Warcraft Movie Plans

Warcraft prepares for big-screen battle (thanks Mike Martinez) has word on plans to bring Blizzard's Warcraft series to the big screen as a major motion picture:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The hugely popular "Warcraft" video games have inspired plans for a live-action feature film set in the epic fantasy universe of orcs, trolls, elves and the undead.

The project is being developed by the creator of the games, Blizzard Entertainment Inc., and producer Legendary Pictures, which acquired the movie rights.

The "Warcraft" games debuted in 1994, and the franchise now has four titles in release. "Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness" (1995) won multiple game of the year awards, while "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos" (2002) broke sales records. The latest game, "World of Warcraft," is one of the most popular multiplayer online role-playing games, with a reported subscription base of more than 6 million.

Omg, how dare they make a live-action movie. Their cinematic graphics are (to me) the most realistic game cinematics out there (Square Enix is good too) So when I heard they were making a movie I instantly knew it was going to be good. Till I figured out it was'nt CGI. I have doubts about its quality now... I wonder if they can pull off a great movie without CGI???

Also, remember this; there haven't been any stories of mass firings (We'd be talking on the scale of well over a hundred if they dropped the RTS and North teams entirely, and it’d be all over the news. The biggest thing I've heard is like 10 people from the WoW team leaving.) nor has there been any evidence of a sudden rush of WoW content

That's true, although I suppose many of them could just be working on WoW related stuff. With the money it's bringing in, Blizzard really isn't going to hurt for letting 100 people sit in their studio, biding their time, or pre-emptively working on Yet More WoW.

I guess we'll see

Ghost was canceled for the Xbox and PS2 with Blizzard saying that they're evaluating whether or not to start/port a next-gen version. Keep in mind that Blizzard went out and bought a console developer: I'd imagine they would have them work on something even if Ghost has been completely canceled. (Granted, that could wind up being a console version of WoW)

On what the other two Blizzard teams are doing; From what I’ve heard (and granted, this could all turn out to be bullshit, though I don't think it is), they did indeed temporarily suspend the majority of work on whatever the RTS guys were doing, in order to get more people to finish up WoW. Now that WoW has been released and only patch and expansion content is being developed, they went back to working on whatever they were working on before.

As for Blizzard North, the loss of the founders screwed up development a bit, causing the cancellation of one project and apparently affecting the development of the other project *coughDiablo3cough* enough that Blizzard eventually folded Blizzard North, scrapped most of the work, and basically reorganized everyone from North into a new internal team at the Irving studio so they can keep closer eye on the development.

The reason they have't announced anything yet, from what I understand, is that Blizzard doesn't want another situation where they reveal a game and then years and years go past before it gets released. They want to try and have a definite release window up before revealing their next project. As seen with SC, War3, SC:G and even WoW to an extent, the initial showing is often way off the mark from the final product anyway.

Also, remember this; there haven't been any stories of mass firings (We'd be talking on the scale of well over a hundred if they dropped the RTS and North teams entirely, and it’d be all over the news. The biggest thing I've heard is like 10 people from the WoW team leaving.) nor has there been any evidence of a sudden rush of WoW content. So either Blizzard is paying a bunch of people to sit around and look good in on employee roster/do minimal work; or they're working on something. And if Blizzard is anywhere near the money-grubbing evil organization people make them out to be, there's no way in hell they'd have employed a bunch of people doing little-to-no work. =D

Also, I need to learn how to spell canceled.

Creston I agree that Blizzard should have announced something by now. I guess I got used to the company taking its sweet time to do anything.

Well maybe this September, they usually announce their games then, and I too hope is SC2 (not really D3 thou, I would like for them to develop a new IP).

If you had a money printing game like WOW, would you give a shit about other IPs the company owned?

No, not at all, I just give a shit about being able to tell people "I told you so!"

Just because they didn’t announce anything doesn’t mean they aren’t working on anything.

Granted, but how long have those other teams been working then. You mention the SC/WC3 team. WC3 came out in, what, 2003? Diablo2 came out in like 2000. What have they been doing all that time?
I think if a game had been in development by either of those teams, ie, a minimum of around 2.5/3 years to maybe 5 years, we'd have heard SOMETHING by now?

I think both those teams just got swallowed up into WoW's mammoth maw.

I don't really care all that much, the only game I'm interested in seeing them make is SC2. (well, maybe Diablo 3 if it was really good. Titan Quest so far looks like it will be a worth spiritual successor though.)

One thing you gotta admit, though, is that Blizzard has simply stopped doing anything new. WoW is all they do now. SC : Ghost has been cancelled, and what else is there?
Nada.

There is one team that did WoW still working on the expansion, one that worked on SC and WC3 probably working on something and one that did Diablo that’s working on something.

