Gold - Half-Life 2: Episode One

Valve announces Half-Life 2: Episode One is gold, and the first installment in what will turn out to be a trilogy of follow-ups to their shooter sequel is due next week:
HALF-LIFE® 2: EPISODE ONE AVAILABLE JUNE 1

Valve Launches First of an Episodic Trilogy

Bellevue, WA, May 22, 2006 - Valve®, developer of the blockbuster series Half-Life® and Counter-Strike™, announced Half-Life® 2: Episode One has gone gold. Episode One is the first in a trilogy of episodes that will conclude by Christmas of 2007.

Half-Life 2: Episode One advances the 15-million unit selling franchise and launches the first in a new, three-part series that leads far beyond City 17. Half-Life 2: Episode One does not require Half-Life 2 to play, and will be available via Steam® and at retail stores in North America for just $19.95 on June 1st. Also included in Episode One is a first look at Episode Two, which will ship by year's end.

"Given the rapid changes in PC gaming, we expect episodic games will have the same impact on single-player gaming that Counter-Strike had on multiplayer," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "The frequent releases of upgraded technology and new content works better for both consumers and developers, and is one of the key reasons Counter-Strike grew to be 80% of the online action market. We decided that a follow-up to Half-Life 2 delivered in 18 months with our first episode was more in tune with what our customers want than waiting 6 years for another monolithic product."

Episode One offers a new single player experience created by Valve, and is designed to be four to six hours in length. Stepping into the hazard suit of Dr. Gordon Freeman, you face the immediate repercussions of your actions in City 17 and the Citadel. Alyx Vance and her robot, Dog, will accompany you in your efforts to aid in the human resistance's desperate battle against the totalitarian alien menace of the Combine.

In addition to the new single player experience, two multiplayer games are included. And those who purchase Episode One will have free access via Steam (www.steamgames.com) to Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, the interactive technology demo that introduces High Dynamic Range lighting to the Source™ Engine, Valve's award-winning game technology.

Meh.

I expect the thread to get a lot more controversial than 'meh', on that topic.

$20 for 4 - 6 hours. That's one night, maybe two if I go out for dinner. Pass.

Exactly. I'm a huge fan of Half-Life 2. I think it's one of the finest FPS games but I'm not going to shell out 20 dollars for not even a 1/4 of a game. 4-6 hours is pretty damn tiny when you consider you paid 50 for the full game which takes a few days. Come on Valve. Stop the nonsense before it spreads to everyone else.

With the dollar so weak at the moment, a $17.95 (pre-order price) game is peanuts in the UK - about the cost of 4 cups of coffee at Starbucks - and that's after VAT (UK's equivalent to Sales Tax) is added. I can't believe how cheap Steam makes things for me. I bought Sin as well, just because it cost next-to-nothing and it looked like it might be fun.

Well, you'd think that the risk of pissing people off so they don't buy the next episode would sort of guarantee that they make an effort as to make buyers satisfied, right?

You're wrong about being wrong, Ant

HL1DM: Source uses some of the assets from HL1: Source, so it has to be loaded when you get HL1DM: Source as part of HL2: Ep1.

Gawd, this is getting complicated.

you get:

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Half-Life Deathmatch: Source

in other words, if you bought hl2 already, you get 4-6 hours of game for $20.

If you haven't its an ok deal, hl dm is kinda fun.

Be nice if there was a price break for those who bought hl2.

Seems like a lot.
I know, I'll convert my dollars to pounds then...no that won't work.

Its the price of 4 overpriced starbucks uber-coffees, which just goes to show that its overpriced. bah. Its the principle of the thing, dammit, not the $5.

I have no idea how it works legally, but when I set my country to UK, upon purchasing Sin Episodes and HL2Ep1 (and, I think HL2, but that was a long time ago), VAT is added at the point of purchase.

I've never had it added for any other software licenses I've bought from the US, so perhaps it's simply that Valve are doing the right thing, by the letter of the law, and other companies don't have the resources to do it. I really have no idea.

Three... interesting. By 2007 the Source Engine will look very dated, even with HDR.

However... $60 for 18 hours - I've spent more on less.

By 2007 the Source Engine will look very dated, even with HDR.

I would assume that they'll overhaul the renderer, adding new features and upping the content resolution (polycount, texture res, and shader complexity), much in the same way as they've added a few new bits and pieces to the engine already.

The big thing they'll have to do at some point is sort out multithreading (I believe Source is still mostly single-threaded), and the light-surface interaction (i.e. dynamic lighting and shadowing, a la Doom 3). I can't see that the light-surface stuff will require much beyond a renderer rework, and the multithreading aspect of things is something that can be transparent to mods, maps, and tools.

All of the core concepts (lights, objects, shaders, sounds, scripting, etc) are in place for Source to move forward without a complete rewrite any time soon, as far as I can see it.
