Ok, and since B5 didn't make any of these critical errors (and even got the physics of spaceflight right, at least for the early human vessels)... what's your point?

Well, they did have spaceships…which was one of his ‘critical errors’.

But he is an [E]diot! Sci-Fi can be great!

I mean, clearly Ray is delusional, but we've known that for awhile!

Clearly. It disgusts me we share the same birthday!

It's also amazing to me that people would rationalize this type of insurance fraud as something that's OK to do.

Yeah, that surprised me, too. I think I'd rather take the credit hit than go to jail...but hey, it's their choice!

The 4400 also has its season premier tonight on USA. I hadn't heard of this show until a week ago when the Sci-Fi channel ran two nights of 4 episodes each from the last season. I'll catch Deadwood via On-Demand, courtesy of Time Warner Cable, tomorrow.

It's a decent show, the first season was essentially a mini series and the second season was pretty good.

I have some reservations about some of the things they did this premiere though.

Getting rid of Lilly was just sad because she was an important character both seasons.

The word on the street is they also got rid of Kyle, who was another MAJOR player during the first two seasons. Granted, the finale had him turning himself in for murder but his "victim" is now alive and well, not to mention he was not in control of his actions during the time. So it seemed like an obvious choice to bring him back: no harm done.

Oh well.

At least B-52s are simple. Their design and their intentions, no mistake about implements of war. No confusion about something designed to carry bombs, although it is kind of amazing that it will still be in service 100 years after it first flew.

No, what sucks is when money influences things in other ways that end up reaming us later on. How the hell did we ever thought that feeding cows other cows was a good idea? Or pumping them full of antibiotics, no matter the increases in yield. At this rate we're going to be vegetarians living in sheltered societies that keep devastating epidemics isolated to one area.

And people wonder why I play so damn many games...time for more Lock On.

Never watched Deadwood, but after reading the article linked above, I may check it out tonight...

While I realize that my reply is too late, I would instead recommend renting the first season's DVDs. You'll probably still enjoy tonight's episode, but like any good character based drama, the characters and what they're talking about will be much richer if you experience what got them to where they're at from the beginning. You could easily watch the first two seasons on DVD before they start rerunning this season.

That article was amazing nin, especially the part where back in '84 this type of thing was somewhat commonplace.

It's also amazing to me that people would rationalize this type of insurance fraud as something that's OK to do. These same people would never rob a bank or something like that .......

I counter with the following:

DS9 > B5

DS9 = Best Star Trek ever evAr

That aside, too bad for Deadwood and its whacked out creator. I hope this year will have a good arc and that the specials help end it well.
$5M seems is not obnoxiously high. Needs a bigger market, though.

I heard from somebody that it costs $5,000,000 to produce one episode of Deadwood.

That is not tremendously high for an hour long show.

Ok, in reality it is. But that is because lots of different people are pocketing lots and lots of money. But relative to other shows production cost it is not out way out of league. It is a little high for the average, but not unheard of.

The amount of money it takes to do anything in ‘Hollywood’ is stupid though, so much back alley stuff going on.

The amazing thing is though, if you compare the production cost of other shows to say an amazing and well done show like Babylon 5. The budget for an average cost of one episode of Babylon 5 was $800,000. And 70% of that went to special effects. Where as during the same time period a show like Star Trek:DS9 had a production budget of $1,600,000. Twice the amount of money per show and less then half the special effects over all. There where some episodes of DS9 heavy on the effects, but by and large way fewer then B5 over the entire series.

So what did we learn from all of this? When a few key people are passionate about a show, they ca do an amazing show with top quality production for dirt cheap (by not taking lots of money…some could say illegally). But that for most shows there are a good bit of people making lots of money for doing nothing, except increasing the production cost.

And btw what that person told you was true, at least according to a bunch of different news articles I read.

It also makes me admire everybody that brought a show like B5 together.

It sucks anytime a well liked show goes out, but I think it's better to go out on top, than to be dragged through 2-3 additional seasons that are shit (Mr. Carter, I'm talking about your shitty X-Files, and you pretending that the last 3-4 seasons were just as good as the originals.).
