But books are also enjoyed as social activities today — they are traded in book clubs, they are read in classrooms, they are recommended on television and argued about in newspapers. Few books are truly enjoyed as solitary experiences except on a truly momentary level.

So as long as I talk about playing games with someone else, it's a multiplayer game? In that case, I don't think I've ever played a single player game. No wonder it's doomed.

Edit : Raph, singleplayer gaming is not masturbation. Your blog is masturbation. Because the only one enjoying it is yourself.

That's quality

Wow. That is quite an assumption and retarded analogy from the all-knowing Dr.Koster. The act of actually READING the fucking book is....(drum roll)...SOLITARY you stupid fuckface. Apply that theory to any solitary act and it ceases to be solitary?? Riiiiggght.

That whole article was biased-trash. /sigh

Raph Koster is an asshat.

Many people have no interest in mutliplayer/online gaming other than the occasional deathmatch. Playstation 2 did not become the best selling gaming platform because of its great support for MMO gaming.

...and yet SOE is going down the tubes. They've managed to botch sure fire francises left and right and destroy games that people used to play. Then he has the gall to talk about "depth" in his games, after being at the head of a company that gutted all the depth out of it's games and seemingly has no plans to stop.

Years ago, RPGs on the PC nearly died. They nearly died because they were becoming cliche, meaningless. They were brought back by Baldur's Gate and Fallout, meaningful stories told in the game. We weren't just generic adventurer killing mobs to level, we were doing something with a greater purpose.

What's funny is that I've just described *every* MMO out there. MMOs have brought gaming backwards, and while I play and enjoy them, I can't say that MMOs offer much that is "revolutionary" besides being in a game with, well, a lot of players. Instead we're doing the most basic and banal tasks. Somehow this is ok, because we're doing it with multiple people.

Multiplayer gaming may become the end-all for gaming, but if it doesn't get off it's laurels and get past Everquest 1 gameplay, there's going to be a lot of backlash and a lot of games tanking. SOE should know that by now. If not, good riddance to them.

single-player is to media what masturbation is to sex
so many one-liners, so little time.
