Ships Ahoy - Xpand Rally

TotalGaming.net announces that Xpand Rally will cross the North American finish line online before retail, as the racing game is now available digitally, a few days before its appearance in stores:
TotalGaming.net Finishes First in Retail Race for Xpand Rally

Stardock Entertainment is excited to announced that the upcoming Topware Interactive racing title, Xpand Rally, will be available for purchase on TotalGaming.net on April 1, ahead of the game's retail release in North America. Xpand Rally is a breathtaking game that gives fans the true-to-life experience of driving powerful rally cars amidst photorealistic sceneries. Realistic weather effects, rolling hills and animated scenery all add to game's visual perfection. Xpand Rally also features highly detailed models of modern rally cars and handling physics developed with the help of rally sport professionals which further enhance the realism of driving experience.

Stardock's successful TotalGaming.net online game-distribution service is the first retailer to supply this highly anticipated title to fans, which is a testament to the increasing popularity of digital distribution services. TotalGaming.net members will be able to purchase the title standalone for $19.99 or for two tokens.

I have written Brian's company about that very issue, and the response I got was that its games are supposedly the complete retail releases without the disc-based copy-protection not bastardized versions with hardware-tied copy-protection like Trymedia/Trygames.com. However, I have yet to order a game from TotalGaming.net so I have not verified that claim.

So, is Totalgames related to Trygames/Trymedia ? The problem with Trygames/Trymedia is that patches won't work with the online distro versions. They claim that they make their own versions of patches which will work with the online distros but this is rarely if ever the case.

Do future patches work with Totalgaming's versions ? If not, does Totalgaming adapt their own ?

Another problem with Trygames/Trymedia is that thier versions often won't let you play online with people who have the store bought versions. What about Totalgames?

Neither Chrome: SpecForce or Xpand Rally's full versions available from TotalGaming.net use StarForce or any other DRM.
That is good to hear, Brian. I will definitely checkout your company's offerings and system as I have been looking at getting those two games.

Uhh, if you had bothered to finish the guy's post before frantically hitting that reply button you would've noticed he came to the same conclusion, leading me to believe your other arguments against Steam are based on only half of what people say.
Actually moron if YOU had bothered to read his post you would see that I am right and that my interpretation of his comments is correct. Look at the end of his post where he writes "Online distro (whoever offers it): Good". That certainly implies that he likes Steam since he did not single-out Stardock as "good." "Whoever offers it" means any online distribution method from anyone of which Steam certainly qualifies. In addition by claiming that Steam works basically the same as Stardock's system yet does not get the same praise from users, he is suggesting that such resentment of Steam is misguided. He's wrong, but that is what he wrote.

YOUR post is a classic example of a mindless knee-jerk reaction to anything negative I write about your precious Steam.

I see they have the Earth 2150 Trilogy for $10. Pretty good price; too bad the only one I need is Lost Souls though, otherwise I'd buy it.

Note - their TotalGaming.net online game-distribution service works a whole lot like Steam,
Based upon what I have read about Stardock's system, it does NOT work like Steam at all when it comes to actually running games, e.g. no online authentication and mandatory updates are necessary just to play the games even if the PC is online. That is why it gets much more love from users.

This IS kind of weird. Also strangely poetic. Dumping Starforce to go with a distributor that uses no protection. Might end up picking this up with some of the extra tokens available after buying GalCiv 2.

Specforce and Xpand Rally didn't exactly sell gangbusters in Europe so they probably had nothing to lose by trying something different.

FWIW Xpand Rally is quite good if you're into Rally-style racers (though I won't play one until they have a feature where you can backhand your navigator when he starts getting annoying). Specforce is an aquired taste. If you hated Chrome you probably won't care much for SpecForce either (though it is a bit faster paced and easier to figure out).

No Boxes. No Waiting. No DRM.
Your Game, Your Way. Anytime, Anywhere
very nice, kudos to Stardock for another non-DRM game, and one that's available via download. Note - their TotalGaming.net online game-distribution service works a whole lot like Steam, which also doesn't use starforce yet gets a lot less luv.

Moral - DRM: Bad. Online distro (whoever offers it): Good

I don't think it's that uncommon to see Starforce in one region but not another, since it's a publisher decision and in most cases smaller games don't see the same publisher handling different regions. European publishers seem to use it a lot, I think.

Assuming they do remove starforce, wouldn't that be the 2nd title to have it removed for NA release recently? I hope the trend continues, especially after they posted those torrent links... that kind of behavior is really unacceptable, and didn't prove anything as you can find torrents for just about every sf protected game out there.

First, as with Chrome Specforce from this same publisher I find it hard to believe that it would pay to incorporate Starforce into a game selling for $20 even though the European version of the game had it. Second, Chrome Specforce is also available via Stardock.

Wait. What? Stardock. As in GalCivII? As in no copy protection, especially not starforce?

But Xpand Rally uses Starforce. At least, the former release (I assume that wasn't a NA release). So will NA be infected with it or not? Interesting.

Edit: from the totalgaming.net site:

"No Boxes. No Waiting. No DRM.
Your Game, Your Way. Anytime, Anywhere."

Even more interesting. Watching this for any info.