The only way this would actually be any good is if they get Peter Jackson to do it, and just rehire the whole LotR crew.
I'm sure Bryan Singer or Mike Newell could do something pretty good with this.

As I KEEP having to point out, this is a lie. Two of the three original founders of Blizzard (Mike Morhaime and Allen Adhem) are still at Blizzard, as are the head people in the programming, sound, story, art and cinimatic departments.

They've lost people, yes. But all the "top guys" haven't been fired. Not even close.

Now, Blizzard North is another situation; which is why they were reabsorbed back into the Irving studio so Blizzard can monitor their project more closely.

One thing you gotta admit, though, is that Blizzard has simply stopped doing anything new. WoW is all they do now. SC : Ghost has been cancelled, and what else is there?
Nada.

Which is what I predicted would happen.

Edit : I see someone posted saying that SC : Ghost is still in the works, but didn't we have a news item about this a few months ago, that it WAS cancelled?

Having a CGI movie doesn't guarantee a success either. Remember Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Such a waste.

Jesus, How f@#$ing brain washed are you? I like Blizzard as much as the next nerd, but their entire system is copy and improve. They ripped off LOTR f@#$ing heavily and if you think there is one ounce of originality in Warcraft your brain is so god damn melted from the media there really is no point in discussing it anymore.
No more than you are, thinking every movie that uses similar shots is ripping off LOTR. I'm not a Blizzard fanboy either. I happen to like most of the Warcraft games (and Starcraft), but I couldn't care less about Diablo. Anyway, I'll be the first to admit Warcraft borrowed from the fantasy setting of LOTR (the book that is). Hell, every fantasy game, book, or movie has to some extent. However, I'd also agree with the people saying Tolkien didn't invent modern fantasy; he certainly fine-tuned it though, and everything since has copied him. What I don't agree with is your claim that the Warcraft III cinematics copied the Lord of the Rings movies.

Are you studying cinema in school or something? Because I'm curious if you have some sort of expertise I lack on the subject, of if you're just a closet expert like the majority of forum posters.

I have to say that after thinking about it, a live action movie could really work ... as long as they throw a good director, cast, special effects and enough money at it. Star Wars, Harry Potter, LoTR, Kong, hell even 5th Element (those bandit guys would make good Orcs); all good movies which worked.

But there is a fine line between "it's good" and "it sucks". Skimp on any of the above and it'll inevitably go down the "it sucks" path. After all ... look at Doom. :p

The only thing the movie producers see is the membership totals. They could care less if the movie is good, or has anything at all to do with WoW.

They figure if even half the population of the game world watches it, they'll have a hit on their hands.

I, too, am cynical about a Warcraft movie. Live-action, no doubt...it could really, really suck.

Game property movies have been mostly ass, with some minor standouts valuable only as campy entertainment (the first Mortal Kombat movie). So, everyone who is skeptical is justified there.

Blizzard Film (the in-house team that makes their world-class cinematics) should be making a feature-length CG movie, I think (and others have said), but that would be a much greater financial risk (remember the Final Fantasy movie?) for Blizzard than simply licensing their world to professional filmmakers.

What is interesting to me, as a general Warcraft nerd and lore expert, is theorizing about what part of the saga they'll focus on. Whether they try to just pick one major conflict (First War, Second War) or try and do a general thing that covers everything from all the games, or try to do a movie that reflects how the world GENERALLY is, making it about no-names in the WC universe (that would also suck).

And wondering who is writing the script...whether people like Chris Metzen will have a role in the production of the film - as consultants, hopefully with some kind of creative control.

I hold a glimmer of hope that the pieces will come together and they'll make a movie worthy of one of the more compelling game universes there is, considering how much care has gone into making a compelling storyline so far.

It'd be fun to see some epic battles, maybe a showdown with Deathwing, or the Sundering Of The Earth, something really cool like that.

I'm scared it'll be Hollywood B-list in plate mail, riding horses and looking uncomfortable, like what the Morrowind movie seems to be.

Well, I know what they can do. Hire all the Ompa-Loompas from the original Willy Wonka movie & get them to say stupid shit like "DaBoo" & "Zug Zug" & "Ready for Work" & "What do you want me to do?" & "DaBoo" again.

This movie will put the ultra-suck on a game series that already sucks. Can't you already hear the sound of wood being cut? "DaBoo".

This could be real cool as a CGI based film. Especially by the people that make the Blizzard cinematics. Seeing this as a Live Film, aside from it having to hit nearly upon the same production as Lord of the Rings to be effective, it could come off as being horribly lame. I think Starcraft would have made a much more badass film though Warcraft is going to be tricky if not going all CGI.
