So you think that this author has written everything we are seeing in the games to date and it's all part of a very detailed complicated story?
That's not what Beamer said, though. Valve obviously had a outline for their storyline before they began development, probably even had a full script lying around. Laidlaw's role was to make sure the plot worked and that everything meshed together. Especially for as good as HL was, some material Valve originally had drafted to put in the game probably looked cool on paper, but in practice it just plain didn't work. Writing a story isn't easy. I don't care how much role playing a person's done online, you can't just crap out a storyline and expect it to be of any quality.
Having said that and comparing the storyline's between the two games, it seems Laidlaw was given a lot more creative freedom for HL2's storyline, especially with the rather vague ending. It flows better than the first, I think, but reading some novels he's published in the past, I could pick out some of his distinct touches to the story.
Laidlaw's a strange guy.
