Valve announces that Half-Life 2: Episode One is now available via Steam:
Valve Launches First of an Episodic Trilogy

Bellevue, WA, June 1, 2006 - Valve®, developer of the blockbuster series Half-Life® and Counter-Strike™, announced Half-Life® 2: Episode One is now available via Steamgames.com for just $19.95 and at retail outlets around the world.

The first in a trilogy of episodic games, Episode One reveals the aftermath of Half-Life 2 and launches a journey beyond City 17. Episode One does not require Half-Life 2 to play and also includes a first look at Episode Two, which will ship by year's end.

In addition to the new single player experience, two multiplayer games are included. And those who purchase Episode One will have free access via Steam (www.steamgames.com) to Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, the interactive technology demo that introduces High Dynamic Range lighting to the SourceTM Engine, Valve's award-winning game technology.

$60 for 15 hrs over 1.5 years is much better than $60 over 3 to 5 years for 15 hours (or less) of single player storyline that most FPS games are doing these days.
As usual your reasoning (if it can even be called that) is specious and flawed. First, $60 for 15 hours of content is $60 for 15 hours of content regardles of whether you break it up piecemeal into "episodes" or not. You would still spend the same amount of money and get the same amount of play. Second, $60 for only 15 hours of content is too high a price in my book since I normally get 4, 5, 6 or more games for $60 which is at least four times the value. And it's because I buy games on physical media at retailers and from sellers on ebay competing for my business that I can get such good bargains. Steam and its ilk have not and will not ever offer such values because they lack the economic fundamentals for it to happen. Plus, most games still don't cost $60 even if purchased at their full suggested retail prices on release so $60 for three episodes would still cost more. Third, your notion that the 15 hours of game content would only take 1.5 years to produce if done in piecemeal format versus 3 to 5 years if done and released all at once is ludicrous. The number of hours to produce the content would be the same in either case. As for whether it is better to only be able to play a few hours and then wait six months or so to be able to continue playing more of the game versus being able to play the entire game at once, that is just a personal preference. However, I personally wouldn't want to wait that long to play an entire game. I would rather any breaks I take during play be short and at my own determination not the game developers'.
