Out of the Blue

We had the plumber out yesterday to investigate some water that is collecting in the basement in the washer/furnace/heater area. His son had previously looked at this but was unable to determine for certain if it was the hot water heater, the washer, or some of the related pipes in the area. The bad news was that it is indeed the classically oxymoronic hot water heater (why would you need to heat hot water?). He's going to be back early next week to replace it. It could be a lot worse… I think there's a cliché about at least one such repair popping up immediately after one moves into a house, but this thing held out for around six years before going.

While I side with Trey and Matt on this one - go free speech! - I wonder why they didn't put up more of a fight? They certainly carry a lot of weight, methinks they should have thrown around a lot more.

Too bad Comedy Central did worse than pussing out by pulling the episode. By airing the episode with a censored image it contradicted the whole message of the show. I felt dirty after watching it.

Take solace in the fact that an image of Mohammed was in fact on the show.

He's in the opening credits, appearing as he did on the "Super Friends" spoof.

Of course, the one scene with im in it is the scene with ALL of the characters standing in front of the town. So finding him requires freezing the frame and breaking out the "Where's Waldo" skills.

I guess this is a weapon of peace, not war.

Probably the exact opposite, a quintessential example of the security dilemma. If the primary disinclination for going to war in a democracy is the fear of casualties then technology like this makes a state less secure. With a decreased "cost" for war, the inclination to go to war increases. It's like with SDI during the eighties. While on the surface pursuing technology that would enable a state to "win" a nuclear war sounds worthwhile, the effect is exactly the opposite. When total nuclear annihilation ceases to be a consequence for using nukes then the inclination to use nukes dramatically increases, making a state less secure.

True. He didn't fall to his death while speed climbing though. Actually, it seems like he got bored by speed free-climbing and found a new hobby in extreme bungee jumping later on. He died in the Yosemite Nat'l Park when trying to do a 1000ft leap from a platform. It was getting dark and so he was in a hurry to get that jump done. Seems like he decided last minute to change the angle of the jump and that was his mistake. The rope couldn't take the stress and tore apart...

I'm researching tankless water heaters which seem to be a good way to go although installation by a professional increases the cost a bit.

Anyone have a link to the detailed conversation we had?
I may look at doing this in the near future.

I've already replumbed my house, rewired it and run new gas lines myself so installing one myself probably won't be an issue.
I do have a plumber coming out to quote me on a Rinnai http://foreverhotwater.com but I think he'll be to expensive--about $1000 for the unit + $2,000 for his labor.
I'll most likely end up going with a Bosch from Home depot, the type that auto-ignites when it detects water flow since I can install that one myself--the Rinnai requires professional installation for the warranty.
Costwise, the devices that can supply around 6.5-8.5 gallons per minute of hot water are about $1000 which is, of course, a deal more than the normal ones, but the cost savings would probably equal out over 2-3 years especially with the prices of natural gas.
Consider that the gas water heaters run a pilot light all day, ignite to heat the water back up at least once an hour (for longer should you actually use any hot water), and the tankless ones sound pretty good.
The ones I'm looking at can supply 2 major outlets at once, i.e. dishwasher + shower.

Had a water softener when I was growing up, but we had well water.

Sorry to hear about the water heater Blue. I just replaced mine recently. I found out about it when my neighbor (townhouse) asked if something was leaking because her basement was wet

Actually it was probably around 6 when we got here, it's more like 12 now.

How many other's here have water softners?

Not here... Don't know anyone in the NYC area that needs one. Hard water is always an issue with our relatives in PA, though.
