Out of the Blue

It's a little wacky here at the BlueTower today, there's someone chopping up our driveway with a jackhammer, creating quite the uproar. This is to upgrade something with our gas main, so the gas will be off most of the day as well. Thankfully it's not that cold out there today, so we hopefully won't freeze before this is all finished.

some freeware thing together with Bart's PE disk

Great tool - I use it at work sometimes. Allows you to mount a NTFS volume and have DOS access to it...

What do you think OEM versions are? All of my copies of XP are just that.

Granted, but it seemed, I dunno. Shoddy. They had another OEM version for 139 that at least came in a box. I'm one of those old fashioned morons that will pay 25 bucks for a box.

Again, I'll recommend Knoppix -- works with XP just fine and it's free. Has backup software and partition resizing/moving/etc, along with a ton of other stuff.

Meh, my buddy has been trying to convince me hard that some freeware thing together with Bart's PE disk will do the Ghost thing too, but you know what? I KNOW how to work Ghost, and I KNOW it works. All the time. I've NEVER had Ghost fail on me, ever. (knock on wood).

So while I could try to figure out how to do the freeware thing, and learn what it needs, and how it does it, and then if it fails, how to fix it, etc, I've recently decided that the hours of time that I need to learn all that shit are more important to me than the 60 bucks it costs me to install ghost and just run the backup.

I'm just not that hardcore anymore.

However, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the advice, which I do. Thanks

Creston

That Royaldiscount 115 bucks one was just a CD and a key

Also picked up a new ghost, since my old version of ghost doesn't work with XP.

Bah, fuck it, I got it from newegg. That Royaldiscount 115 bucks one was just a CD and a key, and while it probably would work, that just still seems kinda fishy to me.

Also picked up a new ghost, since my old version of ghost doesn't work with XP.

Just wondering if anyone has ordered from Royaldiscount before. They've got a ton of endorsements, so I think I may just take a gamble and go for it. It's still 25 bucks cheaper than Newegg.

Heh, that was the first one I listed in my previous post (which you mentioned in one posted before me but typing the same time!)

It is good according to bizrate.com

I didn't even think about Home... It supports, what, up to 2 Gig of memory, right?
I did not know the difference either, so I went and found out!

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx

I would NOT go with XP home, no multi processor support, so you would be limiting the longevity of your purchase. There are like 3 other things I find useful, the rest I would prefer if I could completely remove from my XP install!

*edit*
And to point out to you, no multi-lingual support in home. I know you are not from America so I do not know if that is a biggie for you or not, talking with family back home, etc.

I don't care about not being able to log on to a domain, but there was something with the memory...

Yeah I'm seeing a ton of cheap sites too, but I'm always a bit hesitant to order from a completely new site. If push comes to shove, I'll just get it from Newegg for 140.

Yeah I wasn't planning on actually upgrading *shudder*, but I know that all previous upgrades always allowed you to just put in the install CD of the previous product you owned, and then it would just install the version normally.

It doesn't matter anyways, newegg sells it for 140, and I've found a site called RoyalDiscount.com that sells it for 115. Has anyone ever bought anything from there?

You can get the home for under $100. But the 64bit pro version is like half the price of the normal at most places
.
But www.pricewatch.com I see a couple way cheaper then most.

You would want to look around and inqure about the quality of those sites, as I have never used them and am not endorsing them.

Is the upgrade still just a matter of "as long as you show me the .exe of a previous version, I'll install the full version" thingy?

I think it looks at whats currently installed (OS wise)...

IE even if you had a 2K cd, I don't think it'd let you install on a blank drive. It'll want to upggrade whats already there...

Not sure though. I avoid upgrades as much as I can, ever since I upgraded a friends 95 box to 98, and spent 3 days trying to fix it's fuck ups (and rescue data) afterwards...

Great price, couldn't pass it up, has DVI, free shipping, etc etc. Can't complain. Best deal and monitor I have seen yet. 8ms, 500:1 Contrast, 19", what more could I ask for? Maybe a little better dpi or resolution, but damn I couldn't pass on the price.

I think ViewSonic make some of the best monitors out their. In my expierence spec for spec ViewSonic monitors have always seemed slightly better and lasted forever. Hell, I still have 2 perfectly working extra ViewSonic 17 inch monitors around here.
