a crappy game becuase its so bad that you know 100% that whoever plays the demo will not buy the game.

in any case, im excited. its also a great way to figure out where your computer stands as far as performance goes... gives you some time to collect enough cash for whatever needed upgrades in time for final release.

Sweet, that is a huge demo, two or three levels it sounds like. Reminds me of the sharware days. They are showing alot of confidence in the game, hopefully its that good.

I have to laugh at this staetment though ...

Portal technology adds a new dimension to gameplay, allowing enemies to appear out of thin air and create new and completely original puzzles and gameplay styles

Heh doesnt every single FPS ever made spawn enemys out of thin air Even the ones without some gimmick do it.

its too bad this wont have destructible geometry - which they were proposing back in '96

hell i remember looking at prey screenshots on the DN3D disc... seems like 10 years is quite a dev cycle - so yeh, this game better be worth something

I'm looking forward to this... I think I stand a better chance of running this well than Crysis. Prey looks to feature lots of original gameplay elements, combined into an above average shooter - I don't expect it to blow me away but I am expecting it to be one of the better games of the year. I am interested in how the multiplayer side of things will pan out as it could certainly be exciting if it's not too super-speed Quake style.

there will be a ton of gaming purists that will call the game crap simply because it uses the Doom3 engine.

Considering the massive misinformation flying around about Doom3's renderer and netcode, they'll be calling it crap because they're stuck judging a 2 year old engine.

To compare the timeframe, if this were the Quake3 engine, we'd be hitting MoH:AA soon. Yet in 2002, people weren't doubting Q3's engine to do anything besides curves and arena-sized rooms.

Well maybe they were, but they certainly weren't AS obnoxious.
