Ships Ahoy - Half-Life 2: Episode One

Valve announces that Half-Life 2: Episode One is now available via Steam:
Valve Launches First of an Episodic Trilogy

Bellevue, WA, June 1, 2006 - Valve®, developer of the blockbuster series Half-Life® and Counter-Strike™, announced Half-Life® 2: Episode One is now available via Steamgames.com for just $19.95 and at retail outlets around the world.

The first in a trilogy of episodic games, Episode One reveals the aftermath of Half-Life 2 and launches a journey beyond City 17. Episode One does not require Half-Life 2 to play and also includes a first look at Episode Two, which will ship by year's end.

In addition to the new single player experience, two multiplayer games are included. And those who purchase Episode One will have free access via Steam (www.steamgames.com) to Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, the interactive technology demo that introduces High Dynamic Range lighting to the SourceTM Engine, Valve's award-winning game technology.

I've only played maybe halfway through, and I've already encountered two new monsters. Seems someone has trouble counting.I suppose you could consider the Stalker an "old" monster, but seeing as you never got to fight them before, I think they count as new. Sure, it's only about 5 or so of them total, but that's still a monster.

Uh... no... I only remember one new monster, that being the Zombine. And it is really pushing it to even call that a new monster, since it is only a new zombie with a slightly different body... and it runs at you with a bomb and blows up... gee where have I seen that before...

A Stalker? Describe this please. I played through it on hard, and I don't remember any new monster or enemy called a Stalker. And the comment about my counting is a bit cheap, don't you think?

Seeing how most expansion weapons are cheap additions that don't change gameplay at all (ooh look, a double-barreled shotgun!), this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Then again, I probably shouldn't compare to the DOOM3 expansion. They're not exactly in the same class. The new weapons in Opposing Force were cool I guess, but I never really got the impression any of them added a lot to the game.

Oh ok, since most expansions don't have really great additional weapons, therefore they should give up and not put in any new weapons at all.

Why does a new weapon have to "change gameplay?" All it has to do is look cool, sound cool, and be a new toy for me to shoot things with while playing this very brief 20 dollar game. A new pistol like a .50 Deagle or one of the weapons from counter-strike... or a new alien weapon like in HL1... anything just to have something new to play with.

I'm getting really sick of this seemingly prevalent attitude that everything in every game has to be revolutionary and redefine gaming, blah blah blah. Why can't it just be a cool new weapon that is fun to blast shit with?

And I would take a double barreled shotgun or something new over no new weapons at all. At the very least they could give us that sniper rifle that combines use with the blue laser, or that automatic pistol that Alyx uses earlier in the game.

It isn't that damn hard to come up with a couple of new weapons, even if they don't bend the space-time continuum with their incredible design, at least it would make the expansion feel a little more fresh and worthwhile, and not just more recylced HL2 stuff, which is all it is.

I agree that a vehicle level would have been fun, but since a) A lot of people hated the vehicles in HL2, and

Really? I've never heard that before...

b) A vehicle level would have been a decent chunk of the already-low length of time Episode 1 lasts, I can see why they would leave vehicles out. People would have just complained.

Actually I already said that I thought Episode 1 should have been a lot longer for 20 bucks, so the vehicle time should have been added to what is already there, thereby lengthening it.

But you're right... if they did keep it the same length and have the vehicle take part of that time... people would have complained. But people better be complaining because I really think Valve is ripping us off.

Sin Episodes Emergence wasn't stellar, but it was about twice as long, or at least seemed that way to me... in fact I'm going to play it again soon... and I thought it was worth the 20 bux.
