Oblivion Patch/Content Plans

The Update on Patches-Updates-Content-Etc. on The Elder Scrolls Forums (thanks Voodoo Extreme) has word on plans for an upcoming patch for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to address a number of reported issues. The patch will appear in beta form for the PC first, and when finalized will also be made available for the Xbox 360 edition, and following all that they will be releasing a patch for the European editions of the game to address localization issues. The post goes on to describe the next couple of bits of content they will be offering for sale, the quest to repair the Imperial Orrery and a structure called the Wizard's Tower. The update concludes by justifying the high price of add-on content, but admits they are experimenting in finding a price point that reduces sticker shock:
We hope to have The Orrery available for purchase next week. This plugin will cost 150pts on Xbox, and $1.89 on the PC. The Horse Armor Pack has been very popular, and exceeded what we thought it would sell. Despite that, we’re still trying to find the right spot, so we’re putting a much larger plugin out for less than the last one and we'll see what happens. Your feedback as we move forward in this is invaluable. Tell us what you want to see, how much of it, and what it might be worth to you. No, don’t say you want it free, because these plugins take a surprising amount of time to create, polish, and test (much more then Morrowind's).

I finally got around to getting Umbra, must say I'm a bit disappointed. At my current stats, Umbra is doing 18 damage, the Chorrol sword does 15. Sure, +3 is nice, but not that exceptional.

It is when you're facing that 40th level Dremora Kynreaver in his Daedric Plate

True, Umbra isn't the best sword in the game (you can enchant something far better yourself, if you're willing to put up with having to recharge it every ten swings), stock swords that probably goes to Goldbrand.

I enchanted a daedric longsword myself that does 40 extra frost damage per hit, but don't use it that often. I do have one that does 50 extra damage per hit, I only use that against boss type things. It's got Mehrunes Dagon's name written ALLLL over it.
(Normally recharging it is a pain in the ass, but I've got about a hundred Varla stones by now, and I think Mehrunes probably ain't surviving a thousand swings of that baby )

The IQ/education of the average poster here shocks me.

Great start - always go for the personal insults first, that'll make everything else you say that much more believable.

Take the number of dollars you put into it into the number of hours you put into it. At 150 hours at 50 bucks, that's 3 hours per dollar.

Right, so there's no such thing as subjective value. If I spent 10 hours playing Tetris because I'm bored, and there's nothing else to do, that's the same 'value' as 10 hours playing a game I find much more entertaining.

And thanks for inventing a number. I guess everyone has put 150 hours in, so it works fine.

You show me another video game that has that kind of quality.

I've put in a lot more time on many, many games. UT2K4, Civ IV, GTA:SA, heck even Hoyle Card games.

I won't pretend to know WHEN "horse armor" was first mentioned as an example of an official mod, but it was certainly pre-2006. That means any user-made mod is indeed a rip. Do you guys honestly think it wasn't? Therefore... there's not a single thing wrong with it being pulled.

Wait, so you're saying that simply because Bethesda (in your opinion) announced that they were going to make a "horse armor" mod, it's fine for them to pull anyone else who made one? And you were insulting our intelligence.

Umbra is weightless, yes. Goldbrand isn't, in fact it's damn heavy at 52lbs. Then again, what the hell is a mage doing with a sword?

Hey, we all need something to use when we run out of Magicka points.

I do like the armour that 'Umbra' was wearing tho'. It's nice to have a full matching set like that for display.

Second of all... the horse armor was planned a long time ago. It was known to anyone who had a remotely passing interest in the game. I won't pretend to know WHEN "horse armor" was first mentioned as an example of an official mod, but it was certainly pre-2006. That means any user-made mod is indeed a rip. Are they weightless as well? That's the main reason I like the sword so much, it's great for a mage character who hasn't really focused on strength. The elven longsword I was using before was something like 35 weight (I think), so that frees up a fair amount of space.

