BF2142 Demo & Beta Plans

Community site BF2142.Com reports receiving word from DICE on plans for beta testing of Battlefield 2142 in August and a demo that will likely arrive shortly before the full game:
The demo for BF2 went out about 10 days before launch if I remember correctly, I am sure something similar will be the deal for 2142. We are also going to throw out an open beta in the beginning of August. The beta is predominately to learn about large scale issues, i.e. when we have 10 000’s of people playing at the same time, eliminating some of the problems we have encountered after launch previously in the franchise. Keep your eyes open to join.

Colorado, there are no "hitscans" in this engine, instead each projectile is modelled.

with me, it just isnt the name bug, or the load times or the horrible server browser..
it's also teh mechanics of the game.
even with a truly top of the line system and a sub 80 ping my hitscan seems erratic (when prone firing short bursts), the vehicles damage model seems random, the game feels about 1/2 second behind every action i perform.
i dont feel very connected to the game, sometimes it feels light and unresponsive.

i loaded up Wolf:ET and BF2 in the same day.. BF2 felt "loose" and "erratic".. while ET was 100% accurate.

They have very little incentive to care about the hardcore gamer. Everyone is just a sale, worth the same amount to them.

That's less true than it was, with the "micro-payment" based content model. If I was still playing BF2, I'd probably buy some of these map packs they're selling, but for whatever reason I didn't feel like playing it any more, so I didn't. Thus, lost money for EA.

well as others have pointed out, the software *is* bug free for 99% of users.
I have never played Battlefield 2 so I cannot comment on the state of the game from a first-hand perspective. However, the number of complaints about the game on this forum and others along with the considerable list of bug fixes in the numerous updates to the game certainly indicate that the game is NOT bug free for "99%" or even just the majority of the players.

If Battlefield 2142 comes out a buggy mess, who is to blame? EA? DICE? Or the gamers who put up with this shit?
Corporations know that you guys who play this game are a bunch of gutless, limp wristed, crybabies who'll take whatever bitchslapping they hand out.

Did any of you pissed off Battlefield players who went to E3 bother to GET IN THE FACE of ea/dice reps when you had the opportunity? How come no one staged an ugly embarrassing scene, which would have gotten full E3 press coverage?

Until gamers are willing to take guerrilla-style Direct Action against abusive corporations nothing will change.

I guess there's no wonder anymore. The bugs do not exist.

Major lag in BF2 is caused by it hitting the hard drive for all audio events. Why cant it be loaded into memory ffs or why cant we disable the damn annoying spams and audio anouncements anyway. Lowering the volume and muting doesnt prevent them from loading.

I have a few minor bugs but nothing drastic, and considering Ive got at least 150 hours of fun from a $45 package, I think I'm doing pretty well out of it.

Sorry, you fail. You used hours to measure the value of a game.

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I've had a big problem since day 1, where fairly frequently after hitting the join game button the sound will stutter and the PC locks up long enough for me to lose connection to the server and have to rejoin. This sometimes happens two or three consecutive times, so you can imagine the fun I've had waiting 10-15 minutes to finally be able to play.

1.3 has compounded this extraordinarily. Where I never had it before, now I have HORRENDOUS crash to desktop issues, such that I often have to reload the entire game and map four or five times before I finally get in. I've reinstalled the game countless times from scratch, including the most recent time four days ago (with full patch instead of the incremental) and it's still crashing on me. I suppose it's a blessing, in a bizarre sort of way, because the crashes to desktop have completely obliterated the sound stutter/disconnect problem. Look on the bright side, right?

I've been in touch with EA about this, against my better judgment, and their latest suggestion is to uninstall the game completely and redo it *again*, this time after creating a new administrator account to install it from. Huh?

I can't believe I've had the patience to put up with this shit as long as I have. BF2 is the only game I'm playing now or really have any interest in, so that's probably why.

Incidentally, with all the problems I've been having with BF2 I'm really apathetic about BF2142. Add in that I thought BF:Vietnam was a turd (it's still the only game in my life I've actually thrown in the garbage) and with 2142 experiencing the same abbreviated development cycle... someone else can be the guinea pig this time.

MMORPGs prove that people *will* pay ongoing fees, but there is no granularity. You are either a subscriber or your not, with zero incentive to be a casual *occasional* gamer as Im sure many would like (for a smaller fee).

the red tag bug is relatively innocuous compared to the most recent patch - the 1.3 patch caused most of us daily bf2 addicts to CTD very regularly. i actually downloaded a full patch (half a gig) and reinstalled the whole god damned game. that patch left several lingering bugs, some of which still cause regular crashes! to date there is no rollback or hotfix.
i think a summer intern puts out patches once EA/DICE release a game.
BF2 is a great game inspite of that. look at the number of people who apparently went through the same process i did to make that shitty patch work. (20,805 at the moment, as per gamespy stats).
so DL the 2142 beta, try it and have fun. EA/DICE make great games, even though they simply do not support those games after release. understand what you are getting into, and you will enjoy the game without unrealistic expectations of patching or game stabilization.

To truly realise the income that the game deserves, it should be earning based on how much its played, not how many people shelled out for the box.
That is the purpose of MMO and other subscription games. However, with games like Battlefield where customers host the game at their own expense, publishers sure as hell should not charge for their games based upon usage. In addition, developers and publishers have an obligation to their customers to deliver an error-free product regardless of how much a customer actually uses it. Only in the computer software industry can producers of a product get away with shoddy workmanship.

I like BF2 but never play it anymore because of the loading issues. Takes me like 3 minutes to load a level with punkbuster enabled, and yes I checked, my drives are set up properly and using ultra DMA 5. I have run HD speed test programs and my speed is comparable to other similar drives.

I don't have this problem in other games with punkbuster, but at least it brings me back to the good old Commodore 64 days when loading a game took a while!

its not your fault. its the way game economics work. If you buy BF2 and play it once a month, DICE get their $45 or whatever. If I buy it and play ti every day sicne release (possibly true) they get the same cash.
They have very little incentive to care about the hardcore gamer. Everyone is just a sale, worth the same amount to them.

If the sales model differed, the game was $10 to buy, but cost $0.02c for every game (rough guess) from an online account, then things would be VERY different, and I guess much much better. The problem is, most gamers love to whine, and I'm sure they would whine at the thought of paying based on usage, even though the amount would be tiny.
In theoretical economic terms, the hardcore gamers are a massive inefficiency. To truly realise the income that the game deserves, it should be earning based on how much its played, not how many people shelled out for the box.

Of course there will be bugs in BF2142, every piece of software has bugs, some more than others. Unfortunately the BF-series is not exactly known to have a low amount of bugs, at least not considering the later parts of the series. BF2 is worse out now than it was when it was released.

Hey Sean. Whats with the DICE tag? I thought you're EA executive (unless the recent changes made you switch to dice too).

Are you saying we will see this bug in BF2142 as well?

I don't believe he can reproduce it on command, either. I've had the bug 3 or 4 times ever, and I sure as hell have no idea what caused it. I'm with the bandwagon that thinks it is latency related.
