The Steam Ship

This press release announces retail plans for The Ship, the commercial release of a project that began life as a Half-Life 2 modification. The Ship Website is online with details on this "unique multiplayer PC game" from Outerlight Ltd., and while the press release mentions a September in-store date, The Ship FAQ clarifies it will also be out on Steam in May. Here's a bit:
Blending traditional first and third person gameplay with a Sims-style day-to-day needs system - including food, sleep and social interaction - The Ship offers exploration, investigation, survival, stealth, intrigue and murder across beautifully crafted decking and highly-polished interactive environments.

On the Poop Deck, The Ship proudly boasts a number of modes of gameplay including Arcade Mode offline and Hunt, Elimination, Deathmatch and Duel, all online.

The Ship's gameplay revolves around 'the Hunt'. The rules of the Hunt are simple. Each player is given the name of one of the other contestants on-board and must hunt them down and kill them with any weapon they can find. Depending on the game mode, either the last hunter alive is the winner or the one with the most money in their bank account wins.

Seriously...press 'b' to breathe in, release it to breathe out. Do this every couple of seconds or you pass out.

And for those who haven't develloped a sense of sarcasm...yeah, I REALLY want that.

You fail at trying to be funny and topical.

A LOT of developers are signing up for Steam. It definitely looks like it's taking off big time.

Despite its not terribly user friendly GUI, I'm firmly onboard the Digital Distribution bandwagon. The gamestop in the mall has basically stopped selling PC games, so now the only places left are CompUSA and Best Buy. Best Buy = Teh Suck, and the CompUSA hovers between getting stuff on release day, and getting it a week later.

Just let me download it and burn a DVD copy, and I'll be happy.

Yes, I know I have joined the Dark Side. They have more cookies anyways.

I hope they aren't charging $20 for that, this is less content then SiN Episode 1 and for only 6 Ship maps with what seems to be essentially the same gameplay...

This sounds really pretty funy. And very unique.

EDIT: Upon further review of their website, this game sounds great. A really cool concept. I hope it's not too expensive.

Are you some kind of anti-shill? Every post of yours has been basically the same. Or maybe you're a shill for one of the competing game services. Hmm...

Wow people still bash titles based on their Steamness even today? And on reading skills - the info Blue provided us even says it'll be in stores.

"No money for you then."

From the FAQ linked to on this very page:

"Can I buy 'The Ship' in a shop?

Yes, the game will be released world-wide as a retail product from 15th September 2006 in UK and Europe and from January 2007 in the USA."

No reading skills for you then.

Okay, we get it already.

I've got no problem with Steam, it's just it won't accept my debit card - it just isn't practical for me to ask my friends to buy something for me using their card. I love the archaic system we live in whereby people that want to buy something and have the money are often unable to because their money is the wrong type... surely it is in businesses interests to sort this shit out?

This looks like an interesting game. I can't envisage exactly how the gameplay works, as I believe would be pretty obvious to me which characters are controlled by the AI and which are controlled by humans. Still, I'm interested to see what these guys can come up with. Their art direction looks fantastic, and the gameplay concept is intriguing at the very least. A demo is what will sell this to me, I suspect... but if they give away a sixth of their content, that's going to make the game a hard sell. Difficult times for them, but I'm phenomenally glad to see Steam really living up to its promise of providing an outlet for a range of unusual but commercially viable games.

I played the original mod for half-life when it came out. It was really fun, keeping yourself healthy while trying to murder somone without them knowing makes for some great gameplay. Looks pretty good on the source engine too.

they should have made the title of the game On the Poop Deck

much more captivating than simply calling it The Ship... thats about as vanilla as you can get

Between this, Shadowgrounds and SiN Ep 1, it looks like they'll be keeping their "three releases a month" plan that they mentioned awhile back. Crazy..

Finally something with some originality that also has the artwork to match. I'd be surprised if it takes off but I think it deserves to... everything about it smacks of professionalism. I'd never seen the original version but this version looks a lot better. I just hope the real world aspects don't compromise the gameplay.