As for that sword, Bhruic, yeah it's pretty decent. Pales in comparison to Umbra and Goldbrand, but it's nice for the early game.

I figured my shots from the shadows started a riot and they began killing each other since I was undetectable

Actually, the game cheats when you sneak attack something. It will ALWAYS see you, no matter where you are. You can check this pretty easily, simply move away into darkness beyond line of sight, and your icon will STILL stay bright, because it still knows where you are.

There are several "Better Sneaking" mods that fix this.

As for those goblins, I think I know which mine you're talking about, I think there's two tribes of goblins involved, who attack each other.

another Imperial Forrester Guard. The two of them shot at each other for over 5 minutes before one finally killed the other. No other bodies in the area, absolutely nothing to explain why they decided to use each other for target practise.

They're fighting over a deer, if you'll believe that, I've seen the same thing

And yes, the AI behaves weirdly if you attack someone, often they will then gang up on the poor schlep defending himself. It's a faction bug, I'm sure.

I'd bet the dark elf was labeled as an evil character and that is why after you initiated the attack the other NPCs chose your side and helped kill him and then let you be.

I have seen a forester in the distance and was not sure who he was so I shot him with an arrow from so far away he couldn't see or detect me (in stealth mode, lvl 99 now). Then I heard the fighting going on... so I sneak up close to find two foresters fighting it out. I just assumed since one was attacked and had no idea it was me who fired the arrow he attacked the closest target... his friend. A bit broken but interesting none the less.

I see more and more thieves/pickpockets try their trade in broad daylight, in sight of others... they get caught and the melee begins. Usually a couple guards but on occasion a couple civilians and if close by a guard will join the chase. If in the open (outside town) the thief usually runs like hell when he finally nears death. But inside the city walls the fight is over much quicker in most cases.

A week or so back I went into a mine and of course it was a goblin stronghold. Inside one of the larger caverns there were approximately a dozen goblins. They were on the edge of my draw distance and a few would pass in and out of view. As I began taking them out one (or two at a time if they charged) I must have started a riot because I had no idea there were that many over there. I think I killed maybe half a dozen tops but then when I closed in to sort through the loot I found nearly a dozen bodies most stacked on top of each other. Including a shaman. I figured my shots from the shadows started a riot and they began killing each other since I was undetectable.

I replayed that mine a couple times and they fought it out every time. Only thing that changed was the number of rioters. The patrol would spot me more times than not but most of the crowd remained in melee combat against each other with me firing arrows from the shadows a safe distance away.

Oh, I don't really mind. I just found it quite amusing. The guards come rushing to defend the civilians, and end up killing them all (and each other) instead.

Instead, they all began fighting amongst themselves. It was a big melee, 5 guys (1 of them had already died) fighting it out. Finally, 1 guard emerged victorious, at which point he did the "pay/fight/jail" stuff.

I've had that happen several times, it's just one of the quirks of the game.

In an attempt to co-opt this as the generic Oblivion thread...

Has anyone noticed the AI doing some rather bizarre things? I had 3 weird experiences in my last session. First off, I was rather bored, so I chucked some lightning at a guard to have some fun killing people. Then I summoned a wraith to play with them (I was up some stairs, so they couldn't get to me immediately). A bunch of people (about 3 guards, 3 civilians) ended up fighting the wraith. Finally the wraith vanished, and I expected to get hit by the guards. Instead, they all began fighting amongst themselves. It was a big melee, 5 guys (1 of them had already died) fighting it out. Finally, 1 guard emerged victorious, at which point he did the "pay/fight/jail" stuff.

Second oddness - I was in a tavern, and I was waiting for someone to show up (quest related). Got bored again, and there was this one dark elf that wouldn't talk to me. So I pulled out the sword and attacked him. He, of course, immediately hostiled me and attacked back. At which point everyone else in the bar attacked him (and killed him). No one else attacked me, or seemed annoyed with me at all.

