Returning RTS Tease

A blurb on Command and Conquer DEN (thanks Ant) follows-up on their disappointment that no C&C-related announcements emerged from GDC by posting a blurb from the current PC Gamer magazine that teases an upcoming announcement of the return of a prominent RTS franchise. Naturally enough they express hopes this will be the C&C news of their dreams, though there are other franchises that could be covered by this announcement:
PC Gamer: "Imagine, if you will, an RTS franchise - a hugely popular one that's been out of the lime-light for a while. No, not that one, the other one. Yes, that's it. Now imagine picking up the June issue of PCG and seeing that we've got a world exclusive scoop on the new game in the series. Wouldn't that be glorious?"

My only problem with Star Craft was with some of the people I'd play against.

Ie:
Zerg Rush

Or building only Pylongs and a HUGE Protoss Carrier Fleet

I'm not saying they were unbeatable, just annoying.

I doubt it will be Star Craft 2. But I would LOVE IT if it were.

Hi Duc,

>published by microprose and designed by mythos games, aka the
>gollop brothers, maybe you were thinking of Alpha Centauri?

Yes, the X-Com games were published by Microprose, and the
original few were designed by the Gollop Brothers. However,
the later X-Com games did not have any Gollop involvement at
all. The brothers left Mircoprose and formed Mythos Games.
(they did not part on good terms)

Since then, it has been reported (a while back, before
Sid Meyer's Pirates had been officially announced) that
Firaxis had bought several properties from Microprose,
including X-Com... hence the reference to Sid Meyer.

Ugh I forgot to mention one of the best RTS's as Homeworld 1 and 2. Damn those were the best most professionally done RTS's. So unique! Ok so:

Best RTS's of all time:
TA, HomeWorld, Total War Series, C&C and Starcraft.

My money is on a new Total Annihilation or possibly Homeworld 3.

Starcraft 2 is too good to be true.

True it could easily be Red Alert, but that is a spin off of C&C and shouldn't really count. But that is probably what is going to happen. Weak.

I'd love to see a new RA. With the pace and micromanagement of Generals, it could be great. Though, I'd hope that they wouldn't make turtling as easy as it was in RA2.

Sid Meier? As far as I can remember the XCOM/UFO games were published by microprose and designed by mythos games, aka the gollop brothers, maybe you were thinking of Alpha Centauri?

Either one I'd be delighted to see a sequel so you have my full support, maybe they could produce some sort of crazy hybrid.

I wouldn't be surprised if more people are playing SC right now than all of the C&C universe games combined.

South Korea doesn't count

Much as I want it to be Starcraft 2, after reading some othe other comments I'm thinking it'll end up being "Red Alert 3". I recall hearing that they were making it some time ago, but no further news.

I'm thinking either Jagged Alliance or (I hope!) X-COM.

RTS, not TBS.
(real time, not turn based)

JA is coming back, in an ultrashoddy form.
X-COM... who knows. We all want Sid Meier's, but I still doubt he has the rights.

As for popularity, I've seen more than a few articles describing StarCraft as one of the most popular games in Korea still.

I had no interest in SC Ghost, but I'd be right into another SC RTS like a rat up a drainpipe.

Edit because I failed to read what I was responding to... doh!

Top two best selling RTS games have to be Starcraft and the C&C series.

The best two RTS games ever made are Total Annihilation and the Total Wars series.

Seeing that we already know about Total War Medeval 2 and Supreme Cummander that leaves two.

A franchise that has been out of the limelight for awhile? Starcraft as Generals came out just a couple years ago.

My money, my vote, StarCraft 2

I thought Starcraft sucked for some reason.
