Blizzard Denies MMO Rumors

The WoW Forums (thanks Worthplaying) offer a couple of responses from Blizzard to rumors that their future development plans are focused solely on MMOGs (story), unequivocally denying that this is the case. Here is one of the posts from Blizzard on the topic:
Nothing in that rumor is true in regards to Blizzard. If I had to guess, there was some confusion between what Vivendi has planned for its its game division versus what Blizzard has planned. While Blizzard is owned by Vivendi, their game division operates seperately from Blizzard.

If Vanguard is even half as good as it sounds it's going to rock out with its cock out.
I have a friend who is an impulsive MMO player. He gobbled up WoW when it came out, and told me I needed to play it. By the time I got broadband, he had gotten bored with the game. Then Guild Wars came out, and he told me it was much better than WoW. After a while, he decided it sucked and went back to WoW. Now he's saying Dungeons and Dragons Online is better, and I need to play it. However, I'm sure in a few weeks he'll hate that game and say some new MMO is the "best game ever." I've stuck with WoW all that time (off and on), and I still haven't seen a MMO that came close to touching it in terms of accessability/entertainment value. I'm sure Vanguard will be no different. I don't have time to play for hours every day, and a lot of the other MMOs don't appeal to the casual gamer like WoW. Of course, hardcore players have an advantage, but I think that's true of any game.

I remember when Guild Wars came out a lot of people said it was the best online game ever, but I didn't see what was so great about it. I tried really hard to like Galaxies, Guild Wars, and EVE, but to no avail. Each game had a few aspects I liked (although with Guild Wars, it was pretty much limited to the "Muppets Swedish Chef" language choice in the menu), but many more that I hated. I guess appealing to the lowest common denominator really does pay off.

releasing a game, or even releasing *news* of a game other than WoW would quickly dispel such rumors.
Exactly... until then all the WoW fans will constantly praise Blizzard, whilst all the others will criticise them for milking the subscription model. It's a shame the Blizzard fanbois get on my tits so much, as it just pushes me to dislike Blizzard games and rebel against their fans. *shrugs*

I couldn't care less about Starcraft or Diablo 3, however I would love a new Warcraft game in the vein of the original - I though WC2 and WC3 were both pretty 'naff and lost all the character.

That's the attitude that EA took with UO. Look where they are now. (considered a joke by serious gamers).

True, yet UO didn't have even a tenth of the subscribers that WoW has.

And besides, UO is still running, isn't it? It's still making money, it's still got several hundred thousand people paying 10 bucks every month for it. I'd hardly call it a failure.

Why make another game, and then have your WoW players go play that, rather than sink more money into WoW?

Because they could make even more money from people like me who don't give a shit about WoW...? I'm sure Blizzard could wipe their asses on a CD and call it Starcraft 2 and still make a billion dollars.

that the guy says that that they aren't developing MMOGs. He never states, however, that they are developing ANYTHING at all, beyond the WoW expansion.

Why would they? WoW bring in a hojillion dollars a month. Blizzard really has no intention to do anything else. Why make another game, and then have your WoW players go play that, rather than sink more money into WoW?

I think that Blizzard would be crazy not to keep making games ... even if it to keep the punters keen to get "the next new Blizzard game". There are plenty of Blizzard fanbois out there that will gladly lap it up.

Okay, you could argue that those players would still pay their monthly fees, but it sure looks to me like Blizzard doesn't want to do anything to this absurd goldmine they've got going. It's got a million orc peons running to and fro their HQ with bags of gold.

I'm firmly convinced Blizzard has made its last game. Although they will continue to expand WoW, and eventually will make a sequel / new version of it. If they WERE planning on doing a new Starcraft, they'd have fucking done so by now. Even 3dRealms isn't this pathetically slow.

I realise I could be wrong about Blizzard's new games, but I doubt it. When was the last time they released a non MMORPG game? 2000?

Funny ... word on the "rumor mill" this that that there is an influential and vocal group of Vanguard beta testers that are completely bagging out any features in the game that even vaguely resembles WoW. The really sad thing is they have been harrassing other beta testers that disagree with them to the point that many people have pulled out. This added to the fact that this group seems to have a degree of "pull" with the developers, it makes me wonder if it's doomed before it even starts. Lets face it .... WoW is pretty successful. If the beta testers end up predominately WoW-haters, then what's Vanguard likely to end up as?

I think Diablo 3 should be done like Guild Wars, and they could make it direct competition for Guild Wars, and just release a new expansion every year or so at 50 dollars.

OMFG...talk about crack in a box.

Shit...keep your voice down, man. I don't even want to ponder what you just outlined.

I just hope Diablo 3 isn't pay per month. That would piss me off... because one of the big draws was the free online battle.net play.

I think Diablo 3 should be done like Guild Wars, and they could make it direct competition for Guild Wars, and just release a new expansion every year or so at 50 dollars.

Haven't people been making "doomsday" predictions about Blizzard going MMO-only ever since WoW came out? I don't even pay attention anymore. It was BS then, and it's BS now.

Oh, and it's pretty cool to see the first two posts quoting Family Guy and Futurama, respectively. Although the Futurama quote should have come first.

In about 2 or 3 weeks we'll all look back at this and laugh.

Some will laugh that this 'rediculous' notion ever came to light.

Others may be laughing at how insubstantial and meaningless 'official denials' can be.

I can't wait to see which one it is
