Out of the Blue

We had the plumber out yesterday to investigate some water that is collecting in the basement in the washer/furnace/heater area. His son had previously looked at this but was unable to determine for certain if it was the hot water heater, the washer, or some of the related pipes in the area. The bad news was that it is indeed the classically oxymoronic hot water heater (why would you need to heat hot water?). He's going to be back early next week to replace it. It could be a lot worse… I think there's a cliché about at least one such repair popping up immediately after one moves into a house, but this thing held out for around six years before going.

If you were to take a shower with hard water, then take a shower with soft water, you can tell a difference. Soft water is also easier on the skin and washes soap away a lot better. I think women would also say it is better for their hair.

I hate "soft" water - I always feel "slimy" at the end. I like "hard" water and Ivory soap - squeaky clean!

I'm researching tankless water heaters which seem to be a good way to go although installation by a professional increases the cost a bit.
Anyone have a link to the detailed conversation we had?
I may look at doing this in the near future.

As long as they're not like those goddamn long-life low-energy bulbs that, while efficient, put out a horrible flourescent glow, not a proper light bulb or halogen glow. It's like living in a dingy car park.

I have to chuckle at the people talking tough about the climb because its only 5.7

yes, 5.7 is easy if you have experience, but us sane people always use rope and a competent belay partner. comparing that to a solo 5.7 is just fucking stupid and reeks of poser

its like comparing top rope to lead climbing...its a completely different game. if you're going to talk tough about it..sac up and go solo it yourself if 5.7 is so easy.

till then, stfu and respect the feat.

Hey look at that, another girl! The Blue's News female readership has doubled!

Woo! I'll tell Heather as soon as she's finished... uh... providing for our newest addition. I'm sure she'll be elated

I'd go back and tell her now, but I'm currently trying to figure out which muscles don't hurt. Spent the entire day w/ my brother doing work on the house -- mostly replacing cedar siding that was severely damaged (the previous homeowners painted the house... but whoever they hired didn't paint one side of the chimney, so it's literally been falling apart).

As for other homeowner joys -- not too bad here. That said, prior to buying the place I hired an independant home inspector (can't recommend them highly enough, no matter how much you think you know). As she was doing her inspection she went down to the basement, poked her head above the drop ceiling and said "Uh... no, I don't think so."

The basement lighting (standard flourescent tube lights) was wired via 18-gauge extension cords. And it was all plugged into a socket adapters. The entire thing was operated not by a switch, but rather by a string tied to the pull chain on one of the lights, across the ceiling, and then down behind a wall. The string was attached to a washer so it wouldn't get lost. The homeowners refused to fix it prior to sale, claiming that it was done by the previous homeowners. I let it slide since I knew I was going to rip out and replace the entire electrical system in the basement anyway. Which I did (and ripped out the fire hazard nightmare a few days after moving in).

Wait a minute. You used the term "hubby" in a sentence, implying you are married. Does that mean you are also a woman? I thought we only had one of those we actually knew about...

I just love new houses.
At least you had plumbing. When I moved into a house about 10 years ago, the fuckers we were buying it from (this really strange, super-religious, super-nutty family who made bullets where I now keep most of my computers) took the fucking sump pump. Our entire basement flooded the first time it rained hard. They also took the new refrigerator they were leaving us with and replaced it with one from a junk yard. I'm pretty sure the the home owners (or the real estate agent) paid off the inspector, too. Criminals.

f it makes you feel any better Blue, in the four years that I've owned my house I've had to

Replace all the kitchen appliances
Replace the oil furnace/heater
Have my septic tank reseated
Replace both garage doors and door openers
Re-side the house
Replace the deck and front porch
Rewire part of the house
Replace the water pump, the tank and the softener

Now some of these we didn't have to do right away but knew they needed to be done within a couple of years of the original purchase. However, most were needed due to failure.

Well I hope you bought the house at least knowing it was a fixer-upper.

Its stuff like this that makes me want to have the next house I own to be custom built rather than buying something existing. One BIG home "improvement" project up front rather than a bunch of smaller ones continuosly ongoing.

Blue, At least you had a few years before replacing the water heater.

The day my hubby and I moved into our new house. I was pulled out of the shower due to the plumbing backing up. We had a plumber out here on the 23rd of Dec. He found that the contractor that installed the septic tank didn't remove the "cookie" that from the plumbing section.

After that was done, I was pulled out again on the 24th for the same reason. This time we had the house builder come and fix this problem. Needless to say, on Christmas day the plumbers and septic people were in my backyard on Christmas digging up the problem to fix it.

I just love new houses.

why would you need to heat hot water?)

You would need to heat hot water if you want to boil it (I heat hot water all the time, when I'm trying to cook). Or if the water is not hot enough. In fact, the hot water heater turns on all the time to continue to heat the already hot water, to keep it hot.

The note at the beginning says it's a 5.7. The height of the climb is irrelevant as a factor, at a 5.7 difficulty any experienced climber who has climbed that route a dozen or so times should be able to whip up it no problem.

There's local climbs here in Calgary that are 5.7's, now they're only 30M but I can get up them in about 25 seconds or so.

Granted I'd still use a rope because falling to your death sucks but ...
