Out of the Blue

Happy Fat Tuesday!

As noted on planet rome.ro, yesterday was the anniversary of the release of QTest (actually I think it was the 24th, but close enough for video games). Unbelievably, the multiplayer test for Quake was released (wait for it...) 10 years ago! Equally unbelievably this was covered here at the time (to my regret lots of older content here was deleted rather than archived). Where does the time go?

R.I.P.: WW II fighter ace Scott dies at 97.

Wow, a full decade already.

I recall QTest (actually the subsequent release of Quake 1) was probably my most anticipated game release of all time. My interest and enthusiasm for game releases has been waning ever since (nothing quite as groundbreaking these days I guess).

I also recall how disappointed I was when QTest finally did come out because it was multiplayer only, and having only dialup and no one to play against. I think it came with 3 different levels and I must have spent an hour in eash, awed by the new 3d engine.

I didn't have a 3d card (I don't know if anyone did), and of the myriad options of screen resolutions available (first game to do this) I don't think I could slog through it at any better than 360x240. Let's see, that was the old 486 DX/2 which has a intel overdrive chip swapped in, bringing it to a whopping 83 (or was it 87) MHz, 8 megs of ram, and 240 MB of hard drive space. And yeah, it was much better (if not required) to quite windows before firing up Quake.

Edit:
About 2 years ago I reinstalled Quake to play though the 2 levels I spent so much time and had so much fun making for it back in those days. Funny how back then I barely had enough PC to run the game, now it doesn't even want to run on current versions of windows.
