I'm tired of the hatin' on the whole patching process. I've been playing these online shooters since quake. Been through the Tribes 2 fiasco and the counterstrike DISASTER, and loved the Battlefield series from day one(except Vietnam...we'll just pretend it didn't happen). AND enjoyed every damned one of them thoroughly, thorough the whole process.Anyways i am also a college graduate whose studies focused on applied computer science. I took a game programming class whose aim was uncertain. Our goal became to produce a first person shooter in the very basic sense of the word. I can provide a link to it if needed. Anyways we used the wild magic engine, from David Eberly. It is a large custom library c++ game engine that is built from the ground up from one person. There are custom Math libraries built, as well as an object system. The implementation being a "scene tree" for those who care. Anyways i learned a lot during that course, and i am someone who knew JACK SHIT about game programming before that. Anyways, before you go belittling professional game programmers on their incompetence, i hope that maybe you might take into consideration the kind of effort that goes into making such a(even a basic) system actually work how it is supposed to. First you need knowledge of matrix multiplications, quaternions, vectors, and various geometrical operations to accomplish even the basics. Then you need knowledge of the way the library or source handles the object handling. Then you need to deal with the additions from the team that handles the design of the game. They will say: "Wouldn't it be great if we could have this?" You will say no. This will turn the construction of this game engine by us Engineers upside down. Management Says: "Too bad, do it, i think it is a good idea." Anyways deadline comes and you have a version that works on a few systems, but it does work. You warn management that debugging and testing need to happen first before an official release date. Management Says "No release it." Of course, a bunch of people have problems running the piece of software that worked, but wasn't ready for the diverse types of machines that exist with users. I could go on with this, but at this point i hope you get the picture. Hell if you even get to the end of this post feel free to call me an ass. Just give me proper justification. Please. I realize this is a message board, but give me a break. It's been a long day at work.

I played the demo of this recently (I always figured my computer / net connection wouldn't hack it) and it's really good fun. I only got the hang of footsoldiering / vehicle driving (ie not aeroplanes / choppers yet) but it's quite cool. I suck, of course, and the demo is lame as far as working in a team goes... but after exams I might try and pick it up on the cheap.

Why would they add co-op and then leave it so that live people can join both sides? That ain't co-op, thats just bot support.

So, what does that mean? You play with what you can play. CSS plays on pretty much anything, which is fine by me. However the game is lasting because it has been around for 7+ years (counting the original). Of course it will have high stats, but doesn't mean it is still popular or played often.

??

The "stats" are data representing factual values -- factual values of the actual number of people playing these games online, at any given time, as tracked by gamespy -- no one is manipulating this information -- a game that has a greater number of players is inherently played more often.

However, here is one example where this would not be true. Game X has 40,000 players that each play for 30 minutes per day. Game Y has 2,000 players that play for 601 minutes per day. Therefore game Y is played more often. However, would you say that a game played by 2,000 players (5% the player-base of game X) is more popular than game X? I wouldn't.

I don't know what you're smoking, but give me some.

I hope it still lets me install without using C: drive since it has 800 MB free.

Damnit, Ant -- it's been at 800 MB free for like a year now!! That drive should be positively overflowing with pr0ns by now!

I don't think statistics tell the whole truth. When I was in Thailand all the game shops played CSS> When I talked to someone about BF1942 and BF2 they said they didn't have the machines that could play those games, or the servers.

So, what does that mean? You play with what you can play. CSS plays on pretty much anything, which is fine by me. However the game is lasting because it has been around for 7+ years (counting the original). Of course it will have high stats, but doesn't mean it is still popular or played often.

Hell even Warcraft RTS is played to this day and C&C (the original), doesn't mean that it is popular if you're going by statistics. I would wager that BF2 is played more in America than CSS, CSS is played more outside of America due to lower end systems. Stats are skewed and don't show the whole picture.

Anyways, this patch didn't do much for me. Played for about 2 hours, neat and all, didn't see any of the old bugs yet.

Oh and if you're worried about getting caught hacking, just unplug your internet modem for 20 minutes, changes the ip, wa la! If they banned by Mac address that would be a lot harder.

I know quite a few companies, hundreds in fact, in the gaming industry that benchmark their game's popularity on whether or not Venomhed and his friends play the game.

You say that like it usually means something

or in many cases just because a game is awful, doesn't mean it isn't popular.

LOL, so true, so disgustingly true.

CSS has plenty of hacks, which made me quit entirely. I know quite a few people, hundreds in fact, in the gaming industry that no longer play the game.

You can post your stats all you want, but when everyone I know doesn't play a game, that usually means something.

Anecdotal evidence means nothing.

The game, quite simply, is growing in popularity.
You assumed it was declining.

You're wrong. And sadly, not willing to admit to it.
Just because you don't like a game, or in many cases just because a game is awful, doesn't mean it isn't popular.

CSS is the most popular online FPS game. It wasn't a few months ago. So yes, that says something, much more than whether or not you know anyone that plays it.
Personally I don't know a single person that plays it. But I don't really know any gamers.

I have a friend that loves to hack and cheat. He got caught and was globally banned. He got a new key and circumvented the hardware ban and continuned to cheat. Then they cleverly globally banned his host name address. He hasn't played since.

So many of the anti-hack measures do work.
