Oblivion Patch/Content Plans

The Update on Patches-Updates-Content-Etc. on The Elder Scrolls Forums (thanks Voodoo Extreme) has word on plans for an upcoming patch for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to address a number of reported issues. The patch will appear in beta form for the PC first, and when finalized will also be made available for the Xbox 360 edition, and following all that they will be releasing a patch for the European editions of the game to address localization issues. The post goes on to describe the next couple of bits of content they will be offering for sale, the quest to repair the Imperial Orrery and a structure called the Wizard's Tower. The update concludes by justifying the high price of add-on content, but admits they are experimenting in finding a price point that reduces sticker shock:
We hope to have The Orrery available for purchase next week. This plugin will cost 150pts on Xbox, and $1.89 on the PC. The Horse Armor Pack has been very popular, and exceeded what we thought it would sell. Despite that, we’re still trying to find the right spot, so we’re putting a much larger plugin out for less than the last one and we'll see what happens. Your feedback as we move forward in this is invaluable. Tell us what you want to see, how much of it, and what it might be worth to you. No, don’t say you want it free, because these plugins take a surprising amount of time to create, polish, and test (much more then Morrowind's).

And that sets a dangerous precedent - how do you start a mod, when B may decide later to do the same thing, and cause your mod (and all the work you did) to get pulled?

It doesn't set a dangerous precdent at all. Bethesda release something for a fee, then a modder releases something to get back at Bethesda? (I remember reading the info, but didn't see screenshots of the mod) And still, with the tower, I thought someone else had made a quest for it. I don't believe that's been shut down, and that predates the Bethesda mod.

I'd still like to know if this modder's horse pack was just a rip of the pay version. If so, that's a precedent I think I can live with.

Assuming they worked on the horse mod from day of release to day of horse mod release (14days), the horse mod should have cost $0.56.

So Bethesda should take a loss (because you didn't even consider the salaries being paid, or the bandwidth, or the credit card processing fees, or any other factor that goes into development besides time) because of an arbitrary formula you deemed fair?

This is the exact problem with micropayments in general. On the other hand, this is probably one of the most successful ways so far.

yeah, part of the reason a lot of people put the official horse armor mod on the official Oblivion forums...it's floating around on the interweb everywhere....

Check towards the end of the horse armor thread here @ Blue's...someone made one, and it got pulled real quick...

4 years of development = 1460

At a $60 price point, that means each user contributed $0.04 toward every day of development.

Assuming they worked on the horse mod from day of release to day of horse mod release (14days), the horse mod should have cost $0.56.

That would have been a fair price. And would be a good wway of working out how much future items should cost.

If they put a lot of time into it, then the price goes up and the community will know its worth it.

Simple and easy.

I really don't have a problem with them selling add-ons. What they really should do, though, is build the editing and art tools into the game in real time, and act as a broker selling the user's creations for a percentage, through internet connectivity. Maybe it would be too easy to break the game attempting to design a game around such a system, but it certainly would be a wonderful challenge that no one has done so far.

I wonder why it takes more time than Morrowind?

Maybe the physics. Dunno though. I don't know how that stuff is integrated with the game. That'd be my guess though. I know that pounding out a (generic) dungeon isn't too difficult, since I've been creating one myself, so it's certainly not with the level design.

Granted, they probably put more thought in to it than, "Let's put a door here. That looks nice." I hope they do, anyway.

I'm not complaining about this until Bethesda try and take down modders because they're threatning Bethesda's profits. I'm just going to keep using things like I am now, and not care what the game's "rep" is, since last time I checked, the game still has far too much content than I'll ever get to, and it ain't going anywhere.

Bethesda want to try and rip off consumers after the release? Go right the fuck ahead, I'll just buy whatever I don't see as a ripoff. I'm not so ideogical that I need to rip on a game because the company decide to release optional add-ons that the base game I already bought doesn't need.

I got tired of Oblivion already. Yeah, I guess the $2 horse armor, the most useless thing imaginable, did push me away a bit, but I've also seen just about everything there is to see outside of the main quest. My own fault, I watched my roommates play, between the three of us we've kind of done it all.

I was accepted to the Auto Assault beta, but didn't care. Had I gotten in sooner maybe, but by the time I was invited I was back in a huge Civ 4 rut. Which, now that I'm not playing a lot of Oblivion, I'm back into.

I hope they patch the problems leading to corrupted save game files. I had to restart from an earlier save point after repeatedly crashing. It was one of the stupid "follow X person around" for an hour type quests. Blah. Like I want to do that again.

Yea your right about the 360 owners. It would be pretty bad if they were the only ones charged. To modders though, I hope someone buys it and then replicates it somehow and gives it to the community as a mod. Would that be hard to do? Making the quests and things that are charged, as mods for people to download?

I don't think this is a big deal. If you didn't charge PC users, Xbox users would flip their wig. Plus we get mods made by users, which can be superior to dev mods, for free.

And tell them you want expansions instead of nickel and dime mods. Obviously they are looking for feedback.

I wonder why it takes more time than Morrowind? It seems like, aside from the obvious graphical facelift, it is pretty much the same game.

Thing is this is coming up a lot now in different games. Battlefield for example has booster maps with a few maps and weapons which is great but for 20 dollars thats insane. Expansion packs back in the day were huge. Remember the expansion to the first Command & Conquer? It had a good amount of missions and new vehicles for both sides. It just seems prices are going up as content in the packages is getting less and less. 60 bucks for a 10 hour game? Garbage.

Oh fuck you Bethesda, until you start releasing a city for $2, you are ripping everyone off!

You know, I was going to say "ripping everyone off" was a little overboard, but following B's pricing model, there should (for the $50 Oblivion costs) only be 25 things/quests/items in the game (at $2 a piece)...

So yeah...I guess it is a rip off...

edit: What a great way to soil a great game's rep...

There's more than enough content in the vanilla game to keep people occupied for a LONG time. You can completely steer clear of these small addons and still have a gaming experience far above and beyond most of the other "$60 for 20 hours of play" nonsense that has been coming out lately. I don't see any problem with these small addons, its not like they released a broken game, declined to fix it, and still kept pooping out content expansions (*cough* BF2). I applaud them for releasing a fully functional construction set as well, although 3DS-Max support would have been nice. Its definately not a mobile-phone closed content system (at least on the PC). Just my two cents.

Yea I think the little content releases with a charge are just screwing us. I'd rather pay 20 bucks in a few months for an expansion with more dungeons, armor, weapons and other things. I'm not spending 2 dollars here and 2 dollars there for a sword or a quest. Give me a break.
