Battlefield 2142 Update

The Battlefield 2 Website (thanks Planet Battlefield and Ant) spills some more beans about the just-confirmed Battlefield 2142:
Hi BF fans,

Today we have some really big news to share with you. The more sniper-eyed of you out there will probably already know, but we're currently hard at work developing "Battlefield 2142", which is scheduled for release this Autumn. As you'll have guessed, this is a departure for the BF series as we're going into the future - something that a lot of you wanted to see happen in the BF universe. We're creating a ton of cool features that you won't have seen in any BF before, including cloaking devices, mines that follow you, awesome new rifles, guns and grenades, and of course, MECHS! We're developing this here in DICE Stockholm while the DICE Canada studio will be hard at work on a 1.3 update for Battlefield 2, as well as the Armoured Fury Booster Pack.

There'll be an "official" press release later on this week but we know that you guys need to know first. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on how 2142 is coming along.

The BF2142 Team

P.S. Snoken - vi har sett fram emot Mine 2 och kan lugnt säga att vi inte blev besvikna!

I'm rooting for Quake Wars for many reasons. I guess the good news is that we will have 2 futuristic tactical games to choose from this fall. Can't complain about that.

I really hope id makes sure Quake Wars is up to par. I've about lost my decade+ old fanboyism for them in recent years.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

Guys, ANOTHER booster pack??? Dice can SHOVE IT!

BF2 itself is, apart from the astronomical loading times and other bugs, still playable. The Special Forces expansion isn't.

So lemme tell you what happened. Instead of caring about their product and their customers they started work on this Quake Wars ripoff as soon as possible, putting some other team with no experience with the code to work on the expansions to milk the released game breaking a gazillion things in the process and lowering performance even further. A new game so soon while your previous still isn't properly done is just ridiculous, but hey, gotta maximise that profit right?

In all honesty, the worst mistake I made recently was to buy their Special Forces expansion pack.

No more money from me, fuckers!

Looks like EA is getting onboard with the whole "Episodic content" thing, except they are going to charge the same price for each episode as they do for a full game.

I for one refuse to pay new game prices for an expansions worth of material.

I wish that Quake Wars delivers all that we hope for (Support, anyone?) so that EA/DICE really get a kick in the ass.

It's a feature, not a bug! ...must have snuck in from the BF2142 code

And you'd think that by now their copy & paste routines would be working to perfection.

I was hoping for the announcement of a cool new tech that allows select players to mask the team they're playing for.

Oh wait, that one was already in BF2. My bad :p

You figured it out! I knew it felt familiar -- it's the spy pack from Tribes Renegades or spy disguise from QWTF/TFC. It's a feature, not a bug! ...must have snuck in from the BF2142 code.

DICE's Canadian development center are also working on a "Booster Pack" and "Special Forces" expansion due to be released after the first patch of BF 2142.

BF 2142: Special Forces will be based on a pitch black map with no lighting whatsoever, the framerate is said to be outstanding.

BF 2142 booster pack will feature the same maps you are used to except the buildings are randomly placed.

They will be also bundled with some ATI graphics cards and come with 1 free Milky Bar.

Ant, thanks for the enlightenment -- not sure why I didn't think to google "Mine 2". Anyway, I also got a chance to see "Mine 1" -- funny shit, especially the Lion King/Last Samurai/Braveheart/Madagascar scene. I busted out laughing when "I like to move it" came on.

You need to get your head examined if you were at all impressed by that weak ass trailer.

This game is canned garbage. It looks like a freaking mod for BF2 fer chrissakes. There's no way this game can compete with Quake Wars.

maybe you have me to blame for the "horrible state of gaming" and the "nazi-esque tactics of EA"... but seriously. i'd rather enjoy the game and stfu.

People like you are the reason why EA is getting more and more successful while releasing more and more junk where the real good games are almost disappearing.

Eh, melodramatics aside, it just comes down to personal preference. I like playing BF2 and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I certainly don't like EA and am becoming less and less of a fan of DICE, but the game itself stands apart IMO. Now this next rendition of BF I won't buy, I don't care for futuristic battlefields and prefer to keep that area in the modern day (I don't much care for WW2 games anymore, so the I didn't get into the first BF2). But

Please continue buying EA's yearly releases instead of supporting companies which still care somewhat for their games and releasing patches to fix games (not to break them) and don't try to milk their franchises to death.

Oh, there was as span of almost three months I didn't play BF2. Some stupid decisions to make some weapons weaker/ineffective or just plain plain f*ck up some of the areas of the game that didn't need modification didn't set too well with me. The last round of patches were at least set in the right direction. Still have a quite a ways to go yet.

And here i was thinking EA has released no less than 3 patches designed to round out gameplay mechanics and even level the playing field, at the request of most of its user base.

And all of those patches have introduced more bugs (in some cases severe bugs), and those patches didn't always fix what they were intended to. Yeah, they're supporting it, but their support is utter crap.

Then again, i can't imagine updating a popular game with real time stat collection and global updates to be difficult, i mean, right? Its so much easier to sit on my heels and complain.

Unreal Tournament was released in 1999 and had stat collection. It was patched numerous times (all optional patches) without the difficulties BF2 has had. What's your point?

In the end you don't do anyone a favour (including yourself) by buying EA games and the result will be a further detoriation of the gaming market which was a its peak only 4-5 years ago.

Additionally, they have announced work on an upcoming patch, further content additions, which almost sounds like continued support to me.

You'd begin to think that a company profits from fucking games up, because we all know that upset players = profit.
