Any opinions on the 7800GS? I wouldn't mind hanging onto my AGP system for awhile yet. But paying more for fewer pipelines (16 as compared to the 7800GT with 20) does not sit too well with me.
I dunno.. I suppose it depends on what your upgrade cycle is like, but given that mobos are generally one of the cheaper components of an upgrade, and that you're almost certainly going to be required to run PCI Express in the future, it seems hard to justify buying AGP if you're just in need of a new video card. If you don't need to buy a new CPU, I'd say you're probably better off sucking up the cost of the new mobo at the same time as a PCI-E vid card.. This also gets you into the land of SLI possibilities, which (correct me if I'm wrong), you don't get with an AGP solution..
..if, on the other hand, your CPU
can't be carried over to the new mobo (but is still reasonably capable), then it might make quite a bit of sense to just get the AGP card and hold out on the move to PCI-E for as long as possible. You should be OK until something either won't run on XP (which should be a long time), or specifically requires PCI-E video for some wacky reason (which I can't really see happening outside of maybe DX10?).
Either way, a 7800 card is going to make you happy, although I don't know anything specifically about the performance of the GS.. but I've got a GT and it's freakin'
insane so..

I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me.
