...and yet SOE is going down the tubes. They've managed to botch sure fire francises left and right and destroy games that people used to play. Then he has the gall to talk about "depth" in his games, after being at the head of a company that gutted all the depth out of it's games and seemingly has no plans to stop.
Years ago, RPGs on the PC nearly died. They nearly died because they were becoming cliche, meaningless. They were brought back by Baldur's Gate and Fallout, meaningful stories told in the game. We weren't just generic adventurer killing mobs to level, we were doing something with a greater purpose.
What's funny is that I've just described *every* MMO out there. MMOs have brought gaming backwards, and while I play and enjoy them, I can't say that MMOs offer much that is "revolutionary" besides being in a game with, well, a lot of players. Instead we're doing the most basic and banal tasks. Somehow this is ok, because we're doing it with multiple people.
Multiplayer gaming may become the end-all for gaming, but if it doesn't get off it's laurels and get past Everquest 1 gameplay, there's going to be a lot of backlash and a lot of games tanking. SOE should know that by now. If not, good riddance to them.
