Battlefield 2 Plans

The Battlefield 2 Website (thanks Frans) has word from DICE and EA on plans for a roll-back that they hope will solve some problems from the recent patch for the military shooter:
After a thorough investigation into the issues plaguing the server browser after the 1.3 Update, we believe that a last minute update in the way the Battlefield servers and Gamespy servers communicate may be the cause.

We have decided to revert this change in an attempt eliminate these browser issues. Please note that no uninstalling or re-installing is required by players or server admins. All servers currently running must be restarted once this change has taken place.

Please also note that if you are experiencing CTD issues upon start up that any alternate-ranking redirections in your windows "Hosts" file must be removed.

The reversion will occur at 2:00 PST. We are continuing to review other issues players have noted with 1.3. Further updates will be posted to this space as they become available."

I have seen in game footage of Armed Assault, it is just operation flashpoint with more modern graphics. This isnt nessersarly a bad thing, but I doubt it would bring many new players into the game. I hope the Capture the island mod makes it into Armed Assault though, that absolutly rocked op flash (for those that dont know, every player could buy AI for his squad, command them around, buy tanks to put them in etc, then attack the other teams towns on the massive map to get resources).

Armed Assault isn't going to create that big of a splash, too realistic and the graphics are so-so, only true fans of operation flashpoint will pick it up.

So much for ranked mods. I'm glad I didn't start one for this game. Must remember: never trust EA, or Microsoft.

Quake Wars can't come soon enough!

I hope that Armed Assault makes it to release too. 200 player multiplayer, w/o the EA!

I agree with you Lanz on all of that. And I don't have a problem with people building upon what has come before and making it better, or different.

I like BF42 but have only played about 40 hours of BF2 so don't have much of an opinion on it.

BUT. Objective based maps are a completely different style of gameplay then the BF Conquest/multi-CTF maps. Objectives make it more fun in my opinion and also force teamplay. I've put hundreds of hours into conquest maps as well but it's a whole different game if you ask me.

I'm really looking forward to Quake Wars. If they can pull off the asymmetrical part of it and balance it properly it should be a damn good game. Splash Damages' W:ET is still my favourite multiplayer game and I have high hopes for their new endeaver.

I imagine it'll require more balancing tweaks after release but hopefully nothing like what's been going on with BF2 for the last year.

Actually, most of those things (besides bigger maps and vehicles) comes from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and then Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Pliers has always been in there, medics, medic packs, ammo packs, mines etc etc. But instead of defibrelators they used syringes in those but I guess that didn't fit in ET:QW. So ET:QW is just a successor to W:ET with bigger maps and vehicles. Sure they might have looked at bf2 for ideas, but not as much as you would think.

Also, if I'm not entirely incorrect, the Wolfenstein IP is older than the BF IP (and no I'm not talking about Wolf3D which is obviously much older).

I didn't install the patch yet.

I learned the first time.
If I have to reinstall this again (although it says you don't have to), it will be deleted and not reinstalled. I will drop match play. This is beyond ridiculous.

two teams going at it with land and air vehicles, large open spaces, the wrench turning engineer to the defibulating medic

Yeah, but there's two things wrong with that: for one, air vehicles aren't top of the food chain, and two, the medic defibulators actually work.

calm down fan boy, I've watched some of the E3 video and there's a striking familiarity to the look of BF2, two teams going at it with land and air vehicles, large open spaces, the wrench turning engineer to the defibulating medic, while the gameplay objectives sound more like UT assault game mode, overall it has an air of borowing some from BF2, and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

So I was generalizing, don’t get your panties twisted, I’m hoping for Quake Wars will be a BF2 killer, time will tell.

DangerDog

Quake Wars and any other BF2 clone can’t come out soon enough. Too bad it doesn’t look like anything is going to happen till next

Quake Wars is NOT a BF2 clone. Asymmetric teams, actual objective gameplay (none of this stand by a flag till it drops and we get teh points W00t w00T shit). Just because QW has guys with guns and vehicles does not make it a freaking BF2 clone.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishfull thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

Yes pair programming is a part of the xp methodolgy. You need dedicated test teams not 2 devs at a console. You need the variance in mindsets and views. Devs tend to back each other up too much

Anything in the near future for BF is just mods, plain and simple. sf MOD, euro MOD, 2142 MOD etc...

I had already decided that EA/Dice shouldn't get any more of my money, and this just confirms it. They shouldn't have released the new Wake Island map either, that just made me realise how little has changed in BF2 versus the first BF game, in fact a lot was stripped. The only difference is a buggy ranking system, a craptacular engine and UAV's. Their next BF game doesn't look like much at all either...

Fucking amatures.

Quake Wars ftw.

Wasn't pair programming the central tennant of extreme programming?
I dunno if the name was just too silly to use but as I recall the 'independant' tests worked out pretty well. I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has used it in a serious project.

buddy checkins are excellent. so is the idea of weekly code reviews, or even *shock* pair-programming. I spoke up on all of these in ym last job, but apart from very limited buddy checkins, everything was rejected. Thats big company management for you, they dont want software developers (nor will they pay for them) they just want cheap hackers and bodgers. No suprise that they churn out buggy code.

Testng and "coding" are 2 very different mindsets. I am an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test). I have both hats but firmly the majority of my mind focus on the test side. I have had my fair share of "date driven" projects, and most if not all are total fuckups. Unfortunately we have to live with managers and the "its good enough ship the fucker" attitude. Im at the point now on a date driven project that I just say ship the fucker and let SE fix the bugs as they come in. It gets monotonous after a while seeing the same shite mistakes months on end and being asked to do the fucking impossible with not enough resources and time. Fuck it. Coders rely on test and automated checkin tests alot blindly, I "strongly encourage" them to "buddy test" pre checkin but its like dragging a horse to water but u cannot force them to drink unless you run a gated checkin that FORCES buddy testing and pre checkin tests.

BattleField vNext is a "we ran the race too" attempt at competing with QuakeWars. I say dont waste your money and time on BF vNext. We have already been there done that. Its a waste of your life, just look at the time wasted on BF2 already in the stats. Im horrified I wasted so much of my time on it. Its sad really. The only game that I can truely say I enjoyued wasting time on so much was Tribes 2. Period. Nothing else comes close.

thats true, but more experienced coders arent as likely to make such glaring mistakes. Most decent coders give their changes a quick shakedown test anyway before even checking in their work.
In any case, all this debacle makes me less and less likely to buy the next battlefield game.

ts pretty clear that EA are using fresh-out-of-college coders to do their patches, probably not the people who worked on the game originally.

Any decent college (college=uni? Dpn't know the US education system) would surely teach the emphasis of testing everything to the death, this is a product of fucking managers trying to push stuff out the door as quickly as they can.

it is staggering the tendency they have to screw up stuff with each patch. The server browser thing could have been spotted by any half-decent QA team. It's quite obvious that they failed to update hit boxes for the list once the list got resorted, and anyone who altered that code should have understood enough about it before they touched it.
Its pretty clear that EA are using fresh-out-of-college coders to do their patches, probably not the people who worked on the game originally. This is what happens when you let the experienced and capable staff leave. Until games develoeprs start paying good coders decent money, you will always have this problem, as anyone with any experience and skills is going to leave to form a start up so they can earn more cash.
Whoever is the producer for the battlefield series seriously needs to be given the push.

I already binned Special Farces Mod, once QW is out, Im binning BF2. I get nothing but optimising shaders and client terminations with this patch and I have changed no settings.

BF2: Narf mod

The BF2 ranking system the biggest joke.
