Out of the Blue

I mentioned recently that I was suffering from a pain in my ear, which seemed to be somewhere in the canal area. Well it's gone now, though the cure was a bit dodgy. While clowning around, MrsBlue managed to clock me a pretty good one in the ear... not hard enough to be a big problem, unless of course, your ear was already bothering you (MrsBlue seems magnetically drawn to such a vulnerability -- it was Freud who said there are no accidents, right?). After the initial agony subsided, the less severe pain I'd been suffering with went away as well - I think I may have had a zit in my ear that burst. Whatever it was, I'm sure glad that it's over.

The wonders of modern technology are marvelous, no? A backhoe can punch through pretty tough ground, even frozen.
If they can mine diamonds in Siberia where it's regularly -45C for 8 months of the year (and -30 for the other 4)...

The stuff they use up there is just amazing - heated trucks to stop the stuff sticking to them, with 20ft tyres. Awesome stuff. And dynamite... lotsa dynamite

huh, I know 2 people that have it and aren't having issues.
Heh well they must be the only two - check out the EA forums. Make IMDB/Slashdot/Steam forums look like adult discussions between Nobel prize winners Plenty of issues there. Apparently nobody can get half the FMV to work in Red Alert... the oldest game I can play is RA2. The graphics just go glitchy and then it ruins what little immersion 800x600 gives you

Perhaps setting desktop resolution down to 640x480 would help, though I don't think by default the 9800Pro has that on its slider. Fortunately I have a CRT so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

And I'm not sure (though haven't tried) whether you can run C&C in windowed mode. But that's a good idea to try.

Some things I'm just SO used to I can't do anymore. Like, god forbid, right-clicking.
Heh yes, it's amazing how far simple evolution has brought the interface. It's also amazing that when they were developing the game nobody suggested an easier interface. The Age of Empires 3 interface is (IMHO) the best I've come across. But such is evolution. Or intelligent design, whatever.

Found a pretty cool mod for civ4, new civs, units, promotions, graphics and a shit load more features. Someone got all the best mods available and built them into one mega-mod. I am at year 200AD and so far it is pretty sweet, only problem so far is some of the new civs have blank flags.

Sure hope the SDK gets out soon.

what the hell did you expect? a full graphics upgrade to the C&C games?

I'm not faulting Westwood (or EA or whoever). It's all me, I forgot and I don't have any more CRT's lying around anymore.

It's not just that. Some things I'm just SO used to I can't do anymore. Like, god forbid, right-clicking. I know, I know; it's an early game and I can do what I need without it. I'm just SO used to right clicking now that it's usually a second or 2 until I realize why my guys aren't doing what I want.

I'll go back to it later. But for now, eh.

Word to the wise: Don't buy C&C The First Decade until they patch it. The graphics glitches, the FMV not working, the CD checks, no internet play without a lot of fucking about... just don't do it.

Thanks for the heads up...was going to order that!

huh, I know 2 people that have it and aren't having issues.
I am not a fan myself, but everything looks fine.

First off, I use an LCD monitor and I forgot this as I tried running the original C&C; it runs at 640x480. Not too nice looking. To top that off, no multiplayer I can see. Tiberian Sun at least goes to 800x600 so that helps a little, but it crashes on the second level (for me).

Try windowed mode?
Looks better then.

I'm dissapointed at it. It's kind of like watching an old dream die.

What's really sad is I remembered the songs sounded SO MUCH BETTER than they actually do. Sure, some are still neat (Just Do It Up and Hell March) but the rest, eh. I guess I was so used to cheap midi's that when C&C had decent music I was floored.

Zero Hour is alright, but I miss the old Tiberian fields and psuedo-futuristic setting.

I've already uninstalled it. Maybe when a wave of nastalgia sweeps ove rme I'll try again. But for now I'm gonna shelve it.

We just happen to fall below zero like no one's business today and yesterday. I am not a fan of cold, I am not even sure why I have lived in MN my whole life (short period in South Dakota) - but this is crazy. We were very lucky to have a mild winter, but this is just ridiculous.

We got a little taste of that ourselves here in Washington. Not half as bad as you guys, but still, 15 degrees with 30+ mph gusts is nasty, and it's supposed to get down as low as 5 degrees tonight with wind gust up to 45 mph.

I had a nasty ass flu

What amazes me is that in the olden days, you probably would have had to go get an embarrassing ointment to take care of something like that..

Now you just need the swift healing foot of MrsBlue Medicine Ninja crammed up your butt and you're all set!

It's truly staggering sometimes how quickly medical science advances.

Sub-zero temps aren't exactly uncommon up there. My grandmother was buried in Sioux Falls a few years ago... I had a nasty ass flu and couldn't go, but I think I lucked out -- it was 35 below zero the day she was buried. And I think that excluded the windchill.

Now that was an absurdly cold winter for the area.

As I said, we got lucky this year.
I remeber days ebing 34-45 below WITHOUT windchill. sux.

They actually buried her?
Must have had ground warmers or something, usually, they pretend they are going to bury the dead, and then put them in the freezer until the ground thaws.

That is like getting kicked in the nuts and saying out loud, 'eh, no big deal, haven't been kicked in the junk for a good couple years' it just doesn't make sense.

Well, it does if you lived somewhere that people commonly got kicked in the nuts!

Mind you, at the moment it is about -3 WITHOUT the windchill. Says "feels like -28".

Yeah, but it's a dry cold
