The Movies Expansion Confirmed

Computer and Video Games (thanks Frans) has a story confirming recent indications (story) that an expansion for the PC edition of The Movies is in the works, in spite of the cancellation of the console editions of Lionhead's cinema sim. The report says the project has the working title of the Stunts & Effects Expansion Pack, indicating the thrust of the add-on will be to allow you to get in touch with your inner Bruckheimer, perhaps at the expense of your inner Mamet. The story goes on to describe new sets, the ability to create lengthier movies, and a bit on the S&E from the working title:
Alongside new effects like lasers, water effects, smoke and electrical charges, you'll have the power to direct your jaw-dropping set-pieces - with examples like the ability to fire cars off bridges, causing them to burst into flames given. Of course, to achieve these magical movie moments, you'll need to hire top-class stuntmen to do your bidding - maybe even snagging a stunt award in the process.

Yeah I agree tracer, I remember them saying youd post your movies on the net and stuff, but it seems to be all prefab cook cutter stuff.

If they had a level of control for their movie sets that even comes close to rivaling Garry's Mod, this game would truly be great both as a sim and as the machinima tool they advertise themselves as. Even if they just introduced the Havok engine to create their stunts, or lisenced Valve's lip-synching technology.

Stunt Island was a Disney software release, wasn't it? I played the death outta that thing. It was great. In fact, I still have all the install disks. Good times.

Anyone remember Stunt Island? Although it was pretty much limited to creating action films, you could get some really impressive scenes out of it. That was almost 14 years ago...

Just finding the right scenes became a chore, then finding scenes to go with each other became a bigger chore.

Well put. Instead of creating your movie with the scenes provided, you had to tailor your movie to the scenes they gave you.

It was still fun, but limited...

I'll pull out my crystal ball...

They probably had the expansion in the works as part of the original development, and were just waiting to release it sometime after the initial game was released. They probably figured the game was going to be big enough to warrant the expansion, and took the initiative. However, in this case, I doubt it will do much but offset some of their loss (assumed loss, I dont know for sure).

BTW, anyone have real numbers on how much this game cost to develop, and how much it made?

I played the game for a while, and found it amusing enough. However, I really wanted to try out the sandbox mode. And, unfortunately, I thought it was lacking. The more I tried to make a movie, the more I felt limited by the scene selection. Just finding the right scenes became a chore, then finding scenes to go with each other became a bigger chore. It's like I was making a movie on rails: whenever I wanted to get off the rails, the whole thing would fall apart.

They should have just canned the game part and concentrated on the free-form movie making.

I was gonna say, it surprises me a bit there's an expansion forthcoming cus it didn't seem like this did well enough to warrant one.

Hopefully this expansion should help generate interest for the game? It's a long way to reach the fame that The Sims got.
