Ships Ahoy - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

We've been watching for an official shipping announcement with the no-brainer news that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is in stores, but it seems the PR folks are too caught up in playing Bethesda Softworks' eagerly anticipated RPG sequel to write one. With the release date on the game's product section listed as yesterday, e-tailers like Gamestop listing the game as now shipping, and the game available for the bandwidth-happy on places like Direct2Drive, we don't need a safe or a press release to fall on us to say that the game is now available. If the official announcement ever does show up, it will be added here.

Todd: I've found that changing bDefaultFOV in the ini file makes the UI smaller and take up less space, however it messes up the mouse positions.

Setting fov via console does not do this.

I tell you back in my day when we had Ultima 7 we had to read dammit, we didn't have no Avatar and Lord British actually talk to us, WE HAD TO PAY ATTENTION!! *waves his cane around*

And games came with 700 page manuals, and you didn't even DARE touch the damn floppy disks until you had read EVERY SINGLE PAGE! TWICE!

Ahh, the good old days

I pay 44.95 for my FiOS 15mb connection and love it. Better yet, I now have FiOS TV here and was able to get rid of the <passion>hated</passion> Cox cable I had earlier.

I was up too late yesterday playing Oblivion for the 360, which is usually a very good sign. I've done a little bit of exploring, but mostly I've been doing the main story line (closed the first Oblivion gate). I'm playing as a thief/bowist. I find that these type of characters are generally harder to play in RPGs, but I haven't had any difficulty so far. As someone mentioned earlier, the 3x sneak attack (from a distance, with a bow) is sweet. Although I like playing as a bowist, it's going to end up frustrating me on the 360 because I hate aiming with an analog stick; it would be much better with a mouse.

Surprisingly to me, I'm not as impressed with the graphics as I thought I would be. They're very good, but I'm just not blown away (like I was with Morrowind). For example, there are times when you're talking to someone and their face is completely washed out by the HDR lighting: just a bright, glowy, orange blob in the middle of the screen. I often see seams (not texture, but polygon) on the buildings. Morrowind seemed to have a much more interesting landscape. I get tired of looking at trees all the time :). On the other hand, some of the effects are awesome, like when walking up to an oblivion gate.

The tombs and things in Morrowind were tiny, not so in Oblivion. I spent an hour and a half going through a dungeon (not the tutorial one) and I didn't even take one of the branches. It's definatly a huge game that will keep me busy for a long while to come.

I enjoy it, but it's not as good as what I [probably impossibly] expected.

If anyone is interested, these guys seem to be doing a lot of work figuring out the .ini file and have had quite a lot of luck so far making the drawing distances and grass showing longer (at a framerate hit)...

It's probably just me that didn't bother reading the manual, but I stumbled on the ability to teleport to places of interest on the map screen. It was after several hours of trying to run everywhere. Maybe mentioning it will help someone else.

Loving it so far.

Well, after having the D2D people direct me to a different download site I finally got the game downloaded and installed about 6 hours ago, this is my first break from playing it.

Hot damn, so far it's just jaw-droppingly good. The only things I could nit-pick are the stupid icons the game seems to prefer as labels, the grass pop-in issue, and the slight stuttery "constant-load" nature of horseback riding. But compared to everything that is just fucking perfect I'm not complaining. Melee and spell combat is just wonderful, the graphics are in general great and occasionally unbelievably great, and the core RPG elements seem to be cut and pasted from the previous ES games, which is a good thing.

I haven't done any of the main quest yet either, but I've cleaned out three dungeons I just stumbled upon.

So far it looks like BG2 and PS:Torment are going to get a run for their money for best RPG ever.

EDIT: One thing no one has mentioned yet, but the sound is great too, I really like the sound of sneaking while wearing heavy armor, and the sounds of melee combat, especially blocking and critical hits.

You kids and your closing gates! According to the game clock when I saved and exited a few minutes ago I was 11 hours and 41 minutes into the game. I have yet to drop off the amulet!

Loving this game so much. Brings back so many good morrowind memories with extra fuckin' goodies and polish. The only gripe I have [which surprisingly isn't graphics] is the slight console feel I get, especially from the menus as others have mentioned. I'm amazed at how well my computer runs the game at medium settings... But hell who am I kidding they could use the same graphics as morrowind but keep the oblivion gameplay and I would still love it.

So if I am not doing the main quest at all what am I doing? Diggin' in dungeouns, fighting in the arena, going on a boat ride, doing misc missions and working my way up in the thieves guild.

Is it just me or is there only 1 or 2 guys who do all the voice work for all the 'african-americans' in the game?

3 Gates shut so far, and more often then not I feel like an errand boy still

I really wish they would add some sort of random attack/encounter to the instant-travel. I think one of the cooler things in Morrowind was going from A to B, and finding something in the process that was something ankin to 'hmm what's that over there?'

Also have anyone encountered the Dark Elf singing about Cliff Racers?

I have had one crash while loading a new zone but that was after about five or six hours of play. And one system reboot when I left the game paused and went and had dinner... most likely it was that crappy MS Anti Spyware Beta which pops about 6pm to run a scan on the entire system.

I have also noticed some popping of environment (rocks, bushes, etc) mostly while running out of town on my stolen horse. But a bit while running on foot also. This lizard is pretty face on land but damn under water he is a star.

You might not have to dump her, but I'd seriously think twice about giving her more money!

You don't just lose a hunnerd bucks! So she's kept it or spent it. And then she lied about it. And she's jealous too.

He should dump her before she slits his throat in the night for dream-smiling. Besides he seems like a nice guy and shouldn't have any trouble finding somebody else. I know for a fact Hump is up for some cock rubbing!

If anyone else like me was getting slightly nauseous after plaing the game for a while, bring down the console and type "fov 90"

The default fov is 75 (!) You may have to toggle it back and forth once or twice in order for it to stick. Try it even if you aren't getting sick; it makes the world feel that much more open.

Don't set defaultfov from your oblivion.ini file. It for some reason makes all the menus smaller (nicer to read, actually) but it messes up the mouse positions.

Just downloaded it from Direct2Drive at 480 kb/sec, installed and running on my laptop. Damn. Talk about a great looking game that runs fast. Granted it won't output to my monitor with any expecation of decent performance, but hell, I don't mind; it's a damn fun game so far. I also can't run as high some people, but it is perfectly playable at 1024:768. The outdoors get little slippery at times, and there's some major popping of the environment going on, but it's not show stopping. Ah, I'm kind of leery about getting further and having the game fall flat, but so far it's definitely blowing Morrowind out of the water. I never did finish the first one, I hope my assassin is still fun to play at later levels and the tougher dungeons.

I LOVE this game.

Morrowind was supposed to be this giant "Do whatever you want!" game, but it always felt a bit lacking and lifeless to me.

This is the game that I will just putz around and grow skills or make money or explore or acquire better items or...or...or...

This is much, much more inviting than any of the other games.

Sneaking around in the dark,
Mighty Argonian Ray And his neon red skin.
