one-hit-wonders and these constructed artists, designed to sell might dissappear (like those boybands with selected members etc.)
perhaps more people would cooperate and create better OSS ones [...] perhaps with less.. fluff.. and less sequels..
And you somehow think that this is going to make it easier for bands to noticed? The signal to noise ratio just went through the floor.
The OSS engines are used for how many games? If they're that great, why would a company pay id or Epic such large sums of money to license their engine instead of using the OSS ones? They're simply not on the same level of quality or developer support.
Got you to read it, didn't they?
I do not even know what to say to that kind of spam and how stupid people are
i would imagine simple economics would dictate that. Advertising costs money, beyond word of mouth, replacing your instruments, day to day expenses; all the stuff that goes with running a band.
I was talking about the DVD example he responded to,but it came out wrong
I meant watching a dvd over at a friends house, without any wierd gay-related activities or fetishes of any kind, NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat(tm).
So if I watch it at my friends house with him, its piracy then?
if they fail to break through, is it because they dont have a big corporation/money backing them, or is it because they are fighting against hundreds of other artists that do?
There are also opensource engines out there, id software even releases their sources
besides there are other ways of securing income, like subscriptions, donations or marketing
I don't imagine they make professional game engines in their full time. If that engine hadn't come out, would the mod exist?
Try seeing it the other way around. WHY do bands today need to "sell out"?
If you enjoy watching your friend read a book* then you need help and should legally be allowed to pirate anything to try and get a life!
*Unless you friend is a hot chick and it is a book that will make her touch herself.
It's the old book analogy -- if you have the book, he can't read it at the same time. If he photocopies the book, then that's no longer true.
With digital media, the cost of that photocopy is approximitely nothing.

Anyway, has anyone seen those Miller Man Law commercials? Fucking funny.

That's more a matter of choice than most people give credit. If your band decides not "to sell out" to the big corps and be successful on the local circuit, they have every right to do so. But if they want to get their music out to a wider audience, there's the route you have to take for that, too. You don't have to, but it's nice to have that backing.
While its true they had the engine, its also a fact that they made the mod in their spare time..
Also, alot of bands have built their reputation not on deals with sony or whatever, but on playing concerts, word of mouth and infact pirating, such as all the kids copying of metallica or maiden cassettes back in the day.
