EA Pockets DICE

This DICE press release announces that EA's and DICE's relationship will be culminated in a full merger between the two companies. EA was previously a majority shareholder in the Swedish developer (story), and now EA is to acquire the remaining stake in DICE. Since that press release has a weird bit about how it isn't to be disseminated in the U.S. (huh?), here's a bit from a news story on the announcement:
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Mar 17, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Electronic Arts Inc. and Digital Illusions today announced plans for EA to complete its acquisition of Digital Illusions CE (DICE). The companies have unanimously agreed to a merger proposal through which EA will acquire the remaining outstanding shares of DICE, effectively making DICE a fully integrated studio within EA.

In connection with the merger, DICE shareholders will receive SEK 67.50 per share in cash, representing a premium of 30% to DICE's closing price on March 16, 2006. EA currently owns approximately 68 percent of the shares of DICE. EA also holds warrants, which entitle EA to purchase an additional 2.3 million shares. On a fully diluted basis, EA owns approximately 74 percent of the outstanding capital and votes in DICE.

The merger is subject to approval by a 2/3 majority vote of shares at the Annual General Shareholders Meeting of DICE, which is scheduled for May 24, 2006. The merger is subject to customary closing conditions and is anticipated to close in September 2006.

geez, replace "DICE" with "Kesmai" and you have the exact same scenario from back in 2001 when EA broke up one of the most experienced MMOG developers there was and then shut down a little game called Multiplayer Battletech: 3025 that had 20,000 active testers before the game even went live.

That was what made me really despise EA. I had been looking forward to that game ever since I first saw the closing screen of MPBT:Solaris.

Oh great - now EA will kill much-needed patches for DICE games just like they did for NFS: Most Wanted.

Thanks EA.

I never got why DICE gets treated like saints and victims.

They're powerful enough to pull their own weight. I'd blame them as much as EA, if not more, for any faults in the games, as well as for decisions about new projects.

I was never a BF fan, though. I didn't play the original until last year (by then it was very dated) and really didn't like BF2.

I do have the booster pack. Last night I was playing the base game and decided to join a server with a booster map. The game shut down and restarted before joining the Booster server. Is there some magical configuration change I need to make so that it will load everything at once?

It doesn't say much for their netcode or engine design for the game to accidentally mark a friendly as an enemy.

I've hosed a number of my own team that way. Then get punished for the team kill. It's not their fault they were mistagged, but come on EA/DICE, but but let's get this problem fixed already.

Also noting: Red Tag Bug is worse than it was before

Wow, they still haven't fixed that? That's probably the worst bug that I've ever seen in any game. It doesn't say much for their netcode or engine design for the game to accidentally mark a friendly as an enemy.

The last page in the latest PCGamer (lousy rag btw) mentions "an insanely popular PC franchise [that] is shifting gears and moving into a totally new setting, complete with bipedal mechanized units."

My first thought was Battlefield and now I'm starting to really believe it.

Quake Wars is still gonna own it though.

Actually, DICE is rumored to be working on Battlefield 2142. There is a leaked video over at YouTube that shows some supposed game footage. Looks friggin' awesome.

You confusing that with the MGS4 footage.

I picture the inside of an EA dev studio looking almost exactly like the mines in Temple of Doom.

I dunno, they put out Dungeon Keeper II. I think they designed the torture chambers after their studios floors.
