New Oblivion Dungeon

The Elder Scrolls Store (thanks Thomas) now offers the promised new dungeon quest for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. In the old days they'd give away the razor to sell the blades, but in this case you'll have to pony up $2.99 for Mehrunes' Razor. Word is: "Conquer one of the deepest and most challenging dungeons in all of Cyrodiil to claim this fearsome weapon."

Puts the "meh" in Mehrune if you ask me.

Now if you could use Mehrune's Razor to shave off that ridiculous five-o'clock shadow everyone sports when you turn on self shadows, they might have a deal

But then again that might be considered a patch..

Whoo-hoo! $3 for a weapon!

I don't fucking think so...

I take back my comment of a few weeks ago - Bethesda went from industry darling to industry whore FAR faster than Bungie did. We're talking weeks in Beth's case.

Kudos, fuckers! I'll remember all this the next time you ship a game.

On one hand, it's nice to see them be so quick to add content (amazing what a little cash incentive will do). On the other hand, I can this going to where you can spend $30 on a complete "set" of equipment for your character. All this for a single player game. Maybe it's a really big dungeon....

I think I'll wait 3 months for Neverwinter Nights 2. Sure the graphics aren't quite as good, but the game isn't done and we haven't seen screens with stuff like HDR or the full dynamic lighting, alpha blending (though not as good as Oblivions), paralax mapping etc that are supposed to be in game.

However, NWN2 promices to have quite a long single player story, one that is infinately more interesting, not to mention cohesive, then Oblivions. On top of that we get a free toolset that lets us make hundreds of thousands of things that Oblivion can never have with it's toolset.

Not to mention, with NWN1 to this day they release a tun of FREE stuff to the community. They do have 'pay-to-download' things like Oblivion, but they are generally tuns and tuns of new content, new monsters, new tilesets, and 10+ hour new adventures. I'm sure NWN2 will follow in Biowares footsteps.

You folks who think this isn't all that bad a situation, you do realize that Bethesta did the same thing in previous games.. only it was all FREE.

We have some games (mostly consoles) comming out that have content, weapons, armors, extra bonuses, etc that will be available to pay and download online, at the SAME TIME the game comes out. So it isn't extra stuff they are making, it's stuff already in the game and taken out to make an extra buck. I mean I kinda feel for consolers, they pay $10-15 more per game alone, and now to get a full game their gonna have to buy extra crap!

I refuse to pay for this garbage. Already the community has pumped out a TUN of extra quests, dungeons, areas, castles, even entire towns.. for free. Bethesta can take their crap and shove it.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of the micropayments thing myself (at least as implemented here), but acting like you're -just- getting the weapon for $3 is a bit disingenuous. In reality, you're getting all of the dungeon and quest content associated with it, as well. Whether or not that's worth $3, well...that's another question entirely.

However, this is not -exactly- another "Horse armor" scenario.

Dude, the center piece is the item. That's what the quest or the raid is for, to get the weapon. So, really, paying $3 for a sword still isn't in the cards for me.

Anyone tried it? I'm wondering how long it is, and whether it's the same old textures/mobs. Not that I will buy it or their next game. Just curious.

Bethesda gets free marketing on all major sites when it releases these packs. It also gets press for the controversy of the scheme. Furthermore, there is the $$$ generated from the sales of the packs.

I think they can probably live with a few angry posts. I personally think these packs are very, very lame.

for one, the dungeons and random quests are about the lamest part of Oblivion IMO, so I'm not exactly thrilled to spend 3 bucks on yet another lame-ass boring dungeon crawl

also, the weapon is a TES classic, and according to the fan mods that already added Mehrune's Razor somehow the mesh has been in game since launch, which means they always planned to add this sometime down the road, maybe not "horse armor" scenario, but sure as hell an "orrery" scenario aka. "we suspended development of certain features to add them at a later date for cash"

Um, so by that logic you've already paid $40 for a mediocre set of armor? How's that working out for you?

The content of the game is in the quests and areas. Items are just rewards, nothing more. This module is no different.

What, you only own one set of armor in the game? Ask Creston how many sets of armor he has.

From what I've heard, though, this isn't really a quest, it's a dungeon. The quest is to GET the item, is it not?

And the dungeon is just one each of the three dungeon types (Elfen ruin, Cave, Fort) stacked on top of each other, or so somebody here posted. I could just as well open up my map and fasttravel to three random dungeons for the exact same effect.

As much as I seemed to enjoy the 75 or so hours I plugged into the game my first time through, it will take a *lot* more than any of these modules, combined or otherwise, to draw me back to the game.

No sale.

I can't bring myself to play the game again. It was a good experience, but after 100 hours and nearly everything of note from vanilla Oblivion (+ some unofficial mod quests + some official mod quests, which were a complete waste of money!), none of this added content interests me at all. If they develop an expansion with a new region, with new landscape/architectural styles, I may buy it.

If that's true, then it is disappointing and is basically milking existing dungeon levels for $. Come on guys, people are paying for it so there's no excuse to skimp on development for this "new" professionally created content that you said you couldn't afford to create for free. This also supports Mr. Lolicon's point.

I think I'll pass on this one for now. I don't see the need for a weapon like this while I can build my own and just copy grand soul gems all day and recharge it... (It's not one hit but it gets the job done)

I'm also thinking that unless their content add on's get more substantial, like new sets of armor, or new weapon effects, new spells, new houses, new furniture, etc, I'll probably be passing on these from now on.

In the beginning it was cool they offered something to add to the game but atm the game is feeling a little stale and I'd like to see something that enhances it to the point where it makes me want to spend hours in it again.

I'm ready for some guild quests now, add more to the game, like another set of missions for hte dark brotherhood, or missions for the blackwood company. Something along those lines.

Well by now everyone can see the Bethesda strategy. Generally ignore the problems that people are having with the game and sell 3 dollar content that a member of the community could create for free. I wish they focused on tieing up the technical loose ends and bugs that are still present rather than trip all over themselves with micro transactions.

Anyway, the more you play Oblivion the more you see how disjointed it is. It just gets boring to play after a while, you see one dungeon, one fort, one cave, you've seen them all. That's the feeling I get.
