Boll Slams Games Industry (Really!)

Uwe Boll bites back on Eurogamer is the you can't make this stuff up story of the day, in which alleged film director Uwe Boll explains where the blame lies for the failings of his game-related cinematic offerings. The problem lies not in the movies themselves, but with the critical gaming press and unsupportive game companies:
Us games journalists, Boll argues, should be pleased that videogame-based movies are getting made at all. "It's tough to convince someone from the studio system to believe in a videogame-based movie. It's way easier to have a great book or to have a comic book [as your source material], because these studio guys, they know Spider-Man, Batman, that kind of stuff."

Boll believes that part of the problem with convincing Hollywood that game movies are a good idea is down to game publishers themselves. He argues that Marvel, for example, are very good at cross-promoting movies based on their properties - whereas videogame companies simply sell off the licence and then forget about it.

A child playing the likes of Bloodrayne especially to the point where they are regarded as found memories doesn't reflect well
Riley, if you have any sembelence of intelligence, you'd realise that he was talking about Alone in the Dark as his 'fond childhood memory'...

Although I do see where you get confused - Seeing as you are still a child, Bloodrayne would class as a childhood memory...

I'm not denying that Wing Commander did suck..I'm just saying it had the largest potential to not suck of all the video game movies I can recall.

cuz seriously...Tomb Raider? Mario Bros? please..garbage in, garbage out

The problem with video game movies is that the directors always try to change them. If they just left the movie with the same premise as the game (and maybe with a better plot, depending on the game) than you could at least game the gamers to enjoy it. But when you change the premise completely (a la Alone in the Dark) you piss off gamers for changing the game and also piss off movie goers for making a shitty movie. Look at Tomb Raider - didn't make too many outrageous changes and it didn't do half bad. Even got a sequel out of that.

The Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros movies, on the other hand...

I thought so too. I won't deny American cinema has its bad movies, but I also believe some people just expect too much out of entertainment sometimes.

That was my point - I hate those two...and I think w/o Prinze, Lillard wouldn't get half the movies he does...

lots of big star names.

Like who?

Jürgen Prochnow is the only one I can think of. Everyone else was nobodies (including Freddie Prinze Jr. and Mathew Lillard... which except for the crappy Scooby-Doo movies would still be nobodies, as far as name recognition).

And I'm sorry... Wing Commander beyond sucked for way more reasons than the "Kilrathi looking like cats".

The Plot sucked, the acting sucked, the dialog sucked, AND the Direction sucked. Gee, go figure that the movie was gonna suck.

Oh that sounds like what we're all talking about.... and what Uwe Boll still doesn't "get".

If you don't already comprehend why parents allowing their children to play mature-rated video games (which by definition are not age appropriate for children) doesn't reflect well upon them as parents, then no amount of further explanation from me or anyone else will make you understand it.

Oh, Riley, you dazzle us all with your lustrous brilliance and simple, repetitious tactic of dismissal. Some facts from those of us who were actually there:

Alone in the Dark was released in 1992.
Ref: http://www.mobygames.com/game/alone-in-the-dark/release-info

The ESRB was not fully developed in 1992, and thus confusing rating systems were in competition until the ESRB become the de facto standard. Most sources cite 1994 as the beginning of the ESRB.
Ref: http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/july03/25smartest/index15.shtml
http://www.gamepro.com/playsmart/about.shtml

And as far as I remember, AitD didn't even have a rating on the box. That was not uncommon for the time.
Ref: http://www.adventureclassicgaming.com/index.php/gallery/image_med/158/

Ergo, were your general trolling comments about someone's failed upbringing by playing violent games valid on the logical grounds of the content of the game [which requires two assumptions - that no children can handle mature content which is in itself an entire debate and that failure in parenting can be attributed to one single act of allowing that mature content, which is flawed logic], they would still be 'moot' as you so eloquently like to say on the grounds that a comprehensive rating system didn't exist at the time - thus providing parents with no easy way to evaluate game content prior to purchase.

I look forward to hearing your typical, dismissive retort.

I still think the Wing Commander movie had a decent shot at being a first 'good' video game movie. It had such potential..lots of big star names.

but OMG did Roberts screw the pooch on that. Pilgrims, Kilrathi look nothing like cats...I mean WTF?

seriously, all he had to do is stick with what we loved about the games and he would have had a slam dunk. Cuz how often is the creator of the games also the director of the movie. But no..he had to take things in a new direction..argh!

So watching the Rock and Karl Urban walk through empty hallways for 58 minutes was a good movie for you?

However, seeing as how we all fall short of your magnificent standard, may we suggest that you depart this planet so unworthy of your wisdom until such a time when we are ready for the glory of your intellect.

And take your fucking shite movies with you.

You know, I run into people like yourself all the time on campus. They're well studied, but are so book learned they forget they should also have interpretation skills. They just won't answer the question. My comprehension is not at question here; that and whether I actually understand the subject isn't the point. I was asking you to clarify what I interpreted to be an overgeneralized statement.

Are you kidding? The Rundown and Be Cool were both quite good movies. At least, I enjoyed them. Doom, on the other hand, kinda sucked imo. It certainly could have been better, anyway. The video game element (after the initial laugh) was cheesy, and the rest of the movie wasn't much better. Admittedly, the plot was at least as good as the plot in the game, but I'm sure you're aware how much that's saying.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the games industry. If a good game can be successful with it's story... then that's all you need to work with to make a successful movie, IF you know what the fuck you are doing... have good script writers, good actors, and good DIRECTION.

Thus far, Silent Hill has been buzzing with good words, with decent actors and a strong enough back story it looks to actually be one of the best game-to-movie adaptation. Of course, Silent Hill also has a damn good story which to build off of in the first place.

I think this quote sums up my position:

At one point, Lorenzo - who made Doom - stated flat out that movies need to be movies and games need to be games. In fact, when asked point blank what he would have done differently could he make Doom again he stated that he would listen less to the audience and game studio and have gone with his gut instinct and made a Sci-fi movie rather than made a game-movie.
