Ships Ahoy - Half-Life 2: Episode One

Valve announces that Half-Life 2: Episode One is now available via Steam:
Valve Launches First of an Episodic Trilogy

Bellevue, WA, June 1, 2006 - Valve®, developer of the blockbuster series Half-Life® and Counter-Strike™, announced Half-Life® 2: Episode One is now available via Steamgames.com for just $19.95 and at retail outlets around the world.

The first in a trilogy of episodic games, Episode One reveals the aftermath of Half-Life 2 and launches a journey beyond City 17. Episode One does not require Half-Life 2 to play and also includes a first look at Episode Two, which will ship by year's end.

In addition to the new single player experience, two multiplayer games are included. And those who purchase Episode One will have free access via Steam (www.steamgames.com) to Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, the interactive technology demo that introduces High Dynamic Range lighting to the SourceTM Engine, Valve's award-winning game technology.

I so root for 3 hour mini-games reusing all the assets of the previous game while still asking 20$ for it.

Long live Valve for trying to save PC gaming.

Like Sin episodes, I'm going to wait until the whole thing is done and buy them all in a retail box for about 40 bucks.

Still don't understand why people would buy each one individually.

Really. Valve didn't create any new maps or art work? No man hours were put into creating the new content?

That would be asstastic - unless of course you are just talking out of your ass.

I'm glad the original voice cast is returning, and not some fill-ins. In my opinion it really takes away from the continuity and immersion when they get new actors with only a vague semblance of the original. There is no replacement for Robert Guillaume. Benson marathon on TV Land this weekend woohoo! OMG what have we become..

So how is this ?

I for one felt Half-life 2 was a solid shooter with a weak plot. Does this answer anything or is it just mindless gunplay.

I never really bothered to look up the voice actors of HL2, but I just punched in Robert Guillaume's name into IMDB. The guy's damn near 80 years old.

It's good fun. Non-stop action and really good level design. When I'm done I'm going to go through it again with the commentary playing.

Plot-wise it seems a little deeper, too. You don't get a gun until a little later.

Interestingly enough, the advanced video options now recommend nicer settings than before (with an asterisks).

Okay, now that we've had one poster saying he's pirate it and the standard assortment saying they don't support episodic formats, anyone actually play this yet?

I'm waiting to hear how long it takes.
And if it still feels good.
And will probably buy it tomorrow regardless of what people say.

I have played this for about an hour or two now, and so far nothing exciting to report. Which wouldn't be do bad, except that supposedly i'm nearly half way through. I was on the fence about this episodic thing, and now I hate it for sure. This ought to be about $10 for the amount and quality of content thus far.

It ought to be $4.95 and that's all I'd ever pay for it. Thanks, but I'll pass meanwhile. Episodic content is overpriced for suckers.

ive played for about an hour now - im not exactly sure how far in I am thus far; the level design is pretty unique, but so far i have to admit im not totally feeling it; im kinda itchin to do a bit more shooting, and now that ive finally got some weapons, the levels restrict you a bit with alot of dark settings - i havent been really blown away by any of the physics based puzzles - i still have alot left to play though; its showin some promise, but i hope the action heats up a bit

It does answer some stuff, fleshes out the world a bit, but also raises questions that will be answered in later episodes.

It took me just over 4 hours to complete it. I'm now going through again with commentary on, which is interesting enough to make the additional playthrough well worth it.

Wha? Am I suppose to know exactly who this guy is from how long he's acted? Longivity doesn't mean much. Looking through his cast credits, he hasn't starred in anything I'd pay much attention to anyway.
