Rats, it should have been last week. I haven't watched TV for the longest stretch in, ever, I think. At least two weeks I'd guess. I'm a big TV watcher too. Anybody care to hazard a guess why my perfectly good TV set has been off for so long?

Fair or not, the US is still responsible for 28% of the worlds carbon dioxide emissions

24% according to Wikipedia, but we're also responsible for 28% of the world's GDP (nominal), so it's not that insanely bad. It's still nowhere near as good as the EU (30% GDP, 15% emissions), and pretty much at the bottom of industrialized countries, but it isn't as horrible and evil as many people make it out to be.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing gas prices go up to $5/gallon ($10+ in EU) in the near future. Yes, it would suck, but maybe it would finally make people realize that they need to change their driving habits, the kinds of cars they buy, and so forth. The only way things are going to get better is if the market forces them to.

I bet there is a Chinlone fantasy site on the internet, where people do that but in the nude.

There are also still a lot of people who depend on their cars for driving long distances in Sweden, especially there since much of the country is not very densely populated. Not really anything you could call a luxury, but rather a necessity, so stop using historical differences between the US and other parts of the world as a argument infavor of continued massive pollution. Just deal with the problem instead!

You're reading too much into what I said. I just stated the difference. I'm not for it, but that's the way it is and it needs to be taken into consideration. And I know there are people who need to drive in Europe, that's why I said 'generally'

And you are definitely right about people in America not being accustomed to the gas prices, evident by the cars they drive. I've never been to Europe, but I would bet money that there are less SUVs and more fuel-efficient cars on the road (like the Smart Car, curiously not street legal in the US but fine here in Canada).

Comparing North American gas prices to European prices is not a fair comparison.

Fair or not, the US is still responsible for 28% of the worlds carbon dioxide emissions.

Also, the kinds of vehicles you find on the roads here in Riverside, CA clearly shows that people doesn't really care much about gas prices. The price is not much of an incentive for people to start pushing their politicians for some kind of change.

Most American cities are intentionally designed for cars, and mass transit was decimated in the early 20th century by oil and auto corporations. Europe largely escaped this, and as a result cars and gasoline are treated as luxury items and taxed accordingly.
