Stranglehold Announced

It's Tequila Time Stranglehold Info & Screenshots on Voodoo Extreme is the press release announcing development of Stranglehold, an Unreal-engine third-person action game due in Winter 2006. Described as a "spiritual sequel" to Hard Boiled, John Woo's classic action movie, the game will feature Chow Yun-Fat returning as Inspector Tequila in virtual form and Tequila Time, a variation on slow-mo bullet time described as "innovative," perhaps the result of drinking too much tequila. The first preview for the game is on IGN, and here's a bit from the announcement:
Acclaimed action director John Woo presents Stranglehold, a stunning 3rd-person action adventure videogame for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. A "spiritual sequel" to Woo's action masterpiece, "Hard Boiled," Stranglehold redefines the action gaming experience with its acrobatic gunplay, thrilling cinematography, frenetic combat and incredible Massive Destructibility (Massive D). Chow Yun-Fat reprises his signature role as Inspector Tequila, pitting gamers as a take no-prisoners cop waging a personal war with Hong Kong crime lords. Tequila's loyalties to the force are tested when his ex-wife is kidnapped by the Russian mob in Chicago. Tequila struggles to balance his duty to uphold the law with doing what it takes to save his family.

I realise that my mentality is just going to encourage developers and publishers to be more and more derivative and produce more sequels than anything, but I couldn't give a toss if this looks, feels, and plays just like a Max Payne 2 TC set in Asia with decent voiceovers. I'd lap it up. MP2 is still the most fun combat I've had in a game, with the possible exception of FEAR.

Regarding Woo and Doves:

"I love doves. I am a Christian. Doves represent the purity of love, beauty. They're spiritual. Also the dove is a messenger between people and God... When I shot The Killer, these two men, the killer and the cop, they work in different ways, but their souls are pure, because they do the right thing. In the church scene, I wanted to bring them together. I wanted to use a metaphor of the heart. I came up with doves —they're white. When the men die, I cut to the dove flying —it's the soul, rescued and safe and also pure of heart. So the dove became one of my habits: I used it in Hard Boiled, Face/Off, and in Mission: Impossible II"

Damn, isn't that an example of the crazy violent religious thinking? Or maybe I'm just very tired.

...demo, please?

It looks ok, but does not grab me. Looking through IGN's shots, some of the settings could potentially be interesting, but the current in-game shots jst make it seem like Max Payne, but without any of the style.

Hopefully, they are just some bad shots; they are not particularly interesting, but there is a bit of detail.

Having said all that, Max Payne 2 is some of the most fun in gaming I have played in some time - maybe this could be extremely deceiving.
And I HATED Max Payne.
Then again, Max Payne was highly stylistic and F.E.A.R. has p\/\/n3d f.i.r.s.t.-.p.e.r.s.o.n. c.o.m.b.a.t....

Finally playing Myst 5; eagerly awaiting Scratches,
Ray

I guess its an ironic statement, the white dove symbolising peace always flies away in slow motion before an especially brutal action scene.

Considering that 3dRealms refered to John Woo as a source for their inspiration on Max Payne, it's only fitting that Woo would turn around and make a game himself. I am REALLY looking forward to this. Max Payne is still one of my favourite games of all time.

If you ever wondered what Max Payne would be like in an Asain setting, wonder no more!

Seriously though, this sounds like the *exact* same game down to the last feature...
