The Godfather Sequels?

Computer and Video Games (thanks Frans) has word that plans may be in place for sequels to The Godfather even before the mob movie tie-in hits stores. According to the speculative story, they may even make a third installment in the game series (ignoring the object lesson offered by the third The Godfather movie). Word is:
Speaking to BBC News, Godfather executive David DeMartini revealed that he plans to work on at least two more Godfather titles, and that he hopes to establish it as one of EA's biggest franchises. "We went into this venture taking into consideration the establishment of a brand new franchise," he said, "Our intention is to make two and three."

I've heard that "The Godfather" is quite lifeless and lacks a soul.

I'm not expecting much myself (will hold out for Mafia II for that), but one thing I've read that intrigues me is that the game actually follows the movie very closely, and really doesn't mess with key scenes at all, so they're all in the game.

Meanwhile, you're not playing one of the key characters in the movie - more of a background personality - so the result is that you frequently find yourself playing along and then suddenly realizing that you're now taking part in one of those classic scenes from the film.. As a fan, I think that could be pretty cool, actually.

..except, of course, for any of the scenes featuring Michael.. Good thing he's not really an important character Or a recognizable personality I'm sure it'll hardly be noticeable

Anyway, as I say, I'm not really expecting much, but I still might give it a whirl if only for the chance to recreate some of those scenes..

"Did I read you correctly? Mafia 2 is on the drawing board!"

Supposedly they've been working on a sequel for a while now, but have been low-profile about it.

Hopefully it will at least equal the brilliance of the first game.

THEY WANT TO MAKE MONEY AND MILK IT! This is just wonderful news. I'll bet they would like to sell 4 or 5 sequels to a game that has yet to be released.

Everyone will understand the logic or folly of his ways soon enough.

The videos look very 'gamey' with colourful floating markers and indicators. A far cry from Mafia's classy simulation of 1930s America.

I've heard that "The Godfather" is quite lifeless and lacks a soul. I was hoping the game was somewhat close to mafia, but I think it's just another "Driv3r".

I don't know all the hearsay bout failures or sequels, I'm just curious to see how the hell (or why for that matter) they're going to translate Godfather over to a game.

No it is more like once they own the planet, they use it as a license to release failure (as in crappy) games. Oh wait, they came to own the planet by releasing crappy games with huge market share.

I love when gamers talk about how a game is a failure before the game is even out.
We're talking about EA... I thought it was a given?

Ummm... yeah.. I guess releasing nothing but failures is how EA has been able to own the planet.

Well Jaenos, it will be a financial success for EA because there are so many pseudo-gamers that really aren't concerned about the quality of their games and just want the graphics and exclusive licenses. It will be a failure for anyone looking for a good game. It's a tragedy that EA has the license to the Godfather movies, pretty much any other publisher would have most definatly made it several times better.

I love when companies talk about sequals before the first game is even out; it's just a sign that marketing has done it's job and that success can be calculated.

Then again, sometimes that doesn't work, and hopefully with EA it all fails.