The third one was the weirdest, I was enroute to a quest spot. A bandit attacked me along the way, I got the whole 'combat music' going, heard the arrows, found and killed him. Music went back to the nice traveling theme. But I could still hear arrows being fired. So I went in that direction, and found an Imperial Forrester Guard shooting, so I assumed there was another bandit in the area. But still, strangely, no change in music. So I look around, and I finally find what he's shooting at - another Imperial Forrester Guard. The two of them shot at each other for over 5 minutes before one finally killed the other. No other bodies in the area, absolutely nothing to explain why they decided to use each other for target practise.

The part about this that confuses me, however, is the fact I'd never run into anything like those before. Sure, I'd accidentally hit friendlies in combat and had them hostile me, but never anything like that. So was it just a flukey session? Anyone else seen the AI behave as strangely?

Ah, ok, that makes more sense then.

Yeah, there are a lot of good mods out there. I'm pretty attached to my current char (my 3rd so far), so I'm not going to be using any of the "must restart" ones. But there are a lot of ones that don't need to, so those are good. I especially like walking around with a flaming sword.

BTW, found a nice way to get a really decent sword early on. SST: In Chorrol, there's a quest you can get about two twin brothers. You end up having to clear their family estate of 3 ogres - it's not that hard to do. After you do that, a dark elf will approach you, and tell you about this job their father was supposed to do that he reneged on (and later died). He wants you to do it. Turns out that the job was to steal this sword. Once you get it from this ogre cave, you are supposed to either turn it over to the dark elf, or someone in Chorrol castle. But the beauty of it is that you can just keep it. For me, an elven long sword was doing 7 damage. This does 10. But the real kicker is that because it's a quest item, it's weightless. And it's considered magic, so you can hit stuff like ghosts with it. Eventually, I'm sure, I'll return it to someone when I get something better, but for now, it's a great sword to use.

Why make it sound like those are our only options?

I meant if you're completely opposed to the concept of micropayments. That no matter how much something costs, you will never EVER purchase something through it. I'm pretty convinced that this is the way the industry is going. Hell, MS built their entire new console around the concept, and while they may not write the most efficient code, they do tend to have a pretty good idea of which way the marketplace goes.

So IF PC games eventually switch to this type of concept, and person X doesn't like it at all, those ARE really his only options. Either get onboard, or stop playing.

To be honest, there are several scenarios that would make me simply stop playing games altogether. Micropayments in an extreme form (ie, you get a brutally limited base game and then have to buy all the quests and items etc) would, but episodic content taken in the direction that Valve and Ritual are wanting to take it probably will too. I'm not forking over 20 bucks for a 3 hour game. (Notice how Valve's episode 1 smartly says FOUR to SIX hours, rather than THREE to SIX hours, after all the negative backlash against Ritual for it?)

I need more sunshine too, anyways

Btw, the amount of Mods out already for Oblivion is truly, truly staggering. I'm gonna start over with a new character with some levelup mod and an overhaul mod, and it's taken me the better part of a day just to marginally index which mods there are. Holy crap...

Also i do not accept that a developer saying that to have combat from a horses back would take a team of programers and testers xxx hours while a modder can do it in two weeks is a contradictory situation. Consider; a modder can do whatever and upload it onto a community with a text file saying he takes no responsibility for anything, anything B releases is held to a slightly higher standard i think. I mean do you really think that a single programmer who has worked on Ob for 2/3/4 years could not make such a mod faster than a 3rd party modder? of course they could, but could they release it as an official B mod? No, it would need to be planned, balanced and throughly tested.

Um, no. Mount & Blade isn't a "mod" and Armagan isn't a "modder." It's a full indie game in development and in close connection with the community, purchasable for real money. And you'd better believe the combat is tested and works great - it's the focus of the game (hence the name).

See for yourself.

Not really. You've never played around with the construction set, have you? I don't think you know how these things interact; what you're suggesting is false.

That's great, if it is. Obviously I haven't looked into it much, I just saw that as a possibility, hence my concern.
